Bruxelles Tuesday 18 February, 18.30 – 20.00 CET The garage of the European Parliament’s SPINELLI building in Brussels. EP badge holders will meet at the SPINELLI building VoxBox area, 3rd floor at 18.00, and participants will be accompanied to the venue.
During white torture, an inmate is exposed to cold white light for 24 hours a day. There is no bloodshed, but the purpose is to destroy the victim’s mind. Sakharov Prize laureate Lorent Saleh was locked up for over two years in LaTumba, a prison run by the Venezuelan secret service in the country’s capital Caracas, five floors underground. The upcoming audio-visual theatre performance is based on poems written by Lorent Saleh when he was imprisoned. It will draw the viewer into the intimate soliloquy of a political prisoner in isolation, where he has to face his invisible torturers.
By bringing this theatre performance to Brussels, the European Parliament wants to put the spotlight on the fate of those unjustly imprisoned and inhumanely tortured around the world. The event is part of Parliament’s continuous support for the Sakharov Prize community of laureates – people who risk their own freedom to stand up for every person’s right to freedom.
