Private Equity institutional buyouts see wages drop by £10,000 four years later

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 3 dicembre 2014

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWorkers will not only be worse off when their firm is taken over by private equity through an institutional buyout (IBO), but their company’s performance will fall behind its rivals.New research has discovered that IBOs – defined as a highly leveraged transaction where one or more institutional investors act together to initiate a buyout deal – result in staff losses and a decrease in overall productivity.Geoffrey Wood, Professor of International Business at Warwick Business School, said: “Our findings suggest IBOs and their impact on managerial practices do not appear to be an effective mechanism for turning round failing firms.“I would argue, far from the notion they revitalise the acquired organisation and unlock dormant capabilities and value, our research suggests more often than not the opposite occurs.“Our core finding shows a significant loss in employment in firms subject to an IBO immediately following the takeover. What’s more, wages tend to fall well below the market rate.“Perhaps this could be partly excused from a business perspective if there was an increase in productivity and profitability, but we found even in that regard there was no evidence to suggest such improvements subsequent to the takeover.”In the paper The employment consequences of private equity acquisitions: The case of institutional buy outs Professor Wood, Marc Goergen, of Cardiff Business School, and Noel O’Sullivan, of Loughborough University’s School of Business and Economics, examined changes to employee numbers, employee productivity and employee remuneration as well as profitability over an 11-year window for 106 IBOs.They looked at IBOs undertaken in the UK between 1997 and 2006, investigating the monitored firms’ performance and employment and wage figures six years before takeover through to four years afterwards. They compared these organisations, against a group of firms with similar performance and another group from the same industry. The IBO companies’ median employment growth was 11 per cent five years before acquisition, falling down to 4.8 per cent the year after the deal.Figures on salary suggest a similar trend with companies seeing a salary reduction from a mean of £29,460 before the IBO to £28,520 following it. By contrast in that same period industry and sized matched companies saw the mean salary surge from £30,170 to £38,430 while performance matched companies saw their mean salary rise from £30,890 to £33,810. Four years after the IBO the mean salary was at £34,010, while in the control firms it was at £44,210 and £42,860 respectively, suggesting the mean workers’ salary at the IBO companies was as much as £10,000 less. The research also highlighted productivity, measured in the research by calculating real turnover over employees, was lower for the IBO firms than both industry and size-matched companies and performance-matched companies.Professor Wood commented: “Despite – or because of – pay cuts and job losses, productivity in the sample firms remained significantly lower than in the control firms.“This suggests that any supposed disciplinary benefits from job cuts, either in terms of ejecting the lowest strata of performers or incentivising surviving staff, have not resulted in material gains.“Indeed, the productivity and profitability of the IBO firms remain lower than for the control firms during the four-year period following the takeover, suggesting that a climate of insecurity in tenure and reward reduces employee productivity and firm profitability.”
Report co-author, Professor Goergen, Professor of Finance at Cardiff Business School, argues: “This new study does indeed uncover several negative effects on employment from private equity acquisitions. It is important to note that this is for a particular type of private equity acquisition, ie so called institutional buy-outs (IBOs). While we can’t deny the research revealed a post-IBO drop in employment and wages, the study doesn’t imply that all private equity acquisitions are bad. In truth, the debate on the effects of private equity acquisitions going forward needs to be much more nuanced, with a view to distinguishing between the types of private equity acquisition and the positive and negative impacts they generate.”

From Ebola outbreak to vaccine mistrust: why communication may help to save lives

