US$1Million Al-Sumait Prize nomination cycle closes for African development in the field of health

The Al-Sumait Prize for African Development sponsored by the State of Kuwait, has concluded its nomination cycle of the 2021 Prize in the field of health.“This year the prize recognizes individuals and organisations that have a special focus on the mitigation of health crises such as Covid-19 and SARS. The current pandemic has shown us that health crises have a disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations, and so I’m hopeful that this years’ winner will be able to deliver new and innovative solutions to the increasingly complex problems facing the continent.” said Hassan Damluji – Board of Trustees representative for Bill Gates of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.The Board of Trustees, chaired by His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohamad Al-Sabah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the State of Kuwait, is composed of prominent, world-renowned and influential experts with extensive experience and knowledge in African development. The Board recently welcomed a new member, Mr Abdoulie Janneh, who is the Executive Director of the MO Ibrahim Foundation. Previously, Mr. Janneh served as the former Under Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Previous winners of the Al-Sumait Prize in the field of Health are Professor Kevin Marsh from University of Oxford and African Academy of Sciences, Kenya. For his sustained efforts to control and eradicate malaria, Professor Salim S. Abdool Karim, Director of the Centre for the AIDS Program of Research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Professor Sheila K. West, Vice Chair for Research at Wilmer Eye Institute from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and the Rakai Health Sciences Program.Al-Sumait Prize for African Development, which honors individuals and/or institutions who help advance economic and social development, human resources development and infrastructure in Africa, was established on the initiative of the late Amir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah. The Prize covers one of three categories each year: Health, Food Security, and Education, and is administered by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS). The Board is expected to confirm the winner of the 2021 Al-Sumait Prize in health by December of this year.

Al-Sumait PrizeKuwait City, Kuwait. Kuwait’s Al-Sumait Prize for African Development has announced an extension for nominations for its 2017 award for education to the end of July 2017. Applications for the prize need to be received by Al-Sumait’s Prize office no later than July 31, 2017.The aim of Al-Sumait’s Education Prize is to recognise pioneering contributions to education across Africa, said Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin “Al-Sumait’s 2017 Education Prize is open to individuals and organizations delivering pioneering contributions across the education spectrum in Africa,” said Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin, Director General of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), which administers the prestigious prize.Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin said the aim of the prize is to recognize efforts to improve access throughout the African continent to basic or advanced education, boost literacy and decrease dependence of children’s education on the socio-economic status of their parents.
Key conditions for the prize include being able to demonstrate research work or projects that are innovative and have achieved high-impact in line with the international standards established for the prize. The nomination form can be found at Dr. Shihan-Eldin said the one million dollar Al-Sumait’s Education award will build on the success of the recently awarded Al-Sumait 2015 Health and 2016 Food Security awards in creating a legacy of solid transformation in the lives of countless underprivileged individuals and societies. Al-Sumait’s education prize aims to recognise efforts to further educational development in Africa at all levels, from basic school through university and beyond.“The winners of Al-Sumait’s 2015 health and 2016 food security awards demonstrated initiatives of paramount importance in promoting significant economic, social, human resources and infrastructure development in the African continent. Al-Sumait’s education prize will be awarded to individuals or organizations delivering pioneering contributions in the field of education in Africa, encompassing both basic and applied educational systems as well as projects aimed at building a faculty of teachers and qualified trainers in applied and social fields and crafts.Dr Shin-Eldin“The Al-Sumait Prize for African Development is designed to help advance economic and social development, human resources development and infrastructure on the African continent,” said Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin, Director General of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), which administers the prestigious prize.Dr. Shihan-Eldin added that the education award, which is worth one million US dollars, will build on the success of the recently awarded Al-Sumait 2015 health and 2016 food security awards in creating a legacy of solid transformation in the lives of countless underprivileged individuals and societies.The recipients of Kuwait’s Al-Sumait Prize for African Development awards for the Health and Food Security categories received their awards at a special ceremony during the Fourth Africa-Arab Summit in Equatorial Guinea’s capital Malabo on November 22, 2016.
shihan-eldinHis Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah the Amir of Kuwait presented the 2015 Al-Sumait Health category award to Professor Kevin Marsh of the University of Oxford and African Academy of Sciences, Kenya, for his sustained efforts to control and eradicate malaria, which affects the health of tens of millions of African children.The 2016 Al-Sumait Food Security category award were handed over to representatives of the two winners, the Sweet Potato-for-Nutrition-Team at the International Potato Centre (CIP), Lima, Peru and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria.
“The winners of Al-Sumait’s health and food security awards set a high benchmark thanks to their unwavering commitment, ground-breaking applied research and field work to tackle and overcome the scourges of two major impediments to development in Africa, malaria and under-nourishment. Now it will shortly be the turn of educationalists to put forward their frontline approaches to furthering knowledge in Africa,” said Dr. Shihab-Eldin.
Kuwait’s Al-Sumait Prizes are a set of annual awards designed to honor significant advances in the fields of food security, health and education in Africa. Administered by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) and a Board of Trustees, the awards celebrate the work and accomplishments of Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwaiti physician who spent his lifetime helping the poor in Africa in the field of health and education. New White Paper on Food Security in Africa

white paperThis new White Paper from Al-Sumait Prize for African Development examines the complex food security challenges faced across Africa in order to encourage better understanding and solutions of the problem.It is the second in a series of White Papers produced in conjunction with Al-Sumait Prize, an annual award by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) for the advancement of economic, social, human resources, and infrastructure development in the African continent.Noting that Africa is the world’s second largest continent, home to nearly 1.2 billion men, women and children living in 53 countries, Al-Sumait Prize’s White Paper says millions still battle poverty, hunger, poor education and ill health. The solution, the White Paper highlights, lies in tackling core issues, from ageing demographics, skills development and global warming to enhancing agricultural productivity with efficient business models and addressing greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste.To help speed the drive to improve food security in Africa a powerful initiative conceived by the Amir of the State of Kuwait, H.H. Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has been launched – the Al-Sumait Prize for Food Security in Africa. Launched in December 2015, the Al-Sumait Prize will be awarded annually to the best international research or development initiative that is deemed to contribute significantly to solve major development challenges facing African nations, in particular the least developing countries in the fields of Food Security, Health and Education. The prize has been named after Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwaiti physician who devoted his life towards helping the poor in Africa.
