Teacher Training Must Change to Keep Up with the Emerging Ecosystem of Education

The world is in a constant state of evolution and change, and this is having a big impact on learning and professional development for teachers. According to Professor Larry V. Hedges, Yidan Prize for Education Research Laureate 2018, teacher training must evolve as well. In a new interview with C.M. Rubin, founder of CMRubinWorld, Hedges explains that in the past, teaching practice was determined “by initial training in universities and teacher training colleges, apprenticeship, and experience,” but moving forward, teaching professionals will need to function like the medical professionals do today. He notes “doctors have wide autonomy, but their practice is informed by a constantly advancing medical science.” He says that teachers must learn to function as professionals “who believe that research can improve practice and that sometimes large scale research is the only way to know what works.” Education research has become a critical part of ensuring nations have an educated workforce to meet economic progress. Hedges believes better research will dramatically improve education outcomes over the next half century similar to the advances made in healthcare in the 20th century. He predicts that in 50 years, we will live in a world where “every student will perform as well as the very best students do today.”
Professor Larry V. Hedges is the Yidan Prize for Education Research Laureate 2018. He is the Chairman of the Department of Statistics, Northwestern University.
