Civil Liberties MEPs to debate concerns over French surveillance law

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 2 luglio 2015

StrasbourgThe Civil Liberties Committee will debate France’s controversial new law on surveillance powers on Thursday 2 July, from 16.30 to 17.15. MEPs will raise concerns about the compatibility of some of the law’s provisions with the European treaties with the Commission’s Director for Criminal Justice, Francisco Fonseca Morillo.
The new French law on surveillance, approved by the National Assembly on 23 June and the Senate on 24 June, allows the French authorities to intercept and spy on citizens’ communications under the pretext of national security, say MEPs who requested the debate in committee.MEPs are likely to ask the Commission to investigate whether the law is in line with the EU treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, and the French government to clarify whether the European Parliament’s buildings on French territory, in Strasbourg, will be subject to surveillance operations under this law.
The extensive scope of grounds allowing for surveillance by intelligence services, the data collection and retention mechanisms, the use of the information (purpose limitation), oversight and rights of individuals are others issues to be addressed by MEPs.

History beckons for McDowell

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 2 luglio 2015

McDowellGraeme McDowell is looking to become the first player for 77 years to win the Alstom Open de France three years running at Le Golf National this week. But the Northern Irishman will have to tame a very demanding layout, tough competition and extremely warm weather conditions. Not since Marcel Dallemagne in 1938 has someone lifted Continental Europe’s oldest Open three times in succession, and only five players have ever landed a hat-trick of European Tour titles in the same event – with McDowell hoping to join an illustrious list which currently features Ian Woosnam, Sir Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els. “Having a chance to win a tournament three times in a row is very special,” said the 2010 US Open Champion. “I’ve always enjoyed this golf course, right back in the early days when I would come here.”Martin Kaymer returns to one of his favourite courses at Le Golf National this week optimistic about his chances of extending his exemplary Alstom Open de France record. Having finished seventh here as a rookie in 2007 – only the second top ten finish on The European Tour of Kaymer’s career – the 30 year old’s record since reads 79-1-6-4-70-13-12. Victory in 2009 came in a play-off against Lee Westwood, and Kaymer feels that the 2018 Ryder Cup host course represents one of the outstanding European Tour venues. “The golf course looks good to me,” said the two-time Major Champion. “It will be an exciting week I think. I know that I like that golf course; I know that I have been successful here before. There’s no reason why I shouldn’t play well.”Being runner-up to Kaymer was one of four top ten finishes in the event for Westwood, who is returning to the event for the first time since 2012. “I’m very happy to be back; it’s a fantastic course,” said the former World Number One. “I’ve come close here in the past. It’s been given The Ryder Cup in a few years’ time, as well, so that shows how strong a golf course it is.”Alex Levy and Victor Dubuisson are likely to shoulder the expectations of the home supporters this week at Le Golf National. Thomas Levet delighted the locals in 2011, whilst Jean-François Remesy landed back-to-back home titles in 2004 and 2005, and hopes of another French winner on Sunday are high with World Number 37 McDowell1Dubuisson and World Number 61 Levy the most likely candidates.Ryder Cup star Dubuisson has been going through a quiet spell by his lofty standards, but a top-20 finish in Munich last week hinted that he could be getting back to the sort of form that saw him win the Turkish Airlines Open in 2013 and add four runner-up finishes last term. “For every player on every tournament, the goal is to win. But the Albatros course is tought, undoubtedly the toughest we play all year on The European Tour. On this track, a missed shot can cost two or three points. To master it, you have to play four rounds under par,” said the 25 year old from Cannes. The 24 year old Levy won twice on The European Tour last season, and has been in good form of late having finished third in Sweden and China, and tied for 27th at the US Open. “It was a long week for me at the US Open and unfortunately I had to withdraw from the BMW International Open because I needed a break,” said Levy. “I practised for two days last week and I feel good. It’s great to be here – it’s a great golf course, fantastic golf course and excellent tournament. It’s an exciting week for the French players and it’s going to be an amazing tournament for me.” (photo: McDowell)
