Death of Serbian Patriarch Pavle

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 18 novembre 2009

The General Secretary of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) has sent a message of condolences to the Serbian Orthodox Church on the occasion of the death of its Patriarch, Pavle, who passed away yesterday at the age of 95. “It was with profound sadness that I learnt yesterday of the death of Patriarch Pavle”, said the General Secretary of CEC. “Patriarch Pavle had served the Serbian Orthodox Church as Patriarch for a considerable number of years. During those years, his humble, modest demeanour had endeared him to all the faithful, who have been so constant in upholding him in prayer during these years of illness. His prayerful leadership of the Church was deeply appreciated”. “Patriarch Pavle”, Williams added, “lived out among us the call of St. Paul that we should ‘in humility regard others as better than yourselves’ (Philippians 2,3) so following with great faithfulness the example given us by Our Lord Jesus Christ. Not least for this reason, Patriarch Pavle’s passing from us will be deeply felt. At CEC, we are conscious too that Patriarch Pavle was called by God to lead the Serbian Orthodox Church through times of great political change and uncertainty. In a period of conflict and violence, he was humble but determined in his call for peace and reconciliation, a witness which was widely valued by the people of Serbia”.
The Conference of European Churches (CEC) is a fellowship of some 120 Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Old Catholic Churches from all countries of Europe, plus 40 associated organisations. CEC was founded in 1959. It has offices in Geneva, Brussels and Strasbourg.
