Purdue University Global Holds First Commencement; Over 9,000 Graduates Makeup Historic Cohort

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 giugno 2018

Purdue University Global held its first graduation ceremony at the Rosemont Theater outside of Chicago, at which more than 9,000 online graduates were recognized for their academic accomplishments. Purdue Global became Indiana’s newest public institution of higher education earlier this year, when it officially acquired Kaplan University, expanding Purdue’s land-grant mission by providing access to higher education for the tens of millions of working adults who started but did not complete a college degree and for others unable to attend a traditional college campus.
Andrew S. Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Kaplan, Inc., gave the commencement address, and Purdue President Mitch Daniels offered his commendations to the graduates at this historic ceremony. Both individuals were instrumental in creating this new institution, which places Purdue as one of the largest online degree-granting systems in public higher education.Mr. Rosen’s message to the more than 650 graduates attending the ceremony in person focused on the importance of their individual academic accomplishments achieved at a time in their own lives, when most are also juggling full-time employment and family obligations.”There is a long history in American higher education of incumbents resisting the expansion of access to higher education, but an equally remarkable history of the new institutions overriding that resistance and adding to the strength of our system,” Andrew S. Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Kaplan, Inc., explained in his remarks to the assembled graduates. “There is something so fitting that this new university was forged from two institutions that were part of different waves of innovation in America’s higher education history, each of which overcame traditionalist skepticism by delivering consistent excellence over time. Our graduating class today is largely made up of people the traditional education system still often ignores.”Graduate and undergraduate degrees, including Doctoral degrees, were awarded from the Schools of Business and Information Technology, Education, Health Sciences, Nursing, Open College, Concord Law School and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Dr. Betty Vandenbosch, Chancellor of Purdue University Global, conferred the degrees.

Presentazione del volume “La Provincia di Torino. La sua trasformazione, i suoi Presidenti. E poi?

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 giugno 2018

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 giugno 2018

New Mobility Ecosystem

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 giugno 2018

CarBlock, the world’s first blockchain-based transportation solution built on data generated by smart devices announced today that it has joined MOBI, the Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative, to explore blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) for use in the development of a digital mobility ecosystem that could make transportation safer, more affordable, and more widely available. CarBlock is collaborating with the MOBI and other industry, government, and non-profit partners to foster a digital environment where users – both businesses and consumers – may securely record driving data, manage ride-share and car-share transactions, and store vehicle identity and usage information.Blockchain technology sends information over a network of independent computers, known as a distributed ledger, intended to ensure that transactions are secure and data privacy, ownership rights, and integrity are protected. CarBlock and partners believe that blockchain technology may create transparency and trust among users, reduce risk of fraud, and reduce frictions and transaction costs in mobility, such as fees or surcharges applied by third parties.“We believe in MOBI and its broad abilities to revolutionize the transportation industry. We can see its potential in a variety of use cases, including the ability to expand our own offerings and service more drivers,” said Julie Wang, Cofounder and Head of Ecosystems, CarBlock.Through an open-source approach to software tools and standards, the MOBI consortium hopes to stimulate more rapid and scalable adoption of blockchain technology applications by other companies developing autonomous vehicle and mobility services. CarBlock is pleased to join MOBI to collaborate with global partners on the development of blockchain-enabled vehicle data and mobility services applications.

Susan G. Komen Statement on TAILORx Study Citing Chemotherapy Not Needed for Some Breast Cancer Patients

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 giugno 2018

Susan G. Komen®, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, issued the following statement regarding a new study partially funded by the organization – called Trial Assigning Individualized Options for Treatment, or TAILORx. The study shows that many women with early stage breast cancer may not need to undergo chemotherapy treatment. The study was published today in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented this weekend at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
The study found that 70 percent of women with early stage breast cancers that are HER2 negative and are sensitive to estrogen, may be able to forgo chemotherapy and its toxic side effects. By using individuals’ Oncotype DX Genomic testing score, researchers found some patients need take only hormone therapy, drugs that block the hormone estrogen or stops the body from making it. This statement can be attributed to Victoria Wolodzko, Komen’s Senior Vice President of Mission.
“Susan G. Komen has been concerned for years about the toxic side effects of chemotherapy, because while it can save lives, it also can potentially cause heart and nerve damage, and also leave patients vulnerable to infection and increase the risk of leukemia later in life. This is why we have funded a body of research that seeks to more precisely treat breast cancers and potentially avoid chemotherapy. This study, which was supported in part by Komen funding, suggests that we have the potential to use Genomic testing to tell some women more precisely whether they would benefit from chemotherapy or not.”According to the researchers, the study definitively identifies the 70% of women with early-stage, hormone-receptor positive, HER-2 negative, node-negative breast cancer who do not benefit from chemotherapy and the 30% of those women for whom chemotherapy can be lifesaving. For all women who fall in the mid-range of Oncotype Dx test scores regardless of age, there was a clear and large chemotherapy benefit. In women younger than 50, those with lower scores showed modest (2%) chemotherapy benefit, which gradually grew as scores increased. This important finding reveals how Oncotype DX testing can lead to a new level of precision treatment. The TAILORx trial was independently designed and conducted by ECOG-ACRIN under the sponsorship of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and was the largest adjuvant breast cancer treatment trial ever conducted. It enrolled 10,273 women with early-stage breast cancer across approximately 1,200 sites in the United States and 5 additional countries. Komen funded Dr. Joseph A. Sparano of Montefiore Medical Center in New York, the leader of the study, to create a biospecimen bank focused on defining tumor and host factors contributing to recurrence of breast cancer occurring more than five years after diagnosis.Komen has invested more than $266 million in over 590 research grants and nearly 100 clinical trials focused on precision medicine.

