As world leaders prepare for next month’s G20 Summit in France, the CIGI ’11 conference will look deeper into multilateral processes with sessions on the global economy and other sectors of governance. Former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo and former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin will open the conference with a public conversation, moderated by Thomson Reuters Digital Editor Chrystia Freeland, on Friday, October 28. The former leaders will discuss how to secure the future success of the G20 and, more generally, a blueprint for filling the gaps in global governance. This event will also be live webcast to a global audience. The public event will be followed by an invitation-only weekend conference, October 29-30. International participants will address questions around the global agenda in the following thematic areas: Global Economy, Energy and Environment, Global Development and Global Security.www.cigionline.org/cigi11.
Chrystia Freeland (moderator) was appointed editor of Thomson Reuters Digital in April 2011. Previously, she served as the US managing editor of the Financial Times, and, from 1999 to 2001, was deputy editor of The Globe and Mail.
Paul Martin served as Prime Minister of Canada from 2003 to 2006, and Minister of Finance from 1993 to 2002. In 1999, he became the inaugural chair of the Finance Ministers’ G20, an international group of finance ministers and central bankers from the G7 and emerging market nations. As prime minister he pushed strongly for its elevation to the leaders’ level, which subsequently occurred in 2008.
Ernesto Zedillo served as President of Mexico from 1994-2000, and is the Director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. Boise, Idaho and Seoul, Korea, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:MU), — world leaders in memory technology — today announced the creation of a consortium for OEMs, enablers and integrators that will collaborate in developing and implementing an open interface specification for an innovative new memory technology called the Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC). Micron and Samsung are the founding members of the Hybrid Memory Cube Consortium (HMCC), and will work closely with fellow developers Altera Corporation, Open Silicon, Inc., and Xilinx, Inc. to collectively accelerate industry efforts in bringing to market a broad set of technologies. The consortium will initially define a specification to enable applications ranging from large-scale networking to industrial products and high-performance computing. One of the primary challenges facing the industry — and a key motivation for forming the HMCC — is that the memory bandwidth required by high-performance computers and next-generation networking equipment has increased beyond what conventional memory architectures can provide. The term “memory wall” has been used to describe the problem. Breaking through the memory wall requires a new architecture that can provide increased density and bandwidth at significantly reduced power consumption.
HMC capabilities are a leap beyond current and near-term memory architectures in the areas of performance, packaging and design efficiencies. By defining an industry interface specification for developers, manufacturers and architects, the consortium is committed to making HMC a successful new high-performance memory technology.
The HMCC’s memory specifications will be co-developed among the consortium members. The consortium is open to an unlimited number of adopters, with the opportunity to receive early access to draft specifications and participate in specification discussions and development. Additional information, technical specifications, tools and support for adopting the technology can be found atwww.hybridmemorycube.org.
HMCC Founded by leading members of the world’s semiconductor community, the Hybrid Memory Cube Consortium (HMCC) is dedicated to the development of an industry interface specification for the Hybrid Memory Cube technology. Members of the consortium presently include Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics, Altera Corporation, Open Silicon, Inc., and Xilinx, Inc., with additional companies in discussion to join. To learn more about the HMCC, visit http://www.hybridmemorycube.org.

October 17-31: The Council will organize a series of U.S. Corn education/promotion seminars and one-on-one trade and technical servicing meetings in Indonesia and Malaysia. Program participants include national feed companies, trading groups and livestock integrator companies. This event is intended to assist buyers of U.S. corn with proper contracting and grain procurement. The U.S. Grains Council does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation or marital/family status. Persons with disabilities, who require alternative means for communication of program information should contact the U.S. Grains Council.
The Southeast Asia U.S. Agricultural Cooperators Conference in Indonesia attracted “the elite of the elite buyers of Southeast Asia,” according to Frank Kralicek of the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council. Kralicek, who delivered the U.S. and world corn supply and demand presentation, reported a record turnout of more than 180 people representing major feed milling, integrated feed-meat-food producing and trading companies from the region. He praised Adel Yusupov, USGC regional director, for the quality of the program and the turnout. “I got a lot of questions even before speaking,” Kralicek reported. “Not just about quality and supply, but even about farm programs, the markets, and whether we have the transportation facilities to supply enough corn to Southeast Asia. They asked questions the whole time I was there.” Trades negotiated at the conference increased from $368,939,351 worth of commodities in 2010 to $461,901,280. Wheat sales dropped from 2010 and soybean sales declined slightly, but corn, distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and soybean meal sales registered major gains.
“This conference continues to receive tremendous support from the industry. We hope with each passing year to continue providing this platform to help the region’s agricultural industry progress,” Yusupov concluded.

