WWF Rallies the World to Celebrate Poverty

Pubblicato da fidest su martedì, 10 aprile 2012

“The global scale of Earth Hour,” according to WWF President and CEO Carter Roberts, “is inspiring and captures our imaginations.” Quite—but only if you want to imagine living in Pyongyang. It’s certainly not the first time we’ve highlighted (no pun intended) how Earth Hour is nothing more than a celebration for anti-free enterprise environmentalists in self-righteousness and moral posturing, and it’s certainly not going to be the last. But that obviously didn’t stop WWF. Despite their best efforts to monopol ize morality, WWF’s Earth Hour actually does nothing to reduce overall carbon emissions. Thus despite being marketed as a noble endeavor to heel the environment, it’s actually nothing more than a global anti-development exercise. But it was curious that Earth Hour would also coincide with a New York Times piece about how North Korea is becoming “more open to gingerly discussing its environmental problems in recent years in the hope of finding solutions.” How could it be that a country as poor as North Korea faces so many environmental problems? It’s because free markets, not cheap publicity stunts, breed clean technology and innovation, allowing people across the world to live in a more healthy and prosperous environment. In fact, thanks to the power of markets and trade, some 500 million people escaped poverty between 2005 and 2010. And yes, they escaped poverty by using fossil fuels. But what’s the alternative? WWF’s black outs give you a hint (by Consumers Alliance for Global Prosperity)
The Consumers Alliance for Global Prosperity educates, empowers and mobilizes people to stand up against Green injustice. As an action-oriented alliance of advocacy groups that promotes economic growth and pro-consumer policies around the world, the Consumers Alliance works to counter the costly collaboration between environmentalists, the corporate sector, trade unions and others.

New York pressed outrage at the conviction of Italian journalist and politician Giuseppe (“Peppino”) Caldarola who had written an article criticizing a cartoon entitled ‘Fiamma Frankenstein’ that depicts fellow parliamentarian Fiamma Nirenstein, who is Jewish, with a hooked nose, the symbol of fascist Italy and the Star of David. Vauro, the author of the caricature which was published by the newspaper Il Manifesto, was acquitted by the same court of charges of anti-Semitism. Lauder called the ruling “a travesty and an insult.” “While the man who defends a Jewish woman is fined, the author of this blatantly anti-Semitic cartoon is acquitted and gets a free ride from the court to continue injecting venom into the political debate in Italy,” the WJC president declared in reaction. ”Nirenstein is an excellent lawmaker who does not shy away from doing political battle. Although one is entitled to disagree with her views, nobody is entitled to hold against her the fact that she is Jewish and dedicated to the wellbeing of Israel. Anti-Semitic or racist caricatures have nothing to do with satire, far from it; they are simply despicable.” Lauder called it “very worrying” that the judge had upheld the right to insult a Jew through by using age-old anti-Semitic imagery but denied the right of a journalist to accuse the cartoonist of being an anti-Semite.

World Food Programme unloads humanitarian aid ...

Image via Wikipedia

It is with great pleasure that I announce today a life-saving partnership, signed between the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Luxembourg that will provide humanitarian food assistance for millions of people around the world and support emergency humanitarian telecommunications systems that will be deployed when sudden crises strike. This partnership is launched at a critical time in the world — economic and weather shocks continue to challenge the food security of nearly 1 billion people on earth. Luxembourg’s support for humanitarian assistance and international cooperation is second-to-none. It is WFP’s largest per-capita donor, contributing more than EURO 15 per every one of its citizens. Luxembourg’s commitment to sign multi-year partnership agreements with WFP allow for forward planning and flexibility that ensures the most effective deployment of hunger tools.
Today, with the signing of a Strategic Partnership Agreement that will run from 2012 to 2015, this commitment has been further proven. Under the partnership Luxembourg will provide €30.8 million to support emergency response and programmes such as school meals, nutrition activities in West Africa, nutritional support to HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis activities and emergency preparedness.
In addition, Luxembourg has provided an invaluable in-kind donation: developing an innovative platform to support telecommunications in emergencies. The new project, called “emergency.lu” will help WFP, as head of the humanitarian community’s Emergency Telecommunications Cluster, set up life-saving voice and data communications to enable humanitarian workers to save lives during quick-onset disasters such as earthquakes and floods as well as other operations around the world.
Luxembourg developed “emergency.lu” together with WFP and will provide expert staff and the equipment – such as portable satellite terminals, servers and software – and will transport these systems anywhere in the world when an emergency strikes. It’s an initiative that will literally save lives.
WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries.

