Comments by Bassam Shakhashiri, Ph.D. President, American Chemical Society “Whether you’re listening to President Barack Obama in his State of the Union Address, members of Congress or candidates for office, they do agree on one thing: We must work to create an environment where well-paying jobs and the strong spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation will thrive in America.” “At the American Chemical Society (ACS), we concur that our nation’s economic recovery is directly tied to reinvigorating manufacturing and creating jobs across multiple sectors leading to broad-based prosperity. For example, more than 96 percent of all manufactured goods in the United States are touched by the business of chemistry, and the chemical enterprise employs more than 800,000 people. Furthermore, the chemical industry accounts for more than 10 percent of the total U.S. merchandise exports: $145 billion.” “Yet, despite the essential role chemists play in our nation’s economy, we have been hard-hit by the lack of jobs as well. In the last 20 years, the United States has lost 300,000 chemistry-based jobs.” “That is why ACS has advocated for strong, bi-partisan approaches to stimulate job growth, including: sustained support for scientific and medical research that leads to technological innovations, making our business climate more competitive through optimal tax and patent policies and most importantly, by greatly stimulating entrepreneurship and technology transfer. A Competitive U.S. Business Climate: the Role of Chemistry outlines policy recommendations in the areas of tax and trade, intellectual property, technology transfer/commercialization and small business and entrepreneurship.” “We must not forget that all manufacturing originally comes from someone’s entrepreneurial spirit and investment. Tomorrow’s jobs will come from today’s entrepreneurs.” “In 2011, an ACS task force released a study titled Innovation, Chemistry, and Jobs, which is a blueprint for stimulating entrepreneurship and innovation in the chemical sciences. The basic tenets can be applied to any scientific endeavour. The study found there are two basic areas in U.S. innovation that we must strengthen: early-stage innovation research and opening business channels so that entrepreneurs can take their innovations from the research bench to commercial success.” “Our history shows that such economic ingenuity creates new jobs in emerging, exciting fields. Our business leaders are among the most talented in the world at translating ingenuity into growth and innovation to prosperity. We are also pleased to hear President Obama continue to support science, technology, engineering and math education (STEM) to launch the next generation of discoverers and scientific entrepreneurs.”
chemists and business leaders, we stand poised to put these values to work on behalf of all Americans. We look forward to working with Congress and the Administration to craft public policies that will enable entrepreneurs to translate innovations to high-value products and well-paying jobs.” The American Chemical Society is a non-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. With more than 164,000 members, ACS is the world’s largest scientific society and a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

Liberalizzazioni e consumatori

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 25 gennaio 2012

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 25 gennaio 2012

Dott.
(Barbara Barbieri)

New York pressed outrage at the conviction of Italian journalist and politician Giuseppe (“Peppino”) Caldarola who had written an article criticizing a cartoon entitled ‘Fiamma Frankenstein’ that depicts fellow parliamentarian Fiamma Nirenstein, who is Jewish, with a hooked nose, the symbol of fascist Italy and the Star of David. Vauro, the author of the caricature which was published by the newspaper Il Manifesto, was acquitted by the same court of charges of anti-Semitism. Lauder called the ruling “a travesty and an insult.” “While the man who defends a Jewish woman is fined, the author of this blatantly anti-Semitic cartoon is acquitted and gets a free ride from the court to continue injecting venom into the political debate in Italy,” the WJC president declared in reaction. ”Nirenstein is an excellent lawmaker who does not shy away from doing political battle. Although one is entitled to disagree with her views, nobody is entitled to hold against her the fact that she is Jewish and dedicated to the wellbeing of Israel. Anti-Semitic or racist caricatures have nothing to do with satire, far from it; they are simply despicable.” Lauder called it “very worrying” that the judge had upheld the right to insult a Jew through by using age-old anti-Semitic imagery but denied the right of a journalist to accuse the cartoonist of being an anti-Semite.

The European Economic Model

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 25 gennaio 2012

The European growth model has been an engine for economic convergence during the past few decades and has delivered prosperity to hundreds of millions of people on the continent, says a new World Bank report “Golden Growth: Restoring the Luster of the European Economic Model”, launched today in Brussels. The newreport looks at long-term growth in Europe, paying special attention to the last two decades, and identifies what needs to be done to assure continued prosperity in the decades ahead. It assesses the six principal components of the European growth model: trade, finance, enterprise, innovation, labor, and government. Its main findings: most countries in Europe are doing well in trade and finance, many in enterprise and innovation, but few are doing well in labor and government. So Europe needs many changes to make governments and labor markets work better, fewer changes to foster innovation and productivity growth in enterprises, and fewer changes still to reform finance and trade. Stalled productivity, declining populations, and unsustainable fiscal imbalances have made many changes urgent.* To revitalize the European growth model, the report makes three sets of recommendations: restart the convergence machine that has allowed poorer countries become high income economies; rebuild “brand Europe” that has helped the region, with one-tenth of the world’s population, account for a third of the global economic output; and reassess what it takes to remain the world’s lifestyle superpower, with the highest quality of life on the planet.
Between 1950 and 1973, Western European incomes converged towards those in the United States. Then, until the early 1990s, the incomes of more than 100 million people in the poorer southern periphery—Greece, southern Italy, Portugal, and Spain—converged to those of advanced Europe. Starting with the first association agreements with Hungary and Poland in 1994, another 100 million in Central and Eastern Europe were absorbed into the European Union. Another 100 million in the candidate countries in Southeastern Europe are now benefiting from the same aspirations and similar institutions that have helped almost half a billion people achieve the highest standards of living. If European integration continues, the 75 million people in the Ukraine and other countries of the Eastern Partnership will profit in similar ways.Trade and financial integration are two of the strongest attributes of the European economic model. According to the report, the adjustments needed to strengthen these components are: better management of financial flows, quicker expansion of the modern services trade, and greater mobility of workers.
Europe is known for its combination of engineering and design. Since the mid 1990s, while Asia had a financial crisis and recovery and the United States had a technology boom and financial crisis, European enterprise has flourished. With few exceptions, every part of Europe has seen a growth in employment, productivity, and exports. But during the last decade, two growing shortfalls in productivity are threatening Europe’s global economic influence. The first is that since the mid-1990s, labor productivity in Europe’s leading economies has fallen relative to the United States and Japan. The productivity gap between advanced Europe and the United States today is more than twice what it was in the mid-1990s. The second is that enterprises in southern Europe have become less productive. To be competitive, productivity should have grown by about 3-4 percent each year during the 2000s. Instead, it fell by about 1 percent each year.

