Chair’s statement: the situation in Libya

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 21 febbraio 2020

Statement by the Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries, Andrea Cozzolino, condemning the attack on Tripoli port.“The attack on Tripoli port on Tuesday 18 February, while negotiations to establish a permanent ceasefire were taking place in Geneva, is both worrying and disappointing. The situation on the ground is tense and must not be allowed to escalate. As Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Maghreb, I strongly stress the need that all parties, especially the Libyan National Army and its backers, hold the truce and engage constructively with each other and with the UN mediators to reach an effective ceasefire. The Libyan people deserve to live in a stable, peaceful and united country, which can only be achieved if all sides maintain their commitment to a political solution and return to the negotiating table.Commitments were taken to a permanent ceasefire. These commitments cannot be fulfilled while Tripoli is under attack. Now is the time to demonstrate the commitment to the Libyan people, by halting all military attacks and truly engaging with the UN-led talks. I reiterate the importance that all EU member states take decisive and united action to help restore peace in Libya.”
