Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

BIGLIETTI: Interi: da 12 euro a 20 euro, più prevendita Giovani: under 30: 8 euro; under 18: 5 euro http://www.concertiiuc.it

Any physical activity in elderly better than none at all for reducing cardiovascular risk

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

Sophia Antipolis. Any physical activity in the elderly is better than none at all for reducing cardiovascular risk, according to an 18-year study in more than 24 000 adults published today in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. “We know that regular physical activity has major health benefits,” said first aSophia Antipolisuthor Dr Sangeeta Lachman, a cardiologist at the Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.“Healthy adults are advised to do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous intensity aerobic exercise to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease,” she continued.2 “These recommendations are based primarily on research in middle-aged adults and we wanted to know whether regular physical activity yields comparable cardiovascular health benefits in elderly people.”
This study compared the association between different levels of physical activity and the risk of cardiovascular disease in elderly to middle-aged individuals. The hypothesis was that exercise would be equally beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk in middle-aged and elderly individuals. The study included 24 502 adults aged 39 to 79 years who participated in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC) Norfolk cohort, a prospective population study that is part of the ten-country collaboration EPIC study. The cohort was primarily designed to assess dietary and other determinants of cancer, but data were also collected on determinants of cardiovascular disease.
Participants were recruited between 1993 and 1997 from registries of general practices in the county of Norfolk, UK. On enrollment into the study, participants completed a health and lifestyle questionnaire, underwent a standardised physical examination and gave blood samples. Physical activity during work and leisure time was assessed with a questionnaire and participants were categorised as active, moderately active, moderately inactive and inactive.Patients were followed up until 31 March 2015 for hospitalisation or death from cardiovascular events (coronary heart disease or stroke), which were identified by linking the participant’s unique National Health Service number with the East Norfolk Health Authority (ENCORE) database.Physical activity levels and time to cardiovascular events were investigated in three age categories: less than 55, 55 to 65 (middle-aged), and over 65 years of age (elderly).During a median follow-up of 18 years there were 5 240 cardiovascular disease events. In elderly participants, hazard ratios for cardiovascular events were 0.86, 0.87, and 0.88 in moderately inactive, moderately active and active people, respectively, compared to inactive people. In those aged 55–65 and less than 55 years, the associations were directionally similar, but not statistically significant.
Dr Lachman said: “We observed an inverse association between physical activity and the risk of cardiovascular disease in both elderly and middle-aged people. As expected, there were more cardiovascular events in elderly participants, which could explain why the association only reached significance in this age category.”“Elderly people who were moderately inactive had a 14% reduced risk of cardiovascular events compared to those who were completely inactive,” continued Dr Lachman. “This suggests that even modest levels of physical activity are beneficial to heart health. Elderly people should be encouraged to at least do low intensity physical activities such as walking, gardening, and housework.”She concluded: “Given our aging population and the impact of cardiovascular disease on society, a broader array of public health programmes are needed to help elderly people engage in any physical activity of any level and avoid being completely sedentary.”

