Carlo Bevilacqua: Indian Stills

London 1st – 10th December (and from 11th to 14th December – 118 Gallery – Notting Hill )  a selection of Indian Stills, the Polaroid b/w work of the photographer Carlo Bevilacqua, will be featured at the joint exhibition of of photographs Indian Visions at  The Nehru Centre of  London.Indian Visions is a dramatic and thought-provoking selection of images by Indian and international photographers curated by Robin Saikia of Gallery 118, who has dedicated the exhibition to his late cousin Ashok Saikia, the distinguished former Joint Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office and himself a keen photographer. Spectacular aerial kite photography by Nicolas Chorier will be shown alongside intimate scenes of working life by Diwan Manna. Vinita Agarwal’s studies of life in Rajasthan complement prizewinning images by Carlo Bevilacqua. Ravi Agarwal shows striking studies of environmental issues alongside beautifully textured Mumbai street scenes by Katarina Baliova. (Indian vision)

Bosnia-Erzegovina: stimoli economia

La Banca europea per gli investimenti (BEI) ha annunciato ieri la firma di tre contratti di prestito, per un totale complessivo di 110 milioni di euro, intesi a stimolare l’economia della Bosnia-Erzegovina e sostenerne l’impegno verso una ripresa.  50 milioni di euro, attraverso Intesa Sanpaolo Banka, dedicati alle piccole e medie imprese (PMI) e ai progetti prioritari. 50 milioni di euro, per il tramite della Banca per lo sviluppo e gli investimenti della Repubblica Serba di Bosnia-Erzegovina (IRBRS), destinati alle PMI e ai progetti infrastrutturali locali. 10 milioni di euro, attraverso LOK Microfinance, per le piccole e microimprese, anche di recente costituzione. Queste tre operazioni contribuiscono in misura rilevante allo sviluppo di progetti nei settori economici non adeguatamente sostenuti dai servizi finanziari e all’offerta di risorse a un ampio ventaglio di piccole e microimprese, con beneficio di una parte importante dell’economia locale.   I primi due contratti sono stati siglati in occasione della visita ufficiale in Bosnia-Erzegovina effettuata da Dario Scannapieco, Vicepresidente della BEI responsabile per le operazioni in Italia, Malta e Balcani occidentali. Il terzo, a favore di una fondazione attiva nel settore della microfinanza, era stato firmato in ottobre. Il Vicepresidente della BEI ha incontrato il Ministro delle finanze e del tesoro della Bosnia-Erzegovina, Dragan Vrankic, e il Ministro delle finanze della Federazione di Bosnia ed Erzegovina, Vjekoslav Bevanda.  Si tratta di un prestito da 50 milioni di euro diretto a finanziare i progetti su piccola e media scala promossi dalle PMI o dalle autorità locali negli ambiti dell’economia della conoscenza, dell’energia e della tutela dell’ambiente in tutto il Paese. Almeno il 70% del finanziamento sarà dedicato ai progetti delle PMI.
La Banca europea per gli investimenti (BEI), l’istituzione dell’Unione europea (UE) per l’erogazione di prestiti a lungo termine, sostiene progetti di investimento validi che promuovono gli obiettivi politici dell’Unione.  Nei Paesi dei Balcani occidentali, le operazioni di finanziamento della Banca contribuiscono ad agevolare il processo di integrazione con l’UE. Tra il 2001 e il 2009 la BEI ha concesso prestiti alla Bosnia-Erzegovina per un totale di 1 023 milioni di euro. L’intervento della Banca nel Paese ha finora riguardato in via prioritaria il finanziamento di progetti delle PMI e nei settori dei trasporti, dell’energia e dell’ambiente.

