What we know—and do not know—about long covid

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 4 Maggio 2022

Welcome to our weekly newsletter highlighting the best of The Economist’s coverage of the pandemic and its effects. Scientists have learnt a lot about how covid-19 affects the body. But more than two years since the start of the pandemic, complications associated with “long covid” are far less understood. This week we explain what long covid is and why there is little consensus on how to treat it. Our data journalists have mapped out how the pandemic has changed where American homebuyers want to live. The data show people are flocking to warmer suburbs. The pandemic has created a fractious relationship between scientists and politicians in America. Edward Carr, our deputy editor, spoke with Dr Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser to Joe Biden. In the interview with The Economist, Dr Fauci discusses the death threats he received during the pandemic and his disagreements with Donald Trump. Our print edition this week focuses on China’s worsening outbreak. Tens of millions of Chinese are unable to leave their homes and Omicron has been spreading stealthily in Beijing for days. Those who test positive are taken to isolation centres, which is a particularly worrisome fate for Chinese pet-owners: in several cities animals have been bludgeoned to death by workers sent to disinfect homes. In a leader we explain why the martial rhetoric favoured by the country’s ruling elite will not help defeat covid. In the rest of the world, where the threat of covid is subsiding, there is growing interest in where unparalleled emergency-relief funds went. The rush to support households and firms led to poor procurement, messy programmes and inadequate oversight. In some countries it created a criminal’s paradise.
