Danny Danon, deputy speaker of the Knesset, is a rapidly rising political star in Israel and abroad; he has just released a book and is available for interview from Israel, or he will be in New York City from September 11th – 13th (directly following the DNC and ahead of the UN Generally Assembly). As a leader of Netanyahu’s ruling Likud Party, Danon is a fearless supporter of a new brand of Israeli nationalism that often puts him at the center of fierce political debate. His efforts to prioritize Israel’s own viability with or without the support of its allies are sparking heated debates. Danon is available to go on air to discuss a range of issues, including the upcoming American presidential elections and why Israel should be prepared to stand on its own.In his book, ISRAEL: The Will to Prevail (Palgrave Macmillan; 2012), he delivers his hard-hitting assessment of the nation’s present moment, and the bold stance that he argues his fellow leaders must take in order to assure a permanent and secure Israel. Danon makes an unflinching case for an autonomous Israel that acts on its own terms, despite world or U.S. opinion. His book calls for a new way of dealing with the Palestinian conflict that eschews the familiar two-state proposal and allows Israelis to take their fate into their own hands. Danon discusses his views on:
• How the Obama administration ushered in a thawing of U.S./Israel relations, and why this puts both countries in peril
• Why Israel and the U.S. must continue to ally themselves, with the acceptance that the political needs of both don’t always align
• Why talk about the creation of a Palestinian state should cease
• Danon’s argument that Israel should annex the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, with the goal of extending Israeli jurisdiction to the Jewish communities and uninhabited lands of the West Bank
• A three-state solution entailing an agreement between Jordan, Egypt and Israel, giving Palestinians land and rights across these three areas.
• Why Israel’s PR war with the Palestinians is so crucial, and how the nation’s message and reputation can be protected against inaccurate news reports

3,000 Volunteers Needed for HOPE
Pubblicato da fidest su domenica, 8 gennaio 2012
On Monday, January 30, 2012, approximately 3,000 volunteers will fan out across the five boroughs for the eighth annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE). Conducting the survey throughout the early morning hours, participants will become the eyes and ears of the City– canvassing streets, parks and other public spaces to identify individuals living unsheltered. “Through HOPE, we can effectively project service needs and allocate resources for individuals who are experiencing street homelessness,” said Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Commissioner Seth Diamond. “In addition, the survey always proves to be a valuable opportunity for New Yorkers to get involved, while learning about the issue of homelessness and the work that DHS does 365 days a year.” Required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), street surveys similar to HOPE are conducted in municipalities across the country and are a requisite for receiving funding under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. With 1,500 survey areas covered, and the independent addition of decoys as a quality control measure, New York City’s HOPE count embodies the Bloomberg Administration’s innovative yet data-backed approach to government.
The 2011 HOPE survey estimated a total of 2,648 individuals living unsheltered throughout the City– equating to a 40 percent decrease since the first Citywide survey in 2005. The 2012 count will further indicate where resources are needed in a transparent and research-driven way, with the agency’s top priority to best serve homeless clients.
Working with non-profit providers, DHS employs a comprehensive, year-round outreach program, through which teams engage the street homeless population 24 hours per day, seven days a week, Citywide, bringing services directly to those in need. Through the creation of alternatives to traditional shelter, such as Safe Havens and stabilization beds, many individuals who had previously resided on the streets for years have recently accepted housing options and moved indoors. “With dangerous winter weather quickly approaching, we ask every New Yorker to dial 311 if they see a street homeless individual who may be in need of assistance,” said Commissioner Diamond. “The participation of ordinary New Yorkers is vital to our street outreach program, and continues to make a difference in the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness.” (commissioner)

Brooklyn CB6 Annual Holiday Party
Pubblicato da fidest su domenica, 11 dicembre 2011
Here’s a chance to come together as a community, to share some food and frivolity in a casual, social environment. That’s right – no minutes to take, Robert’s Rules of Order are suspended, and the only thing on the agenda is having fun! This year’s event will be held on Monday, December 19th from 6-9pm, at Red Rose Restaurant, 315 Smith Street (between Union/President Streets), in Carroll Gardens. It’s only $30 per person for savory, delicious snacks and soda. There’s also a cash bar. We keep the price down to make this an affordable night out for everyone. And if we do clear anything above our cost, that money is used to help support our 501(c)3 organization, Friends of Brooklyn Community Board 6, Inc. It’s our Friends group that pays for this monthly newsletter, and supplements our community board’s meager operating budget. In order to keep us going another year, we would be grateful if you would consider making a year-end contribution on top of the party cost. Feel free to round-up to $50, or $100, or whatever fits your budget, and bring your check made out to “Friends of Brooklyn CB6, Inc.” to the party with you, or mail it to us at 250 Baltic Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201. As a non-profit organization, your year-end contribution is tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. We hope to see you at the party, because it wouldn’t be a party without YOU. Feel free to bring family, friends and neighbors too.

New York: l’Italia in festa