Choises & Challenges in a Networked World

Pubblicato da fidest su giovedì, 17 febbraio 2011

A few minutes after midnight on January 28th, the internet went dark across Egypt. During the previous four days, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians had marched to demand a new government. And the world, on TVs, laptops, cell phones, and smart phones, had followed every single step. Pictures and videos from Egypt flooded the web. On Facebook and Twitter, journalists posted on-the-spot reports. Protestors coordinated their next moves. And citizens of all stripes shared their hopes and fears about this pivotal moment in the history of their country. Millions worldwide answered in real time, “You are not alone and we are with you.” Then the government pulled the plug. Cell phone service was cut off, TV satellite signals were jammed, and internet access was blocked for nearly the entire population. The events in Egypt recalled another protest movement 18 months earlier in Iran, when thousands marched after disputed elections. Their protestors also used websites to organize. The Iranian authorities used technology as well. The Revolutionary Guard stalked members of the Green Movement by tracking their online profiles. And like Egypt, for a time, the government shut down the internet and mobile networks altogether.
The internet has become the public space of the 21st century – the world’s town square, classroom, marketplace, coffeehouse, and nightclub. We all shape and are shaped by what happens there, all 2 billion of us and counting. And that presents a challenge. To maintain an internet that delivers the greatest possible benefits to the world, we need to have a serious conversation about the principles that will guide us, what rules exist and should not exist and why, what behaviors should be encouraged or discouraged and how.
At the same time, the internet continues to be restrained in a myriad of ways. In China, the government censors content and redirects search requests to error pages. In Burma, independent news sites have been taken down with distributed denial of service attacks. In Cuba, the government is trying to create a national intranet, while not allowing their citizens to access the global internet. In Vietnam, bloggers who criticize the government are arrested and abused. In Iran, the authorities block opposition and media websites, target social media, and steal identifying information about their own people in order to hunt them down. The second challenge is protecting both transparency and confidentiality. The internet’s strong culture of transparency derives from its power to make information of all kinds available instantly. But in addition to being a public space, the internet is also a channel for private communications. And for that to continue, there must be protection for confidential communication online.
The multitude of opinions and ideas that crowd the internet is both a result of its openness and a reflection of our human diversity. Online, everyone has a voice. And the Universal Declaration of Human Rights protects the freedom of expression for all. But what we say has consequences. Hateful or defamatory words can inflame hostilities, deepen divisions, and provoke violence. On the internet, this power is heightened. Intolerant speech is often amplified and impossible to retract. Of course, the internet also provides a unique space for people to bridge their differences and build trust and understanding.
There are political costs as well. Consider Tunisia, where online economic activity was an important part of the country’s ties with Europe while online censorship was on par with China and Iran, the effort to divide the economic internet from the “everything else” internet in Tunisia could not be sustained. People, especially young people, found ways to use connection technologies to organize and share grievances, which, as we know, helped fuel a movement that led to revolutionary change. In Syria, too, the government is trying to negotiate a non-negotiable contradiction. Just last week, it lifted a ban on Facebook and YouTube for the first time in three years, and yesterday they convicted a teenage girl of espionage and sentenced her to five years in prison for the political opinions she expressed on her blog.
In the last three years, we have awarded more than $20 million in competitive grants through an open process, including interagency evaluation by technical and policy experts to support a burgeoning group of technologists and activists working at the cutting edge of the fight against internet repression. This year, we will award more than $25 million in additional funding. We are taking a venture capital-style approach, supporting a portfolio of technologies, tools, and training, and adapting as more users shift to mobile devices. We have our ear to the ground, talking to digital activists about where they need help, and our diversified approach means we’re able to adapt the range of threats that they face. We support multiple tools, so if repressive governments figure out how to target one, others are available. And we invest in the cutting edge because we know that repressive governments are constantly innovating their methods of oppression and we intend to stay ahead of them.
Internet freedom is about defending the space in which all these things occur so that it remains not just for the students here today, but your successors and all who come after you. This is one of the grand challenges of our time. We are engaged in a vigorous effort against those who we have always stood against, who wish to stifle and repress, to come forward with their version of reality and to accept none other. We enlist your help on behalf of this struggle. It’s a struggle for human rights, it’s a struggle for human freedom, and it’s a struggle for human dignity. (abstract Remarks Hillary Rodham Clinton Secretary of State)