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

Sean_ReillyA Santa Clara University environmental science and biology alumnus, Sean Reilly ’16 has been named one of 32 American Rhodes Scholars for 2018. Reilly joins a long list of successful leaders to win the prize, including three previous Santa Clara University alumni, as well as luminaries such as former President Bill Clinton and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof.A Rhodes Scholarship, one of the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship awards in the world, provides all expenses for two years of study at England’s University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars are chosen for their scholarly achievements, character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their leadership potential.“This award is a great honor and a fantastic opportunity,” said Reilly, who is currently a Fulbright Scholar working in Australia. “I am excited to continue the work I began at Santa Clara at Oxford and to become a leader in worldwide environmental change grounded in sound scientific fact.”
Students from Harvard University, Stanford University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are also among this year’s winners, which were announced Nov. 18.“The Rhodes Scholarship is a prestigious honor with worldwide recognition, and we are very proud of our accomplished alumnus Sean,” said SCU President Michael E. Engh, S.J. “His commitment to sustainability, leadership, and social justice is a true testament to the Jesuit ideals we hold dear.”Reilly’s academic career at Santa Clara’s College of Arts and Sciences was an illustrious one. He received a Fulbright research grant in 2016 to develop a management plan for the invasive pond apple of Australia, which is simultaneously a food and timber resource as well as a formidable bioinvader wiping out native ecosystems.A member of the University Honors Program who worked with the Center for Sustainability, Reilly won three SCU Sustainability Champion Awards (one individual and two collaborative); was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a junior; won the SCU Environmental Science Research Award; and won the Distinguished Researcher Award from the School for Field Studies in 2015.Reilly also won the Orella Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences for the graduating senior with the top GPA in upper-division 5-unit math, science or computer science courses.
He also won a Johnson Scholars Research Fellowship in 2015, supporting a summer research project studying stable isotopes in California rainwater samples. He chaired the Green Club and was the student body representative and a panel moderator during the 2015 University-wide conference on Pope Francis’ letter on the environment, Laudato Si.“Sean’s capacity to excel lies not only in his capacity to grasp challenging concepts from the classroom and research literature, but also in his ability to apply those ideas to the world around him,” said Hari Mix, assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences with whom Reilly conducted research on interactions between atmospheric moisture, dust, and mountains to produce extreme precipitation in California. At Oxford University, Reilly plans to complete a master’s degree in mathematical modelling and scientific computing and in environmental change and governance.“My ultimate goal is to combine my diverse experiences to help communities address anthropogenic impacts on their ecological surroundings,” said Reilly. “My research will require sophisticated modelling to explore questions projecting into the future and on spatial scales too large or complicated to physically sample.” “Sean’s self-motivated learning and analytical reasoning abilities are matched by a sincere commitment to inclusive civic action, and a strikingly sophisticated ability to engage social science approaches for addressing pressing problems,” said Chris Bacon, associate professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences.Other Santa Clara University graduates who have won the Rhodes award are Aven Satre Meloy ’13, Noelle Lopez ’09, and former FDA head Arthur Hayes ’55.In applying for the Rhodes Scholarship, Reilly was assisted by Santa Clara University’s Honors Program and Office of Student Fellowships. Reductive Augmentation Results in Rounder Appearance After Breast Reduction

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

san carlos californiaIn a just published study in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery by Paul Chasan, MD, FACS, founder of Ranch and Coast Plastic Surgery in Del Mar, CA, reductive augmentation is demonstrated to be the best choice for women who want a higher and more round breast after breast reduction surgery. Although the procedure had been done by Dr. Chasan for many years, it underwent a variety of modifications. The study represents the technique in its most recent form. See the study here.Breast reduction results in a high level of patient satisfaction. Multiple generations of the technique have resulted in better shape, less scars and more predictable results. However, even with the most proficient and technically advanced breast reductions, there continue to be limitations with respect to the shape of the breast. With time, there is almost always a lack of superior pole fullness (roundness and fullness of the upper part of the breast).“Historically, most breast reduction procedures are prone to bottoming out and lack upper pole fullness,” said Dr. Chasan. “In this article, I review breast shape classifications and describe a one-stage technique for breast reduction combined with breast augmentation called reductive augmentation to solve the problem.” He added that for women who want their large breasts reduced, adding implants during the surgical procedure seems counter-intuitive. But when breast tissue is removed without adding implants, breasts can sag as time goes on. This technique is also extremely useful for correcting breast asymmetry, as well as revising significant pseudoptosis (drooping of the bottom of the breast) in the patient who has previously undergone breast augmentation with or without mastopexy (sagging breasts).
For the study, thirty-five patients underwent reductive augmentation, of which 12 were primary surgeries, and 23 were revisions. There was an average tissue removal of 255 and 227 g, respectively, per breast for the primary and revision groups. Six of the reductive augmentations were performed for gross asymmetry. Fourteen patients had a previous mastopexy, and three patients had a previous breast reduction. The average follow-up was 26 months.“The goal of the study was to demonstrate reductive augmentation is an effective one-stage method for achieving a more round-appearing breast with upper pole fullness, both in primary breast reduction candidates and in revisionary breast surgery,” Dr. Chasan said. “For breast reduction patients who desire smaller breasts and also want rounder, ‘perkier’ breasts, reductive augmentation will provide the best possible results.” He said that this technique can also be applied to those patients with significant asymmetry. The reductive augmentation procedure takes about four hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. Most of Dr. Chasan’s reductive breast augmentation patients are up and about within three to four days after surgery.Dr. Chasan is double board-certified (plastic surgery and general surgery) and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is a diplomate of the American College of Surgeons and is on the medical staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, California. Dr. Chasan has written many clinical papers in peer reviewed journals, and he has innovated several surgical techniques. He regularly lectures to other plastic surgeons on the field of revisionary breast surgery for Allergan, the company that makes breast implants.