European churches responding to migration 2010

A meeting of some 70 representatives of churches from across Europe and participants from  other world regions today in Budapest launches the focus year of “European Churches responding to Migration” – a joint initiative of the Conference of European Churches and the  Churches Commission for Migrants in Europe. Tonight s official launch is hosted by the Reformed Church in Hungary and “marks the  beginning of activities by which churches in Europe seek to make visible the churches’ commitment to strangers, responding to the message of the Bible, which insists on the dignity of every human being throughout the year 2010”, the General Secretary of the Conference of  European Churches, the Ven. Colin Williams, stated. “Churches shall be encouraged to  strengthen and enhance their work with and for migrants, refugees and ethnic minority people.”  At the same time, the activities aim at improving the situation of migrants in Europe very  concretely – through joint advocacy for migrants’ and refugees’ right to a long-term residence  status after five years of legal stay, irrespective of the grounds of stay.  The launch is part of a three-day-conference, in which participants exchange how their churches are addressing migration – as an issue related to the unity of the church, the socio-diaconal  calling of the church and the political involvement of the church. Speakers from across Europe will give testimonies of their work. Participants from the World Council of Churches Global Ecumenical Network on Migration will offer their observation on the work in Europe from an external perspective.  Tonight s launch will feature the presentation of a calendar for the year 2010. The calendar highlights specific area of churches work on migration and encourages churches to further  develop and give more visibility to these activities. Suggestions range from organising bible studies between congregations with different ethnic background and joint worship of congregations worshipping in different languages to the setting up psychological support for  refugees and advocacy for irregular migrants. “Migration has become a reality in almost all European countries, be they more immigration,  emigration or transit migration countries,” CCME General Secretary Doris Peschke stated. “It is important to recognise this reality and overcome fears in our societies. Migration is a blessing and not a curse,” she added, as churches have a rich biblical basis to understand migration in a more positive way

Serata in ricordo vittime terremoto Abruzzo

Venerdì 27 novembre l’On. Antonio Razzi deputato dell’IDV eletto nella Circoscrizione Estero – Europa, parteciperà ad una serata di beneficenza in favore delle vittime del terremoto in Abruzzo, presso la Italienische Geellschaft di Hildesheim (Germania). L’iniziativa è stata organizzata dal COMITES di Hannover, dalle Associazioni italiane di Hildesheim, dall’Associazione Ornithologishen e dall’Associazione Cuochi di Pescara. Alle ore 18:00 presso il Comune di Hildesheim sarà proiettato il film “La figlia di Iorio” del regista Mario A. Di Iorio. L’Onorevole Razzi, sempre presente alle iniziative organizzate dalle comunità italiane all’estero, a favore delle zone terremotate abruzzesi, interverrà nel corso dell’iniziativa per ricordare a tutti i partecipanti l’importanza che riveste tale manifestazione quale utile strumento che permette di esaltare e mantenere viva l’italianità all’estero. L’Onorevole concluderà il suo discorso, portando il saluto del Presidente della Camera Gianfranco Fini a tutti i presenti e consegnerà all’organizzatore Enzo Iacovozzi, un ricordo del Parlamento Italiano.

American families reflect the diversity

American families reflect the diversity of this great nation. No two are exactly alike, but there is a common thread they each share. Our families are bound together through times of joy and times of grief. They shape us, support us, instill the values that guide us as individuals, and make possible all that we achieve.  So tomorrow, I’ll be giving thanks for my family — for all the wisdom, support, and love they have brought into my life. But tomorrow is also a day to remember those who cannot sit down to break bread with those they love.  The soldier overseas holding down a lonely post and missing his kids. The sailor who left her home to serve a higher calling. The folks who must spend tomorrow apart from their families to work a second job, so they can keep food on the table or send a child to school.  We are grateful beyond words for the service and hard work of so many Americans who make our country great through their sacrifice. And this year, we know that far too many face a daily struggle that puts the comfort and security we all deserve painfully out of reach. So when we gather tomorrow, let us also use the occasion to renew our commitment to building a more peaceful and prosperous future that every American family can enjoy.  It seems like a lifetime ago that a crowd met on a frigid February morning in Springfield, Illinois to set out on an improbable course to change our nation. In the years since, Michelle and I have been blessed with the support and friendship of the millions of Americans who have come together to form this ongoing movement for change.  You have been there through victories and setbacks. You have given of yourselves beyond measure. You have enabled all that we have accomplished — and you have had the courage to dream yet bigger dreams for what we can still achieve. Parlamento europeo: Giustizia e affari interni