CommScope and Italian Operators Make Rome Metro Phone Call

Mappa della Metropolitana di Roma

“HICKORY, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The long-anticipated wiring of the Rome Metro’s passenger trains and stations for wireless coverage is becoming a reality. CommScope, Inc., a global leader in infrastructure solutions for communications networks, has been chosen by Italian operators Telecom Italia, Vodafone, WIND and H3G to provide and install a multi-operator, multi-band cellular coverage solution throughout the Rome Metro that will extend reliable wireless signals to passengers and staff throughout the system’s stations and passenger trains. The CommScope solution, featuring its ION-M optical distributed antenna system and HELIAX® transmission lines, will enable Rome’s citizens, visitors and tourists to enjoy reliable voice and data wireless services while riding on the Metro, including in tunnels and in stations. The three-phase project is expected to be completed in late 2012. “CommScope has an extensive history of providing wireless coverage and capacity solutions for metropolitan railways worldwide, including several in Italy,” said Samuel Buttarelli, sales director, Wireless Innovations, CommScope. “We are pleased to support the Italian mobile operators with the technology and expertise to enable them to deploy much-needed wireless coverage for their customers on the Rome Metro.” Wireless operators are faced with many challenges in providing service along railways, including tunnels and stations that block or restrict signals, high speed trains that complicate cellular hand-offs, and smartphone users who expect constant access to data services while onboard. Such demands typically require dedicated coverage and capacity solutions to ensure access for commuters and sufficient network capacity for operators. The project will enable 2G and 3G voice and data services for customers of Telecom Italia, Vodafone, WIND and H3G utilizing the GSM900, GSM1800 and UMTS frequencies utilized by the operators. “Multi-operator, multi-frequency band, and multi-technology standard are common scenarios when working on train projects such as these,” Buttarelli said. “Despite the complexities of providing wireless coverage in moving trains, narrow tunnels and enclosed stations, CommScope expects to quickly implement a successful solution with minimal impact on the existing infrastructure—resulting in greater passenger satisfaction and more loyalty to our operator customers.” CommScope previously completed a similar project that brought reliable wireless coverage to the metro system in Turin, and furnished equipment for wireless coverage in the Milan metro. ION is an easy-to-scale, fiber-based coverage and capacity solution for indoor and outdoor applications, available in multiple power levels with a unique multi-band, multi-operator platform. CommScope’s off-air repeaters include a full line of pico and micro class RF enhancers and macro class digital nodes. CommScope’s repeaters provide RF signals for wide area coverage through antennas and are self-diagnosing, self-adaptive and available in multiple power classes. CommScope is a world leader in providing coverage and capacity system solutions, including ION™ distributed antennas systems, Node series repeaters, HELIAX® coaxial cable, RADIAX® leaky cables, CellMax® indoor antennas and other passive components. CommScope, through its Andrew Solutions portfolio, has nearly 30 years of experience in providing, installing and managing complex radio signal distribution systems for railway tracks, large-scale buildings, radio operators and telephone operators around the world. Major projects have included the ICE high speed train line in Germany; metro rails in Beijing, Hong Kong, Moscow, and Montreal; major venues such as the Dallas Cowboys Stadium and World Cup 2010 stadiums, and numerous international airports. London. A survey conducted by job site, reed.co.uk, has found that personal interests play a primary role for young professionals when considering their ideal employer. The reed.co.uk Big Brands Survey conducted its research across 2,200 respondents in every age group, including employees in marketing jobs, as well as new recruits in wider sectors, such as finance and sales. Nearly 25% of Under 18 year olds cited ‘personal interest’ as the area they would most like to improve in their current employment- a trend reed.co.uk witnessed extend across all younger age groups. Nearly 20% of respondents aged between 18-24 years old emphasised the importance of ‘personal interest’ when stating potential improvements to their current employment. Younger professionals also cited their employers’ reputation and the quality of services or products provided as desirable improvements to existing employment. However younger professionals also highlighted the importance of receiving adequate training through employment. 13% of respondents, aged between 18-24 years old, confessed to seeking employment based solely on the ‘Training, courses and Development’ opportunities provided by the employer. For older jobseekers, employment desirables change, however. Over 41% of respondents, aged above 35, deemed the ‘pay, benefit and conditions’ offered by a prospective employer, as prime considerations when looking for a new job. Yet it’s ‘reputation’ that appears to unify all jobseekers. It seems nearly everyone, irrespective of age, would consider taking a job if they were working for a company they thought of as being reputable.
