Madrid, Spain Thursday 28 May at 11 a.m. Calle Alcalá, 62, Casa Árabe press conference new report examining discrimination against Muslims in the EU. The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) will release a report on discrimination against Muslims in the EU, ahead of the international conference “Debating Islamophobia” in Madrid, Spain. Given the shortage of extensive, objective and comparable data on Muslims in the European Union, the FRA’s survey provides data on how Muslims throughout the EU experience discrimination and racist crime in everyday life.Speakers: Ioannis Dimitrakopoulos, Head of Equality and Citizen’s Rights Department, European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights Gema Martín Muñoz, Director General of Casa Árabe (languages: English and Spanish) The findings of this report “Data in Focus 2 – Muslims” are part of the first ever EU-wide survey on immigrant and ethnic minority groups’ experiences of discrimination and racist crime (EU-MIDIS – Minorities and Discrimination Survey). The results for Muslim respondents indicate relatively high levels of discrimination and victimisation, depending on their ethnicity and country of residence. At the same time, many racist incidents are not reported to the police or to any other organisation. Is there a passive acceptance of discrimination and racism? Does discrimination affect social integration and community cohesion?
