The Panda and Kimberly Clark’s Free Pass from Greenpeace

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

WWF claims that halting “the degradation of the environment” is one of its primary objectives. Unfortunately it appears to have done very little – or nothing – to help Kimberly-Clark, one of WWF’s chief allies and one of the world’s leading producers of paper products, clean up its act in Washington state. Last year WWF and Kimberly-Clark agreed to expand the latter’s “membership in the Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN), a WWF initiative to eliminate illegal logging and conserve the world’ s most valuable and threatened forests.” However, despite closing its facility in Snohomish County in Washington State, Kimberly-Clark is being heavily criticized for polluting a river with “toxic substances linked to cancer in humans at 15 times the level the state considers safe.” So much for protecting the environment. Looks like WWF is in bed with a business that’s guilty for, well, “the degradation of the environment.” But where on earth is Greenpeace in all of this? From Greenpeace’s history they are usually all over any business that is even suspected of releasing dioxins, let alone found to have been complicit in their release. Why is Kimberly-Clark getting a pass? According to FSC’s 2009 Annual Report, Kimberly Clark boasted that they were increasing their FSC-certified tissue fiber by some 70 percent from 2007 levels. Last year Kimberly-Clark entered into a partnership with WWF whereby the WWF panda logo would be used on the company’s materials. If competitor SCA Hygiene’s £10 million quid pro quo with WWF on the panda logo is any indication, this deal likely cost millions to Kimberly-Clark. Kimberly-Clark has also partnered with WWF on “identifying, mapping and monitoring high conservation value forests in Sumatra, Indonesia, and to develop best practices for plantation for estry in that nation,” a not so veiled attempt to render the forestry industry in that country uncompetitive. One can only presume that Kimberly-Clark’s relationship with WWF and FSC has provided them with cover from any potential blowback from Greenpeace or any other anti-development NGO. WWF and Greenpeace are again playing good cop/bad cop alliance – or in this case, dirty good cop/dirty bad cop. This just goes to show how these NGOs can be paid off, surrendering any semblance of concern about the state of the environment as long as the businesses are kowtowing to their agenda. But for how long?

Australians Struggle with Cutting “Green Tape”

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

Unemployment is rising in Australia in regions that have not experienced the country’s mining boom. People are getting more intolerant of the cost to jobs of rapidly increasing Green policies. Australia’s Labor Party-run government recently declared it would cut “Green tape.” Then almost immediately after this announcement, a bill in the Parliament was introduced with so much “Green tape” that it will cost jobs in rural Australia while increasing the price of locally produced timber. As Judith Sloan, a columnist in The Australian newspaper, recently argued this bill “was never a good idea.” It is supposed to block imports of illegal timber, but as Sloan’s column notes, “illegal timber imported into Australia is in the range of a mere 2 per cent to 3 per cent.” And to pretend it is not just singling out timber producers in poor countries, the bill also requires Australian timber producers to show their legal timber is, well, legal. Does this make sense? It does if you realize the high cost of the regulations proposed. The aim is to make Australian timber so expensive that forest businesses will go under. Australia’s forest laws already protect biodiversity and create jobs. The Greens won’t concede the former because they want to stop the latter. The Consumers Alliance will be watching the status of Australia’s illegal logging bill – elected officials should follow th rough on their pledged opposition to anti-growth “Green tape.”

Greenpeace Goes Around The Bend

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

And now we’ve heard them all. Greenpeace claims that after two years of investigation they have found that “end users including major global car manufacturers – indirectly or directly source pig iron whose production is fueled by forest destruction and slave labour in their supply chain.” You hear that? Detroit is responsible for the destruction of the Amazon rain forest! The timing of this report’s release is also far too convenient, especially when figures released have revealed that “ U.S. manufacturing grew in April at the fastest pace in 10 months.” Thus, all Greenpeace is attempting to do is target a growth industry—it’s part of their playbook. But it’s curious that Greenpeace would make so much noise about the Amazon, when according figures published by the George Soros-backed Climate Policy Initiative (CPI), deforestation in Brazil has actually plummeted by some 70 percent. Rather than attempting to target America’s booming manufacturing sector, shouldn’t Greenpeace be out celebrating this noble achievement?

Greens Continue Campaign Against Conservation in Indonesia

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

Just last year Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, warned that Indonesia was still facing trouble from foreign green NGOs fundamentally opposed to the notion of economic development. But it looks like the greens will now have to come up with yet another excuse to oppose Indonesia’s economic rise, after Indonesia’s forestry sector announced plans to “suspend natural-forest clearing in Indonesia and start holding itself and its suppliers to a higher standard of forest conservation.” Thi s decision truly flies in the face of the claim that the country’s forestry industry is not doing enough to support conservation. Despite this positive measure, groups like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Greenpeace continue to remain dismissive and outright hostile. Bustar Maitar, head of Greenpeace’s forest campaign in Indonesia, stated that “It’s hard to believe this will become a breakthrough,” hardly the most substantive and robust critique. This is all because Greenpeace not only looks set to lose face in Indonesia; this move will undermine the greens’ campaign to promote the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). If green groups can no longer point fingers and make wild accusations against businesses that source their products from Indonesia, then how will they be able to justify bullying others into endorsing FSC? Greenpeace’s hostility towards Indonesia is well renowned. The onus is now entirely on Greenpeace, WWF and other groups to acknowledge the positive measures being taken in Indonesia, and drop their fundamental opposition to the robust commercial activity emanating from the country.

