An important pan-European distinction and reward

smile-of-the-childThe “European Hotline for Missing Children 116000” operated by “The Smile of the Child” in Greece was evaluated and certified with the maximum score of 100%. A joint press conference organized by the European Commission’s Representation in Greece, the Office of the European Parliament in Greece and “The Smile of the Child” was held on Wednesday, 28 September to announce the important European distinction for Greece and “The Smile of the Child” in the framework of the accreditation of the “European Hotline for Missing Children 116000”, as well as the new certification of the volunteer dog teams of the Greek Organization by the international association NSARDA.
In their addresses, the Head of the EC Representation, Panos Carvounis and the Head of the EP Office, Leonidas Antonakopoulos, praised the work of “The Smile of the Child” -well-recognized by the European Institutions- and congratulated the President of the BoD of the Greek Organization, Costas Yannopoulos, for its longstanding contribution to society. Both officials also expressed their steady support to the difficult work of the Organization.The President of the Organization “The Smile of the Child” thanked the organizers for their hospitality and highlighted the importance of cooperating with the European institutions. “Today’s event is about the pan-European distinction of Greece and our Organization, which operates the European Hotline for Missing Children 116000, as well about our well-trained and specialized scientific staff and volunteers dealing with all cases of missing children regardless their religion, color or ethnicity, directly and in a coordinated way with all the competent actors.” Congratulating statements through recorded messages were addressed by Maud de Boer-. Buquicchio, President of Missing Children Europe (video ) and Harold Barrows, President of the National Search and Rescue Dog Association. The volunteer dog teams, comprised of internationally recognized and certified dogs and their handlers, members of the Search and Rescue Team “Thanasis Makris” of “The Smile of the Child”, also took part in this event. These teams are activated in the case of a missing minor in an urban or natural environment, to search for a specific missing child based on the scent provided to them, but also in cases of disasters. It is worth mentioning that the dog teams of the Team “Thanasis Makris” are the only ones in Greece having been certified by the international association NSARDA (National Search and Rescue Dog Association UK).
In the framework of the project “Minimizing violence through quality control: Monitoring & Evaluating 116000 Hotlines to prevent, support and protect missing children” realized by Missing Children Europe (MCE) with funding from the EU, the “European Hotline for Missing Children 116000” operated in Greece by “The Smile of the Child” was evaluated among other nearly 20 116000 hotlines in other European countries.Independent evaluators, through meetings, detailed questionnaires and an on-site evaluation visit to the Operational Center of the Hotline 116000 in Athens, and having considered the following criteria.
