LaHood introduced the VP, saying he was the “most active rider on Amtrak.” The VP then spoke, starting his remarks with a joke: “I promise these comments will be shorter than the commute.” Later, he said: “This is a giant environmental down payment.” Biden said his father once remarked on the 7,900 commutes he logged during his time in Congress that that was the “definition of a misspent adulthood.” Of the announcement by POTUS, Biden said: “This will be one of the many parts of a great legacy he’s going to leave. Others in the audience included state transportation secretaries, elected officials and transportation advocacy groups.
