For a study in big, big construction and transportation technology, make plans for the Panama Canal field trip scheduled on Feb. 15 as part of the U.S. Grains Council’s 9th International Marketing Conference and 52nd Annual Membership Meeting in Panama City, Panama. The Canal, completed in 1914, continues to be one of the biggest engineering feats ever built and still remains a relevant component in world trade infrastructure. The Council’s informational tour begins with the Miraflores Lock where members can admire the scope and grandeur of the original Canal.Next, the tour will visit a container yard, where gantry cranes dwarf the biggest farm equipment, to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of container shipping. Witness the frenzy of shipping activity and hear how Panama is planning to capitalize its location to become a major leader in container trade. Finally, a drive to Panama’s Pacific Coast where new, bigger locks are under construction will offer a prime opportunity to learn about the international effort to expand and streamline the Canal with the hope of revolutionizing modern shipping.
