Freedom by the people of Libya

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 23 agosto 2011

The quest for freedom by the people of Libya is coming to a historic moment. The relentless efforts of the forces of the new Libya, supported militarily by NATO and several EU Member States, and countries from the region are bringing the Gaddafi regime to its end. We urge Colonel Gaddafi to accept the will of the people, step down immediately, and avoid further bloodshed and sufferance.
The way is now open for Libya for freedom and self-determination. The European Union will keep supporting the country in its democratic transition and economic reconstruction, based on social justice, inclusiveness and territorial integrity, together with the international community. The developments in Libya are giving fresh momentum to the Arab Spring. The quest of the people in the region for freedom and dignity will continue. The European Union stands by them and supports their democratic aspirations and choices.
The EU as a whole has contributed over €150 million in humanitarian assistance to the Libyan crisis, with €80 million coming from the Commission itself. Commission-funded humanitarian assistance has supported: the people fleeing Libya; the repatriation from neighbouring countries to their country of origin of over 31,700 third-country nationals who had been working in Libya; assistance to refugees who cannot go back to their home country and Libyans fleeing Libya; evacuating by sea and air an estimated 5,800 Europeans, for which a contribution of €10,574,084 was requested by eight participating states; and financing and pre-positioning of emergency stocks to provide relief aid in Libya. In this context, numerous Commissioners visited Libya and its border regions in March, including Štefan Füle (Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy), Cecilia Malmström (Home Affairs) and Kristalina Georgieva (Humanitarian Aid).
