What to read to understand Xi Jinping

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 5 ottobre 2022

In a couple of weeks Xi Jinping will be handed an unusual third five-year term running China’s communist party. In effect he is taking over as the country’s permanent leader. That’s not something to celebrate. Under the mysterious Mr Xi China has grown ever more authoritarian at home and assertive abroad. Yet few know much about him. We’ve just launched an eight-part podcast series that seeks to uncover the man and a new China newsletter, Drum Tower. The teams behind them, whose members pored over every book they could find about Mr Xi, have picked out five they’d recommend as the best introduction to him, as part of our “Economist reads” series. It’s a great starting point to understanding someone who is, arguably, now the most powerful man on Earth. I’d recommend some other delights from the series, including a piece on what to read to follow in the footsteps of brilliant travel writers (all of them women), one on the works of the prolific novelist Hilary Mantel, and another on the essential books to read to understand Italy. Happy reading. By Adam Roberts Digital editor The Economist
