Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 29 maggio 2019

Digiuno controllato per ridurre i rischi legati all’invecchiamento

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 29 maggio 2019

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 29 maggio 2019

Black Sea ministers endorse Common Maritime Agenda

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 29 maggio 2019

Ministers from seven Black Sea countries – Bulgaria, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine – are meeting in Bucharest today to endorse the Common Maritime Agenda for the Black Sea. With this, the Black Sea region joins the rest of the sea basins bordering the EU in setting a basin-wide initiative for more, and more sustainable, economic growth.
The Common Maritime Agenda – the first of its kind in the region – is the result of a process initiated and backed by the European Commission. Between 2015 and 2018 alone, the European Union has supported the region’s blue economy, which represents all economic activities related to our oceans, seas or coastal areas, with more than 13 million euros.
Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, said: “Today the Black Sea region has taken a step towards a new type of sea basin strategy – one based on workable cross-border projects. This will push the region’s blue economy forward sustainably. The countries that share the shores of the Black Sea can make this a success and the European Commission will continue to offer its full support”. Black Sea countries will pursue three goals: healthy marine and coastal ecosystems; a competitive, innovative and sustainable blue economy; and fostering investment in the blue economy.

Marine Genetic Resources: Bridging policy, law, science and research and development

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 29 maggio 2019

Over 65% of the biomass in the ocean is made of plankton. Marine microbes bring services to our ecosystem and their genetic diversity is remarkable. Moreover, marine genetic resources (MGR) have enormous potential in fields such as pharmaceutical, bioremediation, cosmetics, nutraceutical, or biomedical innovation.
MGR in areas beyond national jurisdiction are not regulated. Therefore, the European Commission organised an international workshop on “Marine genetic Resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction: bridging policy, law, science and research and development” on the 21st and 22nd of May in Brussels.Negotiators of the international treaty on marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), top scientists, legal experts and representatives from the private sector and the civil society came together to better understand the scientific process related to the discovery, analysis and use of marine genetic resources (MGR) from areas beyond national jurisdiction, the high seas and the Area. In total, 90 participants from 32 countries. The workshop was an opportunity to bridge the world of the policy makers with the scientific community, legal experts and the private sector, for a better understanding of the scientific process related to the discovery, analysis and use of marine genetic resources (MGR) from areas beyond national jurisdiction, the high seas and its seabed.Participants had the opportunity to discuss important technical aspects related to: the sampling of MGR; their scientific analysis; their storing in collection; the transformation of samples into digital scientific information; examples of applied research; Legal issues , such as intellectual property rights (IPRs) were also high on the agenda.Molecular biologists described how DNA is extracted and transformed into digital data, which then needs to be curated before being analysed. The scientific community stressed the importance of having open access to data, as this is the foundation of scientific investigation. Oceanographers gave an overview of the technologies employed for sampling the deep sea and explained how difficult and costly it is to organise cruises in the high seas. International cooperation is therefore essential and there are plenty of good examples to follow. BBNJ negotiations is a political priority for the European Union. João AGUIAR MACHADO, Director General of DG MARE, stressed the importance in engaging with the scientific community and the private sector, with the support of the civil society organizations, in the ongoing negotiations.
The President of the BBNJ intergovernmental conference (IGC) at the UN, Rena Lee, underlined the need to base the negotiations on solid scientific knowledge and to look for practical solutions, through a pragmatic approach.

European Commission launches Blue Economy Report at European Maritime Day in Lisbon

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 29 maggio 2019

Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella has opened the 2019 European Maritime Day conference in Lisbon. This year, the main focus is on boosting a “blue” economy, the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, through entrepreneurship, investment, and research and innovation. On this occasion, the European Commission launches the second edition of its Blue Economy Report.
Commissioner Vella said: “Coastal regions are home to 214 million people and generate 43% of EU GDP. Today’s report confirms the blue economy’s role as an exciting growth sector, with opportunities both in established sectors like tourism and shipbuilding, and in emerging areas like ocean energy or the blue bioeconomy. Yet we also know that blue economy start-ups and small companies often struggle to get their good ideas off the ground. That is why the European Commission is currently developing an investment-readiness support tool to help them mature and eventually access the funding they need to scale up.” Tibor Navracsics, Commissioner for Education, Youth, Culture and Sport, responsible for the Joint Research Centre, instrumental in drafting the Blue Economy Report added: “Though our oceans cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface, we know less about what lies beneath the waves than we do about faraway planets. This prevents us from making the most of our resources while protecting marine ecosystems. The second Report on the European Blue Economy aims to change that. It reflects the importance that the European Commission attaches to a robust, evidence-based approach. Our oceans and seas can help us in tackling the challenges facing humanity; creating prosperity without endangering that of future generations.”Using the opportunities of the oceans sustainably was also at the heart of Commissioner Vella’s speech at today’s international ministerial conference on smart ocean governance, organised by Portugal. He reiterated the key role of oceans – in particular ocean energy – towards achieving a carbon-free Europe by 2050. This year’s blue economy report incorporates various new elements and content, including the maritime defence and the maritime equipment sectors. A preliminary analysis by sea basin has been added, as well as a number of in-depth case studies, e.g. on the economic impacts of marine protected areas or the contribution of the research and education sector to blue economy jobs. Finally, the second edition comprises a section on ecosystem services and natural capital, addressing the costs and economic impact of climate change and mitigation measures.

87th European Atherosclerosis Society Congress

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 29 maggio 2019

The Medicines Company (NASDAQ: MDCO) today announced presentation of analyses of two clinical studies of inclisiran at the 87th European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) Congress in Maastricht, Netherlands. A combined analysis (N=279) from the Phase 2 ORION-1 and Phase 1 ORION-7 trials, presented during an e-poster session, demonstrated that patients across a range of renal function levels achieved consistent reductions in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) with no dose adjustment necessary for patients with renal impairment. Results from the Phase 2 ORION-2 pilot study, presented as a late-breaking abstract, showed that inclisiran provided durable reductions in LDL-C levels up to day 180 in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH), a genetic disorder characterized by very high levels of LDL-C and early onset of cardiovascular disease, without the need to increase the dose of inclisiran.“The information discussed at EAS supports inclisiran’s potential to address the high burden of cardiovascular disease caused by cumulative exposure to elevated LDL-C,” said Peter Wijngaard, Ph.D., Chief Development Officer of The Medicines Company. “We are pleased with these findings that demonstrate inclisiran’s potent, durable and consistent lowering of LDL-C, as well as favorable tolerability and safety, in patients with renal insufficiency or HoFH.”Inclisiran, the first cholesterol-lowering therapy in the siRNA class, is The Medicines Company’s investigational therapy in Phase 3 clinical development to evaluate its ability to lower LDL-C through twice-a-year dosing. The company expects pivotal Phase 3 data readouts for inclisiran in the third quarter of 2019 followed by anticipated regulatory filings in the U.S. in the fourth quarter of 2019 and in Europe in the first quarter of 2020.“There remains significant unmet need in the treatment of ASCVD, as approximately four out of five statin-treated patients are not at LDL-C goals, with poor adherence to therapy a major underlying cause,” said Mark Timney, Chief Executive Officer of The Medicines Company. “We are excited at the prospect of bringing forward a revolutionary approach to treat cardiovascular disease using a twice-a-year therapy with unique potential to address the need for additional LDL-C lowering and long-standing medication adherence challenges faced by millions of people.”
