Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 15 aprile 2018

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 15 aprile 2018

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 15 aprile 2018

Mobile Ecosystem to Be Worth More Than $50 Billion to West Africa Economy by 2022, Finds New GSMA Study

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 15 aprile 2018

The mobile industry in West Africa is forecast to contribute more than $50 billion annually to the region’s economy by 2022, according to a new GSMA study published today at the ‘Mobile 360 – West Africa’ event being held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The new report, The Mobile Economy: West Africa 2018, calculates that the region’s mobile ecosystem contributed $37 billion in value last year, equivalent to 6.5 per cent of GDP1, and will grow to $51 billion (7.7 per cent of GDP) within five years. The economic contribution over this period will be spurred by strong subscriber growth and the move to mobile broadband networks and services. “Today’s report demonstrates the vital role West Africa’s mobile ecosystem is playing in driving economic growth and empowering citizens across the region, as well as in delivering against many of the targets of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals,” said John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer at the GSMA. “However, further work is required as more than half of West Africa’s citizens are not yet connected to a mobile service, excluding them from the socio-economic benefits that mobile delivers.”
At the end of 2017, there were 176 million unique mobile subscribers2 across the West Africa sub-region, which comprises the 15 members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)3. This is equivalent to a penetration rate of 47 per cent of the region’s population, up from just 28 per cent at the start of the decade. Strong subscriber growth is forecast to continue over the coming years; 72 million additional mobile subscribers are expected to be added in West Africa by 2025, lifting subscriber penetration to 54 per cent. Much of this growth is attributable to the demographic situation across the region, as large youth populations are expected to take out mobile subscriptions as they reach adulthood. According to the report, more than 40 per cent of the population in many countries across Sub-Saharan Africa are below the age of 16.Meanwhile, the transition to mobile broadband in West Africa is being driven by the expansion of 3G and 4G networks, lower data tariffs and the increasing affordability of smartphones. 3G networks now cover two-thirds of the regional population and 4G adoption is also rising rapidly. As of March 2018, there were 29 live 4G (LTE) networks in nine countries across West Africa, six of which have launched in the last year. 3G and 4G together accounted for 36 per cent of West African mobile connections in 2017 and are forecast to rise to 94 per cent of the total by 2025. Local operators are expected to spend $8 billion (capex) over the next two years building out and upgrading their networks.

Report positive results from two double-blind

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 15 aprile 2018

Soterix Medical Inc (SMI) is pleased to report positive results from two double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trials of its proprietary transcranial Direct Current Stimulation-Limited Total Energy (tDCS-LTE) technology for the treatment of depression. The Depression tDCS-LTE system is unique in providing drug-free therapy with minimal side effects while maximizing energy delivery to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) region, which is implicated in depression control.
The first clinical trial reported tDCS-LTE was an effective, safe, and tolerable add-on intervention in patients with type I or II bipolar disorder in a major depressive episode and receiving a stable pharmacologic regimen. In this 59 patient randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind trial, tDCS-LTE produced an average 14-point improvement in Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17) scores, after just 12 treatments. The benefit persisted for over a month, with common side-effects no different than placebo. The results of the “Bipolar Depression Electrical Treatment Trial [BETTER]” were published in JAMA Psychiatry. The second clinical trial reported tDCS-LTE to be superior to placebo producing an average 8 point decrease in the HDRS-17 after 15 consecutive weekdays of treatment (the induction phase), followed by 7 weekly treatments (the taper phase). In this 245 patient double-blind trial, patients received tDCS-LTE plus oral placebo, sham tDCS-LTE plus escitalopram (an SSRI drug), or sham tDCS-LTE plus oral placebo. The tDCS-LTE group had higher rates of itching or tingling, tinnitus, and nervousness than the other groups. The drug group side-effects included sleeplessness and severe constipation. At the trial endpoint, as the tDCS-LTE dose was tapered to weekly while escitalopram was maintained at a high daily dose, patients who received tDCS-LTE maintained significantly improved HDRS-17 scores compared to placebo while patients on high-dose escitalopram had slightly more improved HDRS-17 with noted side-effects. The results of the “ELECT-tDCS” trial were published in New England Journal of Medicine.
Physicians in the EU, Singapore, Australia, and Brazil interested in providing Soterix Medical Depression tDCS-LTE therapy are eligible for the Soterix Medical’s Partnership program which includes support on the entire patient treatment pipeline, hands-on training and staff certification, and connection to our network of physician researchers.

Karateka Chooses Earth Networks for Severe Weather Early Warning and Lightning Detection

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 15 aprile 2018

Earth Networks today announced that it was selected by the state of Karnataka to implement live weather monitoring, lightning detection and real-time alerting to power life-saving weather forecasting and alerting services across the state. The announcement was made ahead of the InterMET Asia 2018 exhibition and conference in Singapore. The Earth Networks Total Lightning Network in India helps safety and disaster management agencies provide the public with advance warning of incoming severe weather to save lives, reduce injuries and minimize property damage. The network already benefits numerous Indian states, including Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. The addition of Karnataka enables its residents and visitors to access detailed weather information such as localized forecasts and real-time severe weather alerts not previously available in the region.“The lack of reliable forecasts and consistent weather information means many areas of India are at a disadvantage when it comes to weather safety,” said Jim Anderson, SVP Global Sales at Earth Networks. “Our goal is to change that by building relationships with disaster management agencies and local partners in India, to put critical weather information in the hands of the people who are most at risk from flooding, thunderstorms and other destructive weather events.” Operating in 90+ countries, Earth Networks Total Lightning Network is the most comprehensive lightning network in the world. Its ability to monitor in-cloud lightning, in addition to cloud-to-ground lightning enables faster localized storm alerts so forecasters can warn of other forms of severe weather such as downbursts, heavy rains, hail and high winds.“Lightning and dangerous storms kill more people in Karnataka than any other weather phenomena, and have a devastating impact on both livestock and crops,” said Dr. G.S. Srinivasa Reddy, Director of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). “This life-saving early warning system now disseminates information about lightning and other dangerous conditions directly to every village in the state through our call center and free mobile application.” The partnership will benefit not only government and civil defense agencies who will be able to access Earth Networks’ products that further aid the state in saving lives and reducing property damage that occurs due to severe weather, but also private industry partners who will gain new weather data sets to optimize operations, analyze trends and protect critical infrastructure.