Big Ideas for Small Kitchens by Kutchenhaus

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

London,(PRNewswire)No room is too small for a fabulous kitchen all it needs is some cleverly thought through Kitchen ideas to ensure every corner of the room is used, whilst still looking great.Take a look at our top ten tips on how to make a big kitchen impression in your small space.
1. The most important thing in any small space that requires a kitchen is to ensure a top kitchen designer looks at the room dimensions first. They will then add in important things like window and door locations, plug sockets and water and boiler points. All these items will determine what space you have and how much needs changing. If you have a strict budget, then getting the design right is crucial if you want to avoid putting errors right later on.
2. Any good kitchen designer will also think through the different ways you will use your kitchen and how to avoid the usual kitchen blunders. We see the same problems time and again, like doors not opening properly, units which don’t fit, even drawers not fully opening simply due to bad kitchen design. -Get a good designer who you can trust and ensure you think about what you want.
3. Try to choose a kitchen which is light and bright and ideally has a reflection. With the combination of clever lighting, glass and mirrors, you can make the room seem much more spacious by choosing a pantone which works with the space. We always recommend gloss or high gloss in creams and ivory, as they work in small spaces and always create the wow factor.
4. Try to avoid clashing colours and too much pattern as these generally work best in larger rooms which can cope with bold design. You don’t want the room to have too many different colours or points of focus. Instead choose something practical and let the accessories do the talking.
5. Storage should be top of the list when it comes to making a small kitchen space work. Maxi height base units, which are available at Kutchenhaus Kitchens at no extra cost, increase storage by up to 20%. Combine this across all the units in the kitchen design and it can make quite a difference.
6. The general kitchen unit height in the UK today is 720mm; however you can get up to 900mm at some kitchen retailers, without having to pay out a fortune. Always ask about the heights of units and if they come at a standard height, if they do, then shop around. Remember that ‘standard’ isn’t always the cheapest option and it can in-fact suite a small space much better if you can customise your worktop heights accordingly.
7. Always opt to reduce the plinth in small kitchens to avoid wasted space. Again, any reputable retailer will offer you this, so shop around.
8. Appliances have come a long way over the last ten years and any small kitchen has more than its fair share of affordable, high quality appliances available which can really enhance the space. Look into options like the Neff oven with a slide away door, for those who don’t have the room for a conventional oven door for example. Speak to your designer for more options.
9. If you have always longed for an island in your kitchen but don’t have the space, right it down on your kitchen wish list and speak to your designer. You may be able to have a breakfast bar, or even a pull out table solution which means you can have a separate eating, working area, even in a small kitchen.
10. Lastly, list your priorities and those items you would like to have. Also think about your current kitchen, if you have one and what really annoys you about the space. That way when you get your new kitchen design, you can go through the lists and tick off everything step by step and make the right kitchen compromises if necessary.
To see how you can save space in your kitchen have a look at some real kitchen designs that we produced for Kutchenhaus customers – you may find some design inspiration too!

Arriva la feromone-seduction

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

Restare in Europa? (Orlando Masiero)

Who Safe Childbirth Checklist Programme

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Mag 2012

A new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) finds that a simple checklist-based patient safety programme for childbirth dramatically improved adherence to essential childbirth care practices at a pilot hospital in South India. Of 29 practices measured, 28 were improved after adoption of the checklist and overall adherence to essential practices more than doubled after the checklist was introduced. The study appears in the May 16, 2012 online edition of PLoS ONE at http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0035151
There are nearly 300,000 maternal deaths, 3.1 million newborn deaths, and 1.2 million intrapartum-related stillbirths taking place in low-income countries each year, of which the vast majority are preventable. This study offers “hope that use of this simple, low-cost tool can help birth attendants better adhere to universally accepted standards in childbirth care,” as indicated senior author Atul Gawande, Associate Professor in Health Policy and Management at HSPH and lead advisor for WHO Patient Safety’s childbirth and surgery safety checklist-based patient safety programmes.
This prospective before and after intervention study took place over six months at a First Referral Unit (level-II) birth facility located in Karnataka, India. The Safe Childbirth Checklist (SCC) programme led to dramatic improvements in healthcare worker adherence to essential childbirth-related clinical care standards. Healthcare workers provided on average 10 out of 29 (34%) essential clinical care standards at baseline and 25 out of 29 (86%) after introduction of the checklist (p<0.001). For example, rates of breastfeeding within 1 hour after birth increased from 50.4% to 94.6%.
The WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist builds on the success of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and targets the major causes of morbidity and mortality in mothers and their newborn babies around the time of delivery. It defines a core set of practical standards to enhance patient safety and includes a behaviour change package to help staff implement the checklist. At the programme’s core is a checklist that helps to ensure adherence to essential childbirth practices known to be associated with improved maternal, foetal, and neonatal health. Each item is a critical action that is commonly missed but proven to reduce complications and deaths.A large Ramdomised Controlled Trial led by researchers from Harvard School of Public Health and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is underway in Uttar Pradesh, India to evaluate the impact of this checklist-based patient safety programme on maternal and newborn health outcomes. Results of the study are expected by 2015.
The Safe Childbirth Checklist programme represents a collaborative effort of the WHO Patient Safety Programme, the Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health, and the Department of Reproductive Health and Research and Harvard School of Public Health, in addition to many other experts from around the world. WHO anticipates a draft release of the WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist by the end of the year.
