EU-China relations: MEPs will host China’s EU Ambassador Ming Zhang on Monday

Bruxelles. Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs will hold a debate with China’s EU Ambassador Ming Zhang on Monday, at 17.00 CET.The ongoing negotiations to conclude a long-standing investment deal between the EU and China, disinformation, the situation in Hong Kong, human rights, climate change and how to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic are expected to be some of the issues raised by MEPs in the upcoming discussions with China’s EU Ambassador Ming Zhang, who will be present at the committee meeting. The debate will kick off on Monday, 21 September, at 17.00 CET.
The debate comes after the virtual meeting that European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this week, on 14 September, which aimed to follow-up on the 22nd EU-China summit that took place on 22 June this year.
At that meeting, the leaders welcomed the progress on the ongoing negotiations for the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement (CAI), especially on the rules regulating the behaviour of state-owned-enterprises, on forced technology transfer and on transparency of subsidies. At the same time, the EU emphasised that more work was urgently needed on the issues of rebalancing market access and on sustainable development.