World Food Programme’s

Pubblicato da fidest su mercoledì, 1 dicembre 2010

Maputo – Mozambique was hailed for its pioneering role in supporting the UN World Food Programme’s innovative Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative that helps connect small scale farmers to markets as well as improving the quality and supply of their products.  “Mozambique was the birthplace of our P4P programme and it is leading the way in demonstrating how WFP’s investment and support for farmers can become an engine for sustainable agricultural development,” said WFP Executive Director, Josette Sheeran, who is in Mozambique to visit WFP food assistance programmes and to attend WFP’s global gathering of P4P stakeholders.  Today WFP purchases 80 percent of the food it buys from developing countries, and in the past 3 years WFP has purchased nearly 1 billion metric tons of food from African farmers to support its food assistance programmes.  P4P is a specially designed programme to include marginalised small farmers in WFPs food supply chain.  Since its inception in September 2008, P4P programmes have been launched in 20 countries around the world.  Through P4P, WFP has purchased more than 120,000 metric tons of food from small scale farmers across the world at a value of US$40 million – enough to feed more than one and a half million people for 6 months.  Farmers participating in the P4P programmes receive training from WFP and its partners in improved agricultural production, post-harvest handling of crops, marketing, agricultural financing, and how to contract with WFP.  This year alone, the successful P4P initiative in Mozambique led to the purchase of 5,350 metric tons of maize and pulses from smallholder farmers – enough to feed more than 100,000 people for 3 months.
The P4P conference – which opened in Maputo on Monday – brings together key P4P partners, including government representatives, NGOs, and small-scale farmers who are participating in P4P programmes.  WFP’s P4P programmes are supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Howard G. Buffet Foundation, the European Commission, and the governments of Belgium, Canada, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, USA, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

World Food Day 2010

To build a better world for humanity by 2015

Pubblicato da fidest su venerdì, 3 settembre 2010

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are a series of targets agreed by the 189 UN member States in 2000 to build a better world for humanity by 2015. While progress has been made in improving lives, millions still live in unacceptable poverty, facing hunger, lack of rights, and disease.  World leaders will meet at the UN Headquarters in New York for the High-Level Meeting ‘MDG2010 Summit’ to assess progress and recommit to their pledges. Our members and partners are engaging in the meeting.  Caritas Internationalis Secretary General Lesley-Anne Knight said, “Right now over one billion people are suffering from hunger and malnutrition because they are so poor. Our promises to lift them out of poverty will fall short on current projections.  Global partnerships for justice need decisive investments now. In achieving the MDGs, Caritas says more than just 5 rich countries need to meet the long-promised target of giving 0.7 percent of national income in development aid. Aid needs to double to $100 billion a year – and be more efficient, effective and fair.  Aid must not be tied so as to benefit the giver. Recipients must be allowed to choose and plan themselves what is best to do in their countries. More debts need to be cancelled. A poor country cannot spend money on health and education if it all goes to servicing national debt. Caritas will be following the MDG2010 Summit through its office in New York, where its Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Joseph Donnelly is a member of the General Assembly President’s MDG2010 Summit Task Force.

On conclusion of Bonn climate talks

Pubblicato da fidest su sabato, 7 agosto 2010

Bonn As the Russian wildfires spread to 20 regions, now threatening nuclear sites  – and Pakistan is underwater, the climate negotiations in Bonn are limping to a close with no sign of any climate deal in sight, Greenpeace said today. “The climate negotiators here seem oblivious to what is going on around them: Russia is on fire and Pakistan is drowning – yet they seem happy to continue as if they have all the time in the world,” said Wendel Trio, Greenpeace International Climate Policy Director, from Bonn. Among the worst offenders this week have been the US, Australia and Japan (with Canada’s quiet support) making increasingly radical demands from developing countries, whilst doing virtually nothing at home. But many other countries have also shown unwillingness to seek agreement. With only one week of negotiations left before Cancun, the only thing moving upwards is the number of square brackets in the text.  While negotiations have begun, the divergence is bigger than ever – but largely for the same reason: countries are looking to each other to take the first step. We need industrialized countries to make this step and show real commitments to deep emissions cuts and serious financial support. Greenpeace noted that the negotiators in Bonn clearly needed a stronger mandate from their superiors at home. What we need to see is a reflection of the urgency of the issue from countries to ensure that the last week of climate talks – before Cancun, (taking place in China in early October). This will allow them to get agreement in Cancun on some of the building blocks needed to conclude a strong deal for the climate next year.

World Economic Forum

Pubblicato da fidest su domenica, 31 gennaio 2010

Davos (Svizzera).