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 3 dicembre 2014

virus-ebolaThe Ebola outbreak that is currently raging in West Africa and the Italian alarm over the flu vaccine safety are two of the most recent examples of how fear, concern, suspect, distrust and stigmatization may become powerful allies an epidemic can count on, when spreading in human communities. In fact, these elements can affect the dangerousness of a disease by allowing the diffusion of wrong or missing information and thus decreasing the efficacy of public health activity. This is the very reason why an effective risk communication may help to save lives.Health communication during epidemics will be the main focus of the final conference of the TELL ME project, which will take place in Venice, on December 4th and 5th.
TELL ME is a project funded by the European Union, whose members have been working for three years in order to create conditions to exploit the huge potential that the information society can offer in terms of participatory communication during epidemics and in epidemic preparedness. Such an approach would allow governments and health institutions to maximize opportunities and minimize risks during an infectious diseases outbreak. Members of the TELL ME projects come from public health, social sciences, behavioural sciences, political sciences, law, ethics, communication and media, and during the conference they will present useful communication tools and products with a potential for use by professionals in the field: a practical guide for outbreak communication, an agent-based simulation model for public health officials and decision makers and an e-learning course for primary healthcare workers. They will also show the new participative model for risk communication they developed, a model that would help public health authorities to secure optimal preparedness for infectious disease threats.Amongst the many speakers, there will be some experts external to the TELL ME project but whose contribution is highly relevant for the topic to be discussed: Karl Ekdahl from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Francesco Zamboni from the World Health Organization, Toby Merlin from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Brian McCloskey from the Public Health England, Nigel Dowdall from the UK Civil Aviation Authority, Cecilia Strada from Emergency and many others. The target audience for this conference are health policy makers, communications officials and representatives from public health authorities that operate at an international, European, national and local level, healthcare providers, civil servants, the pharmaceutical industry, NGOs and the media. Through their intervention, the members of the European project also aim to create a community where knowledge from similar initiatives can be shared and unique viewpoints can be expressed, with the aim of refining our defences against the continuing threats posed by infectious diseases at regional and international level.

A message for World AIDS Day from Caritas

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 3 dicembre 2014

caritasBy Michel Roy, Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis and Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Vitillo, Head of Delegation to the United Nations in Geneva and Special Advisor on HIV/AIDS and Health.“Every person is worthy of our giving.” With these words, Pope Francis called on all Catholics, and other people of faith and good will, to open their hearts to all in need and to treat them as sisters and brothers. He then assured those willing to sacrifice their own comfort, time, wealth, knowledge and skills for the good of others, “We achieve fulfillment when we break down walls and our heart is filled with faces and names!”The story of Caritas’ response to the HIV epidemics in different parts of the world goes beyond abstract strategies and policies, as important as they may be. Ours is a response that is measured, not only in realizing expected outcomes, but also by the greater enjoyment of human dignity among persons living with or affected by HIV. Ours is a response that reaches out with compassion and tangible support to countless widows, orphans, and other surviving loved ones as a way to honour the memory of some 39 million people who have died from AIDS-related causes during the past three decades. Ours is a response of walking with, not merely “doing for”, HIV-positive persons as they empower themselves to live fully despite the challenges they face as a result of the virus. The international experts tell us on this World AIDS Day 2014 that we must “close the gap” between the “haves” and “have-nots” in the global response to AIDS. We can accomplish this lofty goal by opening our hearts in solidarity and in the search for the common good. We can “close the gap” by challenging and changing the structures that prevent some 25 million adults and children from access to life-saving anti-retroviral medications. We can “close the gap” by looking beyond the “quick fix” solutions for HIV prevention that have been proposed for the last 30 years and, in the words of Pope Francis, by “going out to meet” those at risk of HIV infection “with creative love” as we “help them to rediscover their dignity and to revive those inner strengths, those personal talents” of “men and women created in the image and likeness of God.” We can “close the gap” by fully welcoming HIV-positive refugees and displaced persons who too often are denied access to health care in the countries where they have sought freedom and a more positive future for themselves and their families. We can “close the gap” when we reject “the culture of comfort, which makes us think only of ourselves, makes us insensitive to the cries of other people”Above all, let us give priority attention to the HIV-infected children who have not benefited from the same pace of progress, as that enjoyed by adults, in making medicines available. We must continue to “close the gap” in the pediatric AIDS response by advocating with governments and pharmaceutical companies to develop more “child friendly” medicines so that we can offer these children the possibility of living beyond their first or second birthdays and so that we too can benefit from the society of tomorrow which they can help us build. Finally, we can “close the gap” by overcoming our in-born tendencies to blame others for their conditions of poverty, of marginalization, or even of HIV infection. Universal access for all people living with HIV, not just to medicines, but to full life and dignity, will only be accomplished by rejecting all forms of discrimination and stigma toward those living with or affected by HIV. Let us base our “roadmap” for Caritas’ ongoing commitment to the global HIV response on this appeal of Pope Francis: “… we must open ourselves to the peripheries, also acknowledging that, at the margins too, even one who is cast aside and scorned by society is the object of God’s generosity. We are all called not to reduce the Kingdom of God to the confines of the “little church” — our “tiny little church” — but to enlarge the Church to the dimensions of the Kingdom of God. However, there is one condition: wedding attire must be worn, that is, charity toward God and neighbour must be shown.”

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 3 dicembre 2014