Lotta al razzismo, libera circolazione delle coppie senza discriminazioni fondate sull’orientamento sessuale e difesa delle donne, dei minori e degli immigrati. E’ quanto chiede il Parlamento per lo spazio europeo di giustizia, auspicando più diritti per i detenuti e fondi UE per la costruzione di nuove carceri. Occorre anche tutelare la privacy e combattere la criminalità informatica, garantire una maggiore solidarietà tra i paesi UE per l’accoglienza dei rifugiati e tutelare i cittadini da terrorismo e criminalità.  Il Parlamento ha adottato una risoluzione con la quale indica la sua posizione riguardo al cosiddetto Programma di Stoccolma che stabilisce le priorità europee nel campo della giustizia e degli affari interni per i prossimi cinque anni. I leader dei governi europei affronteranno la questione al Vertice del 10-11 dicembre.  Il Parlamento sottolinea che occorre contrastare il crescente fenomeno dell’intolleranza all’interno dell’UE dando piena attuazione alla decisione quadro sulla lotta contro talune forme ed espressioni di razzismo e xenofobia mediante il diritto penale, ma anche “adottando ulteriori misure legislative a livello europeo per quanto riguarda i reati generati dall’odio”.  I deputati ritengono inoltre necessario un quadro giuridico completo che offra alle vittime di reato – in particolare alle vittime della criminalità organizzata, della tratta di esseri umani e della violenza di genere – “la più ampia protezione”, compreso un risarcimento adeguato.  Il Parlamento chiede norme minime relative alle condizioni delle carceri e dei detenuti e una serie di diritti comuni per i detenuti nell’UE, “incluse norme adeguate in materia di risarcimento dei danni per le persone ingiustamente arrestate o condannate”. Sollecita anche la conclusione di accordi fra l’Unione europea e i paesi terzi sul rimpatrio dei loro cittadini che hanno subito condanne e la piena applicazione del principio del reciproco riconoscimento alle sentenze penali ai fini della loro esecuzione nell’Unione europea.  Il Parlamento invita gli Stati membri “a dimostrare di essere pienamente impegnati a favore dei meccanismi di solidarietà, quali il progetto pilota per la ridistribuzione interna dei beneficiari di protezione internazionale previsto dalla Commissione”. Per i deputati è  “imperativo” che la protezione dei cittadini dal terrorismo e dal crimine organizzato “sia sostenuta mediante strumenti legislativi e operativi efficaci, … e inquadrata in una legislazione chiara che offra ai cittadini UE la piena tutela dei propri diritti, incluso il diritto di contestare norme sproporzionate o ambigue e l’applicazione impropria delle norme”.  Il Parlamento sottolinea la necessità di limiti “più chiari e rigorosi” in materia di scambio di informazioni tra Stati membri e di uso di registri comuni dell’Unione europea.

Give children with HIV a chance

Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, President of Caritas Internationalis, has called for immediate action to prevent the deaths of children with HIV in poor countries.  Speaking about the theme of World AIDS Day, 1 December “Universal access and human rights”, the Caritas Internationalis President said that it is a basic human right that children with HIV are allowed to grow up and become adults.  Cardinal Rodríguez said, “On World Aids Day 2009, we turn our thoughts to the theme of “Universal access and human rights”. It’s a basic human right that children grow up to become adults and yet half of children with HIV die before their second birthday because they live in poor countries where access to adequate care is limited.  “Caritas works in communities across the world where HIV is devastating families. Through our “Haart for Children” campaign we are urging governments, pharmaceutical companies and the global community to ensure children have early access to HIV and TB testing and treatment. In 2009, Caritas Internationalis launched the “Haart for children” campaign to urge governments, pharmaceutical firms and the global community to provide better testing and treatment for children with HIV and TB. Caritas is also campaigning to improve efforts to prevent HIV from being passed on from mothers to their children. Caritas runs HIV and AIDS programmes in over a hundred countries and has been engaged in tackling the pandemic for over 20 years.

