Statement by European Parliament Vice-President Heidi Hautala following the suspension of Aung San Suu Kyi from the Sakharov Prize Community.“The European Parliament decided today to formally suspend Sakharov Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi from the Sakharov Prize Community. I strongly support this decision. The ‘Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought’ is awarded for outstanding achievements in the defence of human rights, safeguarding the rights of minorities and the respect for international law, among other criteria. In 1990, Ms Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Sakharov Prize for embodying the Burmese peoples’ fight for democracy. The decision excludes Ms Aung San Suu Kyi from all activities of the Community of Sakharov Prize laureates. The European Parliament has been following the situation of the Rohingya minority in Myanmar closely and has expressed on numerous occasions its deep concerns as regards the gravity and scale of human rights violations, which have been identified, amongst others, by the report of the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar.
While Ms Aung San Suu Kyi has been a symbol of freedom and democracy for many years, our institution has noted with concern that, in her function as State Counsellor and Foreign Minister of Myanmar, she has not made use of the positions she holds, to defend and safeguard the rights of the Rohingya people. To the contrary, she has made clear her support of the military that has led the assault against the Rohingya. The decision is a clear response to her lack of action, her aiding and enabling of the persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar and her denial of responsibility of her country’s government for the ongoing crimes against this community. She has ignored the European Parliament requests and has not lived up to the values for which the Sakharov Prize stands.”
