Near the High Line’s southern terminus, crews are hard at work preparing to pour the foundation for the new downtown location of the Whitney Museum of American Art, which will open in 2015. Next to the museum site, construction will soon begin on the High Line Headquarters, which will provide critical support for the maintenance and operations of the High Line. When it opens in 2015, the new Whitney museum, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop in partnership with Cooper, Robertson & Partners, will feature more than 50,000 square feet of gallery space, as well as outdoor exhibition spaces overlooking the High Line, a multi-use theater, and an education center for family and kid events. Currently, the corner of Gansevoort and Washington Street is active with construction crews clearing and excavating the Whitney site for work to begin on the foundations of the building in the coming months. Crews are starting to drive I-beams and heavy cylindrical steel casings deep into the ground. The casings will be filled with concrete and will become critical elements in supporting the foundations and steel structure that will follow next year. The new High Line Headquarters, designed through a collaboration between Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Beyer Blinder Belle, will be located adjacent to the new Whitney museum and the High Line. With direct access to the High Line, the new building will help us keep the park thriving by providing a home for staff and equipment, as well as a new public elevator, an information center, volunteer facilities, public bathrooms, and a public meeting room. The four-story building is designed to be a modern version of the historic warehouses that surround the High Line. The façade will feature masonry on the lower levels, and glass and steel on the upper levels. On the roof, exposed steel girders will echo the steel structure of the High Line itself. At street-level, the High Line Headquarters will extend under the park to create a restaurant with outdoor seating. The space is to be as transparent as possible. Large, operable doors will open up in good weather, letting in light and fresh air.We expect to begin construction in the coming weeks.Visit our blog to watch the museum’s preview video, view photos of construction, and learn more about the High Line Headquarters.
