Road Trip: GEICO Says Make It Memorable and Make It Safe

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 23 luglio 2019

Millions of Americans will be putting millions of miles on their vehicles this summer as they head out for the annual adventure: the great American road trip. A lot of fond memories will be made as travelers visit national parks and seashores, adventure parks and family reunion sites. Before everyone hits the open road, GEICO encourages drivers to use this checklist to help stay safe during their travels: Check your tires: Make sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure. Recommended tire pressures are listed on the sidewall of the tire as well as the driver doorjamb of the vehicle. Also, inspect the tread on your tires to make sure it isn’t worn. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests flipping a penny over and placing it in the tread as a test. If you’re able to see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head on the penny, then your tire is getting bald and should be replaced.

Biotech Company Detraxi Is Developing a Solution to Eliminate Global Blood Shortages

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 23 luglio 2019

The demand for blood in China exceeds supply, with blood products only satisfying 50% of the total demand. According to The World Health Organisation, 0.92% of China’s population are donating blood, which falls below the rate of 1% to 3% that is needed to meet demand. The annual clinical blood demand growth rate is 10-15%.Blood collection doubled between 2011 and 2016 to 7000 tons. In 2018, 18.4 million units of blood were allocated across China. 15.8 million units were allocated locally within the same Province as collection. But managing blood supplies is hugely complex. Refrigerated blood only remains viable for between 35 and 42 days.Biotechnology is currently undergoing exponential technological progression and improving by a factor of 10 every year in terms cost-benefit. This is driving new biotech solutions that have not been available before. The global biotech market is expected to reach US$741.7 billion by 2026. Synthetic biotech is expected to exceed more than US$12.5 billion by 2024 with a CAGR of 20%, according to MarketWatch.
However, the development of new biotechnologies requires a very high appetite for risk and lots of patience. Detraxi is backed by London and Hong Kong-based technology billionaire Tej Kohli. Kohli believes that biotechnologies such as Detraxi will offer solutions to some of the world’s greatest public health challenges.

CVS-Aetna Merger: AHF Urges Court to Stop the ‘800-pound Gorilla’

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 23 luglio 2019

Friday, Judge Richard J. Leon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia heard closing arguments from attorneys for the parties and also from several friends of the court (amicus curiae) opposed to the nearly $70 billion acquisition of Aetna by CVS Health. While he did not issue a decision, Judge Leon stated his intent to issue that decision in the not-so-distant future, noting that the merger potentially has “grave consequences to millions of people.”Last month, amici witnesses from AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the American Medical Association (AMA), Consumer Action and U.S. PIRG testified about the negative impact the merger would have on pharmacies, health plans and patients. During closing argument Friday, AHF emphasized that the judge should not rubber stamp the merger, which the U.S. Department of Justice has already blessed subject to Aetna’s divestiture of its Medicare Part D plan. Rather, AHF urged, the judge has a duty to evaluate whether the proposed settlement makes a “mockery of judicial power” because the Department of Justice failed to consider numerous concerns and harms to the public interest that will flow from the merger. At the end of its oral argument, while AHF urged the court to reject the merger settlement, AHF also proposed a third path for the court – beyond mere approval or rejection of the proposed settlement. AHF proposed that the court consider conduct remedies; that is, remedies that would address the vertical integration concerns raised by AHF. These remedies include adding to any settlement:A provision requiring that all rival pharmacies have non-discriminatory access to CVS Caremark’s pharmacy networks at fair reimbursements that cover actual drug costs and dispensing costs.
A provision that managed care plans should not be denied access to CVS Pharmacy networks, and that managed care plans’ access should be at a fair price.A provision that all Aetna plan members must be allowed to opt out of any CVS/Caremark specialty or other mail order programs.

AHF Sounds Alarm Over Latest UNAIDS Data

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 23 luglio 2019

In light of a worrisome funding update and the recent release of the 2018 global HIV/AIDS statistics by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is sounding the alarm on the crisis by calling for increased data accuracy measures and an urgent recommitment to fully funding the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Two of the most critical assets in a robust HIV/AIDS response are data and funding—without either, the response will fall short of ending the epidemic and millions more people will continue to die from a disease that is treatable and preventable. Unfortunately, the recent revelation by UNAIDS of a $1 billion shortfall in global AIDS funding underscores the fragility of progress that has been achieved to date. The latest UNAIDS report puts the number of people on antiretroviral therapy at 23.3 million, with the range of uncertainty of +/- 3.8 million. The range of uncertainty for estimates of new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths is similarly large. Since countries voluntarily report HIV/AIDS data to UNAIDS, the uncertainty about the accuracy of this data is particularly acute in instances where it might reveal an unfavorable epidemiological picture, particularly in countries that do not extensively rely on donor funding for the AIDS response. As we are faced with daunting 2018 HIV/AIDS statistics and approach the next Global Fund Replenishment in October, AHF urges donors and government agencies to not be complacent by accepting the status quo—and to instead relentlessly push forward in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Resolute leadership coupled with adequate funding and accurate data will give the world a good chance to preserve current progress in the fight against AIDS and save more lives going forward.