Forum Internazionale Art a Siviglia

Siviglia dal 25 al 27 novembre si tiene a Siviglia il Forum internazionale ART per presentare i risultati delle sue attività, illustrare gli strumenti di pianificazione, gestione e organizzazione che li hanno resi possibili.  Sono 33 i paesi coinvolti e 100 i milioni di Euro di risorse complessivamente mobilitate, ai quali si aggiungono conoscenze ed esperienze delle comunità locali. Gli “attori” italiani coinvolti nei progetti ART sono oltre 400 tra regioni, enti locali, associazioni, Organizzazioni non governative e università. I governi italiani hanno investito nell’iniziativa circa 10 milioni di Euro, soprattutto in Libano, Algeria e Bolivia. Come sottolinea l’italiano Giovanni Camilleri (UNDP), coordinatore internazionale di ART, il Forum di Siviglia “rappresenta un giro di boa, per passare definitivamente da una cooperazione basata sul rapporto donante-beneficiario, a una cooperazione basata sulla partnership e sull’azione di soci comuni”. “Se il 2009 è stato l’anno del consolidamento dell’Iniziativa ART, il 2010 e il 2011 saranno gli anni del mainstreaming, cioè dell’inserimento delle modalità di azione di ART all’interno delle politiche dell’Onu”, aggiunge. Promuovendo un sistema globale di cooperazione che collega tra loro attori locali, regionali, nazionali e internazionali, l’Iniziativa ART favorisce il dialogo e la solidarietà per uno sviluppo più sostenibile, partecipato, equo e pacifico, verso quello che è stato definito un nuovo “multilateralismo attivo”.

Phil Collins: Soy mi madre

London until 18/12/2009 16 Wharf Road – N1 7RW Victoria Miro GalleryVictoria Miro Gallery hosts the European premiere of soy mi madre, the latest film by Phil Collins, in his second solo exhibition with the gallery.In soy mi madre, Collins expands on these themes by using the format of the telenovela. Commissioned in 2008 by the Aspen Art Museum as part of the Jane and Marc Nathanson Dintiguished Artist in Residency Program, in this work Collins focuses on the Latino and immigrant populations of Colorado, a sizable percentage of which hail from northwestern Mexico. In Aspen itself, this community figures mainly as a non-resident low-qualified work force, dispersed through a ring of satellite towns from which it commutes daily. At the same time alluding to and refuting the preconceived glamorous image of Aspen, Collins made a work in resonance with the cultural context of this specific population. Phil Collins: soy mi madre will be published by the Aspen Art Museum later this year. Including contributions by Carlos Monsiváis, Mexico’s leading cultural analyst, Magali Arriola, writer and curator, and an in-depth interview with the artist by Aspen Art Museum director Heidi Zuckerman-Jacobson. soy mi madre was first exhibited at the Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, Colorado in 2008 and earlier this year at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, New York. soy mi madre will feature in The Reach of Realism at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, 1 December 2009 – 14 February 2010, and will also be presented on local TV network in Aspen and in Collins’ solo exhibition at DAAD Galerie in Berlin in February 2010. participated in group exhibitions including The Making of Art, Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2009), Acting Out: Social Experiments in Video, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2009), Life on Mars, the 55th Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (2008), and The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality and Moving Image, Part II: Realisms, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC, (2008). Ban Ki-Moon on Children’s Convention’s

Secretary-General, Twentieth Anniversary,  Says Treaty ‘Our Beacon, Our Template’, Its Influence ProfoundFollowing is the text of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s remarks on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, today, 20 November, in New York: “The Convention on the Rights of the Child recognized for the first time that children have human rights, and that they need special protection that adults do not.   Over the past 20 years, the Convention has been our beacon, our template, our guide in protecting and nurturing the youngest and most vulnerable members of society.   Its influence has been profound.  It has become history’s most widely accepted international human rights treaty.   One hundred and ninety-three States have ratified it.  We look forward to the day when all United Nations members give it their full backing.  The Convention has had a huge impact on the agenda for human rights and development.  It has inspired new approaches and advances in child survival and education and it But realizing the rights in the Convention remains a huge challenge. Millions of children still die before their fifth birthday from largely preventable causes.  Millions more lack access to clean food, water and education, and are victims of violence and exploitation. Children are physically and emotionally vulnerable.  They are often the first to succumb to disease and malnutrition.  They can be scarred for life by mental or emotional abuse. That is why children should always have the first claim on our attention and resources.  But this is especially true now, at a time when multiple crises threaten the poorest people, particularly in developing countries. Children must be at the heart of our thinking on climate change, on the food crisis, and on the other challenges we are addressing on a daily basis.
