2018, a year of many achievements for the European Fisheries Control Agency

EFCA performed 26,922 coordinated inspections, a 28% increase compared to 2017. 714 suspected infringements, 15% less than in 2017, were detected, mostly concerning non-compliance with recording obligations and technical measures.At international level, EFCA has assisted the European Union in cooperating with developing countries and international fisheries organisations to help combat illegal fishing. In 2018, the five-year EU funded development project PESCAO kicked off, aiming to improve the fight against Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing in Western Africa, contributing to sustainable fisheries management and the reduction of food insecurity in the region. As part of this project, EFCA provides technical assistance to thirteen countries in the area.
Moreover, EFCA assisted the Commission in its cooperation with the Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (NAFO, NEAFC, ICCAT and GFCM), to strengthen the operational coordination and compliance. As stated in the MEDFISH4EVER Declaration, EFCA has continued to cooperate with third countries in the Mediterranean to promote an effective level playing field in the area.Providing trainings is an important part of EFCA’s work with 1,496 inspectors and experts from EU and third countries participating in training events and e-learning in 2018.To support the national authorities in their coast guard functions, EFCA hosted the first Annual European Coast Guard event in La Toja, Spain. The event brought together experts from other European agencies, such as EMSA and Frontex to identify ways to better cooperate and support Member States performing coast guard functions.

Founder of Ad Agency DASH TWO Gino Sesto’s Epic Marriage Proposal Works

Bettina Ho and Gino SestoLeave it to the founder of a digital and outdoor advertising agency to create an epic marriage proposal utilizing bus bench ad space in Los Angeles. Gino Sesto, entrepreneur and owner of Culver City’s DASH TWO, knew he had to pull out all the stops for his proposal to Bettina Ho; so he took out ad space on the bus benches outside of Bettina’s office in Los Angeles. According to Keith Thompson, Executive Vice President at Martin Outdoor, “This proposal exhibits the wonderful abilities we have with transit bench billboard advertising.” The seven-foot-long benches provided the extravagant space Gino needed to make this proposal unique. He chose a pair of benches directly in front of Bettina’s office at the Anti-Defamation League in Los Angeles.
Bettina went to work today at ADL, a civil rights non-profit with no inclination of what Gino had planned for her this afternoon. The proposal was quite fitting for the couple, considering how they met. Both Gino and Bettina were in the advertising business when they first crossed paths. She was in ad sales at AMC Networks, and Gino was running his company, DASH TWO.The couple had been dating for three years prior to their engagement. They are the parents to a French Bulldog named Lulu, who was the face of the innovative proposal. The first seven-by-two-foot bench, pictured below, featured Lulu in a party hat, with the words “Marry Me Bettina? – Gino” written across it. The second bench board gave Bettina the option to circle yes or no, although she didn’t actually need to as she happily said yes!Gino Sesto has owned and operated DASH TWO for nine years now. Engility to support Defense Intelligence Agency with digital forensics

(NYSE:EGL) won a $14 million contract with the Defense Intelligence Agency to provide in-depth multimedia analysis and reporting for intelligence community, defense, homeland security and law enforcement missions. Operated by DIA’s National Media Exploitation Center, the Audio-Video Forensics Laboratory program also requires Engility to operate and maintain a virtualized environment that supports more than 30 research and development projects at DIA.“The digital forensics field is growing and evolving,” said Engility CEO Lynn Dugle. “Our team is working with the DIA to introduce new technologies, tactics, techniques and procedures that allow our nation’s defenders to better anticipate and address threats.” The DIA’s National Media Exploitation Center draws insights from multimedia files extracted from digital devices, such as location data from a personal navigation system. In addition to media support, Engility’s virtualized IT infrastructure support will help the DIA’s R&D projects gain access to enterprise-level technology and the benefits of cloud solutions such as scalability and security.Engility first won this contract in 2011. The new award has a one-year base and four option years.

Foreign fighters: Civil Liberties Committee debate Wednesday on how to stop them

terrorismoForeign fighters will again top the agenda when the President of the EU judicial cooperation agency Eurojust presents its views on the phenomenon and the criminal justice response to it, before the Civil Liberties Committee on Wednesday at 11.30. On Thursday, MEPs will debate how to put a stop to foreign fighters in the context of legislative work under way to combat terrorism and step up checks at external borders.Lead MEP on the draft regulation to step up checks against databases at external borders Monica Macovei (ECR, RO) will present her draft report to the committee on Thursday at 9.30-10.00. The proposal suggests doing systematic checks on EU citizens at external borders and not only on third country nationals, as is the case today. On Thursday afternoon, MEPs will also go over amendments to the draft report on combatting terrorism, which proposes making it a criminal offence to prepare terrorist acts, for example by travelling for terrorist purposes (lead MEP Monika Hohlmeier, EPP, DE).

