AHF to UN Chief: Do More to Protect Ebola Health Workers in the DRC!

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 16 dicembre 2019

Three months after a visit by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and other officials to the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), health workers continue to be attacked and killed despite promises by the UN chief to bolster security for response personnel. AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) urges Mr. Guterres to utilize the more than 15,000 peacekeeping troops at his disposal under the existing MONUSCO (UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC) mandate to protect the health workers who are risking their lives every day to stamp out Ebola in the world’s second worst outbreak in history.
Dr. Marie-Roseline Bélizaire, field coordinator for the World Health Organization (WHO) in the DRC, described harrowing accounts of her and her team coming under attack by armed rebels on November 28. Four Ebola responders were killed that night. Unfortunately, the UN peacekeepers did not react quickly enough, taking five to six hours to reach WHO staff—far too long when it is clear that response personnel in outbreak areas are under a constant threat of attack. Just last night, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) announced the evacuation of staff following a third attack on an Ebola health center.
WHO has reported 390 attacks on health facilities involved in the response in 2019 alone, with 11 health workers killed and 80 injured. Since the current outbreak began on August 1 of last year, more than 3,300 people have been infected with Ebola and more than 2,200 have lost their lives.

AHF Board Celebrates Successful Annual Retreat in Chicago

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 2 novembre 2019

The Board of Directors for AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest global AIDS organization, successfully concluded its annual retreat last week in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood for the $1.6 billion nonprofit organization, which currently cares for over 1.3 million people living with HIV or AIDS in 43 countries around the world. The AHF Board then also joined with senior AHF leadership, local and Illinois state elected officials and others to celebrate and cut the ribbon in Humboldt Park for a new, state-of-the-art facility and offices of CALOR, an affiliate of AHF and respected local Chicago nonprofit AIDS group that has been addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis facing the Latinx community in Chicago for nearly 30 years. The Board also toured AHF’s Chicago Out of the Closet store; another AHF affiliate organization, the South Side Help Center; as well as the Hyde Park AHF Healthcare Center. There are approximately 23,000 HIV cases in Chicago and the Latinx community accounts for 18% of those cases. While the incidence of new infections has dropped in the white community and is now flat in the African American community, the Latinx community is the only group in which the numbers of new infections is on the rise. The sixteen-member AHF Board, including three members from Africa as well as several Latinx members, represent nearly 300 years of combined volunteer service to the global AIDS organization.

AHF Sounds Alarm Over Latest UNAIDS Data

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 23 luglio 2019

In light of a worrisome funding update and the recent release of the 2018 global HIV/AIDS statistics by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is sounding the alarm on the crisis by calling for increased data accuracy measures and an urgent recommitment to fully funding the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Two of the most critical assets in a robust HIV/AIDS response are data and funding—without either, the response will fall short of ending the epidemic and millions more people will continue to die from a disease that is treatable and preventable. Unfortunately, the recent revelation by UNAIDS of a $1 billion shortfall in global AIDS funding underscores the fragility of progress that has been achieved to date. The latest UNAIDS report puts the number of people on antiretroviral therapy at 23.3 million, with the range of uncertainty of +/- 3.8 million. The range of uncertainty for estimates of new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths is similarly large. Since countries voluntarily report HIV/AIDS data to UNAIDS, the uncertainty about the accuracy of this data is particularly acute in instances where it might reveal an unfavorable epidemiological picture, particularly in countries that do not extensively rely on donor funding for the AIDS response. As we are faced with daunting 2018 HIV/AIDS statistics and approach the next Global Fund Replenishment in October, AHF urges donors and government agencies to not be complacent by accepting the status quo—and to instead relentlessly push forward in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Resolute leadership coupled with adequate funding and accurate data will give the world a good chance to preserve current progress in the fight against AIDS and save more lives going forward.

AHF Urges G20 to Prioritize Public Health; Fully Fund the Global Fund

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 21 aprile 2019

With the 2019 G20 summit coming up June 28-29, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is joining other civil society organizations (CSOs) at the Civil 20 (C20) Summit in Japan to support C20 efforts and to call on the G20 to honor its earlier commitment to fully fund the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (The Global Fund)—the world’s most effective mechanism for fighting our deadliest infectious diseases. No other global body has more power to positively affect development worldwide than the G20— since G20 countries account for almost 90% of global GDP, 80% of international trade, and nearly two-thirds of the world’s population.
In addition to building support for increased HIV/AIDS funding and resources, AHF will be supporting C20 efforts in Tokyo to raise awareness on key health initiatives, including the fight against tuberculosis and antimicrobial drug resistance, universal health coverage, quality standards of healthcare, and investment in medical research and development.
Even though the G20 was established to address economic issues, there is nothing more important to prosperous nations than the health of their citizens. The AIDS response and other key health concerns deserve the G20’s full attention—AHF urges world leaders to adopt and start to implement the proposals put forth by C20 summit advocates to ensure that people from all countries have the opportunity to be healthy and thrive.

AHF Cheers Victory on LGBTQ Rights in India!

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 13 settembre 2018

“Stigma and discrimination are a tremendous obstacle to healthcare access in India, particularly for men-who-have-sex-with-men and transgender people. As a physician specializing in HIV/AIDS, I know that the repeal of Section 377 will result in lives being saved because people who feel marginalized by the law will now be more empowered to seek the help they need,” said AHF India Cares Country Program Director Dr. V. Sam Prasad. “I feel proud that AHF and our partners had an opportunity to contribute our energy and efforts to this important victory. There is still much more work needed to overcome stigma, but this is a historic milestone for human rights in India.”“This is the most important victory for LGBTQ rights in many years,” said AHF President Michael Weinstein. “To have India – the largest democracy in the world – enshrine persecution in law was a terrible stain on its reputation. There is much cause for rejoicing in this decision and my sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to bringing about this momentous victory for human rights.”Currently, AHF provides antiretroviral treatment and services to 2,074 clients in India, including a large number of men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) and transgender people. For nearly 15 years, AHF India Cares has been at the forefront of successful advocacy efforts, which included the national adoption of a community-based rapid HIV testing model, launch of a first-ever “Condom Bank,” and participation in patent oppositions and drug pricings initiatives. To address stigma and help empower the LGBTQ community, in 2013 AHF launched Impulse India as a safe community space for MSM with a focus on sexual health and wellbeing.
