Washington January 19th, 2013 Americans came together to once again show that by giving back, we make our communities stronger. A tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service, the National Day of Service helped kick off the 57th Presidential Inauguration with a nationwide effort to give back. Volunteers worked together with national and local community service organizations at thousands of service projects in all 50 states and D.C.—and they have already pledged more than one million hours to ongoing service in their communities. Continuing a tradition they started during President Obama’s first inauguration in 2009, the first family contributed their own time to service yesterday, helping improve a school in northeast D.C. The Vice President and members of the President’s Cabinet, including Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, also participated in service projects in and around D.C. D.C. area residents as well as visitors in town for the inaugural festivities also participated in a service summit on the National Mall, featuring nearly 100 organizations and opportunities to get involved right away. Chelsea Clinton, the honorary chair of the Day of Service, stopped by to help out, along with Eva Longoria, Beau Biden, Ben Folds, Angela Bassett, Star Jones, and more. As President Obama begins his second term, he’s asking Americans to continue yesterday’s momentum and join him in committing to give back on a continuing basis. Pledge to keep strengthening your community through service.
