Seville. Christie’s London – Announces the sale of a single-owner collection ‘A Townhouse in Seville’, comprising a selection of works from a beautiful property in the heart of Seville, Andalusia, southern Spain. The sale comprises 54 lots and represents a small part of a larger private collection, which was formed over the course of 40 years with a traditional, yet eclectic eye by its owners. Their own flair and iconic personal style is reflected in the fantastical, yet rich and elegant interiors which together they installed in this historic property. The works of art collected by these two connoisseurs are predominantly classical in flavour – the strong themes of Catholicism sat happily alongside Roman antiquities and paintings of mythological subjects – and in their choice of gilded finishes, rich furnishings and luxurious fabrics they paid homage to their Spanish heritage, all of which collectively reflects the deeply personal nature of their collection. Pilar González de Gregorio, Chairman, Christie’s Spain comments, ‘A Townhouse in Seville is the home of two born-and-bred Andalusians from Seville, who left for the big city at a very young age, where they would fulfil not only their dreams but those of many others. Together, they bore witness to the soul, the grace, the cheerfulness and the essence of the Andalusian women, the passionate celebration of ages-old traditions, the burst of spring, summer’s freedom, most secretive autumns and winters behind closed doors. The fields, the warmth of braziers, the magnificent countryside and the Easter pageants all served as inspiration in their creations and their collecting. Their identity is marked by an elegance with bold colour and big displays, fantasy and the enjoyment of works of art in legendary environments. The essence of Cervantes, a love for Venice and an everlasting popular craft with Arabic overtones. Essential Sevillians”. Amelia Walker, Director & Head of the Private & Iconic Collections, Christie’s London comments: ‘It is an honour to present works of art from this distinguished Spanish collection, which encompasses paintings, furniture, sculpture and objects spanning two millennia and originating from all over the world, reflecting the wide ranging and discerning taste of these two collectors. The interior photographs capture their brilliance in displaying so many diverse works of art together to form a unique series of unforgettable rooms in the magical heart of Seville’.
