Nasrin Sotoudeh: MEPs call on Iran to immediately release the Sakharov Prize laureate from prison

Members demand more effective campaigning by the EU to urgently address the release of Nasrin Sotoudeh and other arbitrarily detained human rights defenders with the Iranian authorities. On Wednesday, MEPs in the Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Delegation for relations with Iran debated the work and current situation of imprisoned Iranian human rights lawyer and 2012 Sakharov Prize laureate Nasrin Sotoudeh. They were joined by Mansoureh Shojaee, initiator of the so-called 1-million signatures campaign, American film director Jeff Kaufman, and film producer Marcia Ross. The debate focussed on the new documentary film ‘Nasrin’, directed by Mr Kaufman, which highlights the life and work of Ms Sotoudeh and was presented at the meeting.During the debate following the presentation of the film, most MEPs stressed that, despite having awarded Nasrin Sotoudeh the Sakharov Prize a few years ago, the EU and the European Parliament’s efforts to secure her release must be stepped up.They called for more collective and concrete EU engagement, in order to address the humanitarian situation of Ms Sotoudeh with the Iranian authorities.Members of Parliament also insisted that the EU must not tolerate the Iranian government’s show of force by persecuting Nasrin Sotoudeh and other human rights defenders in the country. They again demanded that these prisoners of conscience be released immediately.Mr Kaufman and Ms Ross also called on Members to exercise the same pressure on Iran as had been applied by the European Parliament to South African authorities during the apartheid regime, in particular as regards the case of Nelson Mandela, who was subsequently awarded the first Sakharov Prize in 1988 and released from prison in 1990.
