new yorkNew York. Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina on Tuesday called on the international community to support the fight against inequities in Latin America, which together with Sub-Saharan Africa constitute the world’s most unequal regions.Addressing the UN General Assembly, President Medina said: “The post-2015 development agenda represents an excellent opportunity to prioritise addressing the main obstacle to sustainable development: inequality. The fight against inequities is the starting point to address most of the global challenges we face, most especially in Latin America.” “High rates of poverty are compounded by high inequality,” he added. The President pointed out how the positive development experience of the Dominican Republic hinged on a clear agenda shared and put into practice by an alliance between the private sector, civil society and the government, in order to bring about real and sustainable change.Medina also condemned the burden on development and high cost in lives of the “war on drugs” in Latin American countries. Pointing out that the United Nations General Assembly will be holding a Special Session of the topic of drugs next year, the Dominican President called for a new international consensus, which allows space for national Governments to tailor policies to local realities.
“We have a shared responsibility,” concluded President Medina. “Let us work together towards equity, solidarity and the just distribution of the common resources of this planet we share.”