Debate on rise of anti-semitism, islamophobia and hate speech in Europe

On Wednesday evening they will ask Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová to explain what the Commission intends to do to fight hate crime and discrimination and whether it will ask EU member states to adopt specific national strategies to this end.Jewish people in Europe are increasingly afraid of being verbally harassed (46%) or physically attacked (33%), says a recent survey by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). One in three Muslim respondents to a 2009 survey reported that they had experienced discrimination in the previous 12 months. A public hearing on “Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and hate speech” was held by the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee on 29 June 2015.

Ground-breaking UK study points to future of water management worldwide

london-centralLondon: As World Water Week 2014 convenes in Stockholm today, the Environment Agency and the Water Footprint Network launched the results of a pioneering new study of water use in a densely populated region of the UK; the Hertfordshire and North London (HNL) Area . The findings of the study signal a breakthrough in water management that can be applied worldwide .The study, entitled ‘Water Footprint Assessment for the Hertfordshire and North London Area’, was initiated by the Environment Agency to improve their understanding of the problem of water scarcity and pollution. Availability and pollution of water resources has become a key concern for the Environment Agency, and for governments and businesses worldwide as population growth, changing lifestyle patterns, rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, as well as climate change, place unprecedented pressure on limited water supplies.“The Water Footprint Assessment brought new understanding of the local water resources under the existing regulations and could support joined water abstraction and water quality discharge consents. The results of this assessment can also be used for better communication of the issues of water scarcity and water pollution levels to water providers, water users and the public,” said Debbie Jones, Environment Manager (HNL East), Environment Agency.Integrating water scarcity and poor water quality through Water Footprint Assessment highlights the contribution of water management to these growing concerns.“By looking at water use in this specific area through the lens of a Water Footprint Assessment, we have unearthed an effective, new and innovative approach to tackling water problems that can be applied worldwide. We have a breakthrough on our hands that can revolutionise the way water is managed and regulated so that global demand is met in a sustainable way,” said Ruth Mathews, Executive Director, Water Footprint Network.The results reveal a more robust framework based on Water Footprint Assessment that could form the basis of future regulations.“We hope this inspires regulatory agencies worldwide to reconsider their approach to assessing how water uses contribute to the ever-increasing issue of water scarcity and recognize the value of regulations based on the grey water footprint in stemming the rapid decline in water quality faced in many river basins,” added Mathews.The Water Footprint Network is an international, non-profit foundation that promotes and inspires strategic action towards sustainable, efficient and equitable water use worldwide.

The first Annual Report

europeanCourtHumanOn July 29, the European Union borders Agency Frontex published the first Annual Report of the Frontex Consultative Forum on Fundamental Rights. The key task of the Consultative Forum, which FRA and the Jesuit Refugee Service Europe (JRS) have co-chaired since its inauguration in October 2012, is to provide advice to Frontex on fundamental rights issues. Core areas on which the Consultative Forum is consulted include the further development and implementation of Frontex’ Fundamental Rights Strategy and Code of Conduct.
Following its establishment, the Consultative Forum began by assessing which Frontex activities may give rise to major fundamental rights concerns, in cooperation with the Fundamental Rights Officer, Frontex staff and the Frontex Management Board. This resulted in a decision for the Consultative Forum to work on selected issues in the fields of strategic planning, joint operations, risk analysis and training.
The Annual Report provides an overview of the activities undertaken by the Consultative Forum in 2013 and contains the main recommendations made to Frontex and its Management Board, as well as the subsequent impact of these on the Agency’s work.

EU-MIDIS is the first ever EU-wide survey of immigrant and ethnic minority groups’ experiences of discrimination and victimisation in everyday life.Speakers: Morten Kjaerum, Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) Anastasia Crickley, Chairperson of the Management Board, FRA Jo Goodey, main researcher of the report will also be available to answer questions. (The press conference will be held in English) The survey interviewed 23,500 people from ethnic minority and immigrant groups in the EU about their experiences of discrimination. The survey covered four thematic areas: experiences of discrimination, experiences of criminal victimisation (including racially motivated crime), experiences of policing, and rights awareness. The survey also interviewed 5,000 people from the majority population in 10 Member States in order to compare the survey’s findings on experiences of police stops and border control.
