Climate change: “We have to act”

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 18 luglio 2009

Mr John Taroanui Doom, an observer from the World Council of Churches (Maòhi Protestant Church, French Polynesia) to the 13th Assembly of the Conference of European Churches spoke of the urgency of the situation facing his region with regards to climate change. Melting ice caps are causing the sea levels to rise, which is flooding Pacific islands in countries such as Kiribati and Tuvalu. He said that churches must take action in the face of climate change.  Rev. Dr Peter Pavlovic agreed, saying: “We have to act, not only as individuals but also as communities.”  Dr Pavlovic is the Secretary of the European Christian Environmental Network  Delegates debated scientific and theological issues relating to the environment during an Assembly hearing on the issue of “Churches and Climate Change”. Churches in Europe are now preparing for the Copenhagen Summit in December 2009, where world leaders will agree new targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Assembly hearings are an opportunity for delegates to confer on important issues.  Views expressed in hearings are personal, and do not necessarily represent the official view of CEC.