Carl Buddig & Company Honored with 24th Annual Dean’s Award

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

Group Portrait of Principals of Carl Budding & Co. Inc.This week, Carl Buddig and Company was honored with the prestigious Dean’s Award at the 24th Annual Illinois Family Business of the Year Awards for their commitment to family business, supply chain management, social responsibility and emerging markets. The award and ceremony are presented by The Family Business Center at Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business. Presented in six categories, the annual awards recognize companies with exceptional commitment to family and family business. Those recognized have demonstrated positive family/business linkage, multigenerational family business involvement, contributions to industry and community, and innovative business practices and strategies.
Carl Buddig began distributing meats throughout Chicago in 1943. He and his family worked hard to earn the trust of meat packers and retailers, treating each with same honesty and respect they valued in their own family. The idea of family was at the heart of everything Carl did, including relationships with employees and customers. With Carl Buddig & Company celebrating 75 years of family ownership, the fourth generation of Buddigs have now entered the business. Today the company has grown to almost 2000 employees. Or, as the current management team sees it, 2000 families who are all part of the Buddig family.“We consider our employees, sales associates, customers and the community to be an extension of our Buddig family,” said Bob Buddig, 3rd Generation CEO. “We are honored to receive an award that recognizes our commitment to family, and we will continue to pass down the values that have served us well as a family and a business for generations to come.”
Carl Buddig and Company collaborates to bring high quality lunchmeat, sausage, and ready to eat meals to consumers nationally through various channels from grocery to food service and convenience stores. In addition to the quality sliced lunch meats American families loved for generations, the Buddig family of products has expanded over the years with the acquisition of the Old Wisconsin Sausage Company in 1981. The recent acquisition of CBQ also brings ready to eat meats to the table and the company will launch Kingsford brand BBQ Ribs and entrees this December. Carl Buddig & company continues to expand, developing new product innovations to meet changing consumer needs in the US and through export.
Nourishing the extended Buddig family also includes giving back to the company’s community and the neighborhoods where Buddig’s large workforce lives—most within 30 minutes of their plant. In addition to individual philanthropy from the family to help support the community, Carl Buddig is a high touch organization with employees at all levels contributing to charitable activities year-round through the Cancer Walk, local food drives and volunteer days. Most recently, Carl Buddig & Company donated 250,000 pounds of meat to the Greater Chicago Food Depository and coordinated multiple volunteer days on site to package the meat for distribution.“Family businesses like Carl Buddig and Company that achieve tremendous success and growth while still remaining true to the essence of family business are the quiet heroes of our economy and our communities,” said Anne Smart, director of the Loyola Family Business Center. “We recognize Buddig’s efforts and congratulate them for 75 years of a job well done.” (photo: Carl Buddig)

“Cardiometabolic Risk and Vascular Disease: from Mechanisms to Treatment”

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

stoccolmaStoccolma dal 01 al 03 dicembre 2017 “Cardiometabolic Risk and Vascular Disease: from Mechanisms to Treatment”.

melanieMelanie Lundquist, philanthropist, and co-founder of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, participated in the closing plenary of the 2017 Milken Institute California Summit held at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center on November 8, 2017. Moderated by the Milken Institute’s founder, Michael Milken, the plenary topic was broadly defined as “Investing in California’s Future.” Lundquist focused her remarks almost entirely on investing in public education as the major driver for California’s future.Lundquist highlighted the Partnership’s achievements at 18 high-need schools, serving over 14,500 students, including more than doubling graduation rates from 36% to 81%. Lundquist pointed out that additional support provided by the Partnership, which includes teacher and parent capacity building, advocacy programs, and professional development for principals and teachers, amounts to only $675 per student above California’s per-student annual funding.Lundquist added that Partnership supports — paid for by philanthropic dollars — mean that students in Boyle Heights, South Los Angeles and Watts have been lifted up and not held back, a critical component to California’s future. In closing the session, Milken asked panelists: “If you had the ability to enact one major policy change, new law or regulation — or stop an existing one, what would you choose?” Lundquist was the first to respond, saying that she would “…want to see something enacted that would show value for our teachers.”Lundquist went on to discuss the high cost of living in California — especially the high cost of housing. She underscored the student loan burden teachers face and that something bold, like free or significantly subsidized housing for teachers, would be her recommendation for major policy change to benefit educators – and all Californians, by supporting and bolstering the state’s teachers.
“I appreciated the excellent job Mike did in moderating the discussion and how we both share a passion for improving public education. His support of public education and teachers is inspiring. Allowing me to share the success of the Partnership—as a way to invest in California’s future, was a privilege,” said Lundquist. (photo: melanie)

Dati sull’occupazione smentiscono il governo

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 novembre 2017
