Inauguration of the Licentiate in Safeguarding

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 9 ottobre 2018

Rome. Piazza della Pilotta 4. The Centre for Child Protection has inaugurated the first interdisciplinary Master’s degree program in Safeguarding, focused on the global fight against child abuse. The CCP, part of the Pontifical Gregorian University, invites students from all around the world who plan to work in the field of safeguarding to apply for the Master’s or Licentiate (ecclesiastical degree) program. The two-year, full-time, interdisciplinary course offers four different specializations: theology (formation to priestly/religious life), canon law, education, and psychology/psychotherapy. This year, students from seven countries and four continents (Kenia, Nigeria, Croatia, Spain, Slovakia, Myanmar, Tonga) will be the firsts. “The Licentiate will have a high practical relevance,” Father Hans Zollner, SJ, president of CCP, and Academic Vice Rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University, explained at the opening ceremony. “Students are invited to integrate multidisciplinary theory into their practice, as well as constantly challenged to apply what they have learned to their own cultural backgrounds and situations. Everything that I’ve heard from all corners of the world, indicates that there is great interest in such a program.” Given the extent and the severity of child abuse around the world, a more elaborated education of experts for child protection is urgently needed. The Licentiate builds on the already established Diploma in Safeguarding of Children that was established at CCP in 2016. Reinhard Cardinal Marx, Archbishop of Munich and supporter of the CCP since its establishment in 2012, celebrated Mass at the opening event. “The abuse scandals that have plunged the church into one of its most serious crises worldwide raise many questions and challenges for the future. This is challenging, exhausting, but at the same time without alternative. We must help together to promote a variety of constructive initiatives and create synergies,” Cardinal Marx said at the opening ceremony. “With this in mind, I can already promise for myself personally, but also for the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, that we will continue to support the CCP and provide financial support,” Cardinal Marx said.
The current global debate on child abuse by representatives of ecclesiastical institutions shows how important it is to train those who have an influence on the procedures in institutions and can proactively protect potential victims. Since its foundation, the CCP has made an important contribution to this purpose. The Child Dignity in the Digital World Congress in October 2017 impressively demonstrated that interdisciplinary and international cooperation is needed to fight child abuse.