Stressful jobs are associated with a higher risk of heart rhythm disorders

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 giugno 2018

Sophia Antipolis, 04 June 2018: Having a stressful job is associated with a higher risk of a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation, according to research published today in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a European Society of Cardiology (ESC) journal. The most stressful jobs are psychologically demanding but give employees little control over the work situation – for example, assembly line workers, bus drivers, secretaries, and nurses. The study found that being stressed at work was associated with a 48% higher risk of atrial fibrillation, after adjustment for age, sex, and education. Dr Eleonor Fransson, study author and associate professor of epidemiology, School of Health and Welfare, Jönköping University, Sweden, said: “We need people to do these jobs but employers can help by making sure staff have the resources required to complete the assigned tasks. Bosses should schedule breaks and listen to employees’ ideas on how the work itself and the work environment can be improved.” Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia). Symptoms include palpitations, weakness, fatigue, feeling light headed, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
Atrial fibrillation causes 20–30% of all strokes and increases the risk of dying prematurely.2 One in four middle-aged adults in Europe and the US will develop atrial fibrillation. It is estimated that by 2030 there will be 14–17 million patients with atrial fibrillation in the European Union, with 120,000–215,000 new diagnoses each year.Dr Fransson said: “Atrial fibrillation is a common condition with serious consequences and therefore it is of major public health importance to find ways of preventing it. Little is known about risk factors for the disease and especially the role of the work environment.”This study assessed the link between work stress and atrial fibrillation. The study included 13,200 participants enrolled into the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH) in 2006, 2008, or 2010. Participants were employed and had no history of atrial fibrillation, heart attack, or heart failure. At study inclusion, participants completed postal surveys on sociodemographics, lifestyle, health, and work-related factors.Work stress was defined as job strain, which refers to jobs with high psychological demands combined with low control over the work situation. The survey included five questions on job demands and six on control – for example: Do you have to work very hard or very fast? Are there conflicting demands in your work? Do you have enough time to complete your work tasks? Does your work include a lot of repetition? Can you decide how and what to do at work? During a median follow-up of 5.7 years, 145 cases of atrial fibrillation were identified from national registers.
Dr Fransson said: “In the general working population in Sweden, employees with stressful jobs were almost 50% more likely to develop atrial fibrillation. The estimated risk remained even after we took into account other factors such as smoking, leisure time physical activity, body mass index, and hypertension.” The authors then pooled their results with two other studies on the same topic, and found that job strain was associated with a 37% increased risk of atrial fibrillation. “Across studies there was a consistent pattern of work stress being a risk factor for atrial fibrillation,” said Dr Fransson. She concluded: “Work stress has previously been linked with coronary heart disease. Work stress should be considered a modifiable risk factor for preventing atrial fibrillation and coronary heart disease. People who feel stressed at work and have palpitations or other symptoms of atrial fibrillation should see their doctor and speak to their employer about improving the situation at work.” European guidelines on the prevention of cardiovascular disease state that stress at work contributes to the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and having a worse prognosis.3 Assessment of psychosocial risk factors is recommended in people who have, or are at risk of developing, cardiovascular disease.

Dendreon Publishes New Data in Clinical Cancer Research

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 giugno 2018

Dendreon Pharmaceuticals LLC, a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company and pioneer in the development of immunotherapy, today announced publication of new data in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, showing that treatment with PROVENGE® (sipuleucel-T) generates killer T cells that target prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), a protein expressed on the majority of prostate cancer cells. The results of this analysis provide further evidence around the relationship between killer T cell activity and overall survival in men with asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).“This research suggests the role of sipuleucel-T in the generation of killer T cells following treatment,” said Charles G. Drake, M.D., Ph.D., director of genitourinary oncology at Columbia University Medical Center and senior author. “Importantly, these data suggest how the mechanism of action of sipuleucel-T may, in part, translate into survival benefit for patients.”To quantify potential cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activity, cell-surface CD107a expression on PAP-specific CD8+ T cells was measured in samples from a subset of patients enrolled in Dendreon’s STAMP clinical trial (study ID: P11-3) before and after sipuleucel-T treatment. It was observed that T cells were able to recognize and target PAP only after sipuleucel-T treatment, with responses observed at 6 weeks and sustained out to 26 weeks post-treatment. Importantly, the magnitude of the CTL activity at week 26 correlated with increased overall survival, indicating that PROVENGE evokes a memory T cell response that may play a role in the survival benefit of PROVENGE.“While the IMPACT trial established the survival benefit of sipuleucel-T, the mechanism of action of treatment has not been fully appreciated,” said Bruce A. Brown, M.D., senior vice president, medical, at Dendreon. “This research provides more information about how sipuleucel-T works and – for the first time – correlates the magnitude of killer T cell activity with overall survival.”

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 giugno 2018