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 7 ottobre 2011

I wanted to make sure you heard about this: At the most recent Republican debate, the audience booed a gay servicemember who asked the candidates if they would try to undo the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” And during the debate not a single one of the Republican candidates stepped up to support him, or even so much as thanked him for his service — even though he is fighting for our country every single day. No member of our armed forces should face that kind of disrespect. So when President Obama spoke at the Human Rights Campaign’s annual dinner this past weekend, he called out the Republican candidates for failing to stand up for all of our men and women in uniform. We should be proud of the work we all did to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” pass hate crimes legislation, extend benefits to the same-sex partners of federal employees, and more. And the organizing work we’re doing now for 2012 will help us protect what we’ve won and keep moving our nation forward towards equality. As the President put it, “every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of our society. It’s a pretty simple proposition.” During his speech, he spoke of his commitment to repealing the Defense of Marriage Act, passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and making our schools safe for every student — just a few examples of the progress he’s been working for since before the 2008 campaign. He also said we have to keep working to ensure our families and our country as a whole prosper — creating jobs, bringing economic security to the middle class, and ensuring everyone has access to an affordable education affect LGBT Americans just as much as everyone else and are our fights, too. This movement we’re building can break through the gridlock and inaction. We’ve already proved that.

Toronto.Solidia Technologies today unveiled its breakthrough technology platform that enables production of next generation building and construction materials with outstanding physical properties, lower life-cycle cost and lowest environmental footprint at the GreenBuild show in Toronto, Canada. Solidia Technologies bases this innovation in Low Temperature Solidification, with which the morphology and chemistry can be controlled to engineer materials with unique properties and exceptional application performance. The technology also uses CO2 as a reactant, thus sequestering this greenhouse gas during the production process and creating a new pathway to carbon negative building and construction materials. Products manufactured with the Solidia Technologies process are Portland cement-free, have resin-free bonding and can be used in both indoor and outdoor applications. In the building materials industry, this enables the production of stronger and more durable products ranging from facades to floor-tiles and roof-tiles to decorative countertops. In addition, because of the low temperatures at which the materials are manufactured, sensors and other electronic components can be embedded, thus opening the door to a world of building products with novel uses and several value-added features.
The company has agreed to partner with SIMEC, an international equipment manufacturer, to develop scalable production lines that will be deployed in conjunction with strategic partners at a global scale.
With the rapid pace of urbanization around the world, the huge volume of materials required for building and construction, rising energy prices, water scarcity and increasing attention to climate change, the building and construction industries are facing mounting pressure to change and innovate, to create materials with superior properties and to reduce their environmental impact. Solidia Technologies is uniquely positioned to enable this change. The company has raised $29 million to date from KPCB and Bright Capital, the venture arm of the RU-COM group in Russia.

G20 Leaders Summit on Financial Markets and th...

Image via Wikipedia

Ottawa, October. The Private Sector Task Force of Regulated Professions and Industries (PSTF) has released its final report to G-20 Deputies. The PSTF was established in May 2011 at the request of the Presidency of the G-20 to provide an analysis of gaps in regulatory convergence and to make recommendations on how to close such gaps across a number of professions and industries that operate within the financial sector. In addition to the International Actuarial Association (IAA), the membership of the Task Force includes: International Federation of Accountants (IFAC, that also provided logistical and administrative support for the task force), CFA Institute (CFAI); INSOL International; Institute of International Finance (IIF); International Accounting Standards Board (IASB); International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN); International Insurance Society (IIS); and International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC). IAA President Cecil Bykerk stated, “We hope that the G-20 Deputies will find this report clear in setting out practical steps that the G-20 should take to promote regulatory convergence in the financial sector.” PSTF Report recommendations call for the G-20 to maintain its momentum and ambition for global regulatory reform and convergence and to discourage unilateral national regulatory reforms that are inconsistent with international standards. The PSTF recommends the G-20 to encourage and support the development, adoption, implementation and consistent interpretation of globally accepted high-quality international standards, to the greatest extent possible, for each of financial reporting, auditing, valuation, and actuarial services. Additionally, the report stresses the necessity of open communication and transparent processes as well as continued cooperation and enhanced consultation between regulators and professional and industry groups in developing and implementing effective regulatory reforms. IAA Past President Paul Thornton said, “The IAA particularly supports the recommendations to encourage convergence of financial reporting, auditing, valuation and actuarial standards, and the encouragement for implementation of the IAIS Insurance Core Principles and Common Framework for the Supervision of Internationally Active Insurance Groups.” The International Actuarial Association (IAA) is the worldwide association of professional actuarial associations, with a number of special interest sections for individual actuaries. The IAA exists to encourage the development of a global profession, acknowledged as technically competent and professionally reliable, which will ensure that the public interest is served.
