World Jewish Congress infuriated by sale of Nazi-era venom on Amazon

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 25 febbraio 2020

NEW YORK The World Jewish Congress is infuriated that Amazon is continuing to allow virulently hateful and inciteful material to be sold on its website, including a vile Nazi-era antisemitic children’s book depicting Jews in devilish form, published by Julius Streicher of the notorious Der Stürmer magazine, in 1938. In light of revelations that The Poisonous Mushroom is still readily available for sale on Amazon’s UK, US, and Germany platforms, WJC President Ronald S. Lauder is demanding that Amazon and its owner, Jeff Bezos, take immediate steps to remove this item and all other racist and xenophobic content from its website at once.“It is bewildering and frightening that in this digital age, in which we are more than well-aware of the dangers that can arise from the dissemination of hateful material online, Amazon would continue to allow the sale of an unquestionable piece of Nazi propaganda that brands Jews as no less than ‘poisonous mushrooms’,” Lauder said.“This book was written by one of the most despicable and loathsome exponents of Nazi antisemitic venom and was even used as evidence leading to his execution at the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. Streicher propagated an image of Jews as subhuman violent sexual abusers and enslavers, using his publications as a mouthpiece for blood libels and smear campaigns that shaped Nazi Germany and incited the near destruction of European Jewry. Streicher and his propaganda were so odious and vulgar that he was often shunned by other members of the Nazi Party, including defendants in Nuremberg when facing trial for crimes against humanity. How is it possible that Amazon has allowed such poisonous material to pass through its initial filters, posted online and accessible to anybody with a credit card, no matter their age or intention, at $0.99?” “While we appreciate the efforts that Amazon has made in the past to remove such offensive content, it is inconceivable that we should have to revisit this issue time and again, in order to ensure the safety and security of our communities from those who might well be inspired through these purchases to attack Jews and other minorities in the spirit of Nazi virulence,” Lauder added. “It cannot be left up to individuals or human rights organizations to repeatedly flag such content on Amazon’s behalf. A more sustainable mechanism must be put in place to keep these items from being posted at all.”“Three weeks ago, I stood on the grounds of Auschwitz-Birkenau with 200 survivors of the death camp who had returned on the 75th anniversary of its liberation to face the horrors that had stolen their youth, their innocence, and their families as a direct result of the hatred spewed in books like these. For the sake of all victims of the Holocaust, and out of simple moral corporate responsibility, it is imperative that Amazon fully joins us in our fight against antisemitism, rather than let it percolate on its platforms.”The World Jewish Congress (WJC) is the international organization representing Jewish communities in 100 countries to governments, parliaments and international organizations.

Connecting the Smart Home For the Holidays

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 22 dicembre 2019

Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant smart home devices have been a standout Christmas gift since the first Echo came to market in 2014. This year, reduced pricing and starter smart home bundles will again draw millions of dollars in consumer spending. But these devices also help determine the kind of smart homes that will be built around them. Global tech market advisory firm, ABI Research finds that holiday spending will help convert over 128 million additional homes into smart homes by the end of 2020 and the impact of those devices will go even further. The connectivity embedded in voice control front end devices will, for millions of homes, determine the connectivity they will look for in devices such as door locks, lights, sensors, key fobs, wireless security cameras, and more as they build out integrated smart home systems. For smart home device and service providers investing in embedding wireless connectivity in their offerings, the continuing competing and disparate landscape for smart home protocols remains an expensive and constricting block on smart home investment and ROI. “With no clear standard and no interoperability between major smart home protocols means that each new smart home is a battleground for each connectivity protocol to gain a foothold, and, each additional device added cements a foundation that will underpin the adoption of more and more devices leveraging the same connectivity protocol/s,” says Jonathan Collins, Smart Home Research Director at ABI Research.Bluetooth, Z-Wave, ZigBee, Thread, Propriety, and Wi-Fi all compete to deliver connectivity in a host of smart home devices – often side-by-side in the same device. Each has features and ecosystem drivers that can appeal to specific OEMs, systems providers, and consumers requirements. So far, Amazon supports the ZigBee in one of its Alexa offerings while Google Nest leverages its own Thread protocol to communicate within the home to sensors and other devices, but both also rely on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. For their primary functionality. However, in Asia, Bluetooth will increasingly provide connectivity from voice control front-end devices to an array of smart home sensors around the home, leveraging Bluetooth Mesh and fueling additional protocol complexity for an array of smart home sensors.
These findings are from ABI Research’s Smart Home Connectivity application analysis report. This report is part of the company’s Smart Home research service, which includes research, data, and ABI Insights. Based on extensive primary interviews, Application Analysis reports present in-depth analysis on key market trends and factors for a specific technology.

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 21 dicembre 2019

Formula 1 Works with AWS to Develop Next Generation Race Car

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 6 dicembre 2019

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ: AMZN), and Formula One Group (Formula 1) have completed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) project to simulate the aerodynamics of cars while racing, carrying out detailed simulations that have resulted in the car design for the 2021 racing season. The CFD project used over 1,150 compute cores to run detailed simulations comprising of over 550 million data points that model the impact of one car’s aerodynamic wake on another. Using the unmatched scalability of AWS, Formula 1 was able to reduce the average time to run simulations by 70 percent – from 60 hours down to 18. The project ran for six months using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) c5n instances and delivered performance equivalent to that of a supercomputer, for a small fraction of the cost.Increasing excitement for fans, by enabling closer, wheel-to-wheel, racing, was at the core of the project. For Formula 1 cars, the downforce generated by their aerodynamics is the single largest performance differentiator, helping a car travel faster through corners. The current generation of cars suffer a loss of downforce when they are running close to one another, reducing a drivers’ ability to sustain close racing and increasing the difficulty of overtaking. Currently, a car running one car length behind another loses up to 50 percent of its downforce. To reduce this downforce loss, F1 used AWS to look closely at how the aerodynamics of cars interact when racing in close proximity. These simulations looked at cars in common racing situations and the results have driven the changes to the proposed 2021 car design. With the insights gained from these simulations, Formula 1 has been able to design a car with only 15 percent downforce loss at the same, one car length distance. The resulting car will feature a brand new bodywork design with a new front wing shape, simplified suspension, new rear end layout, underfloor tunnels, wheel wake control devices, and will run on 18-inch wheels with low profile tyres for the first time.CFD simulates the impact of a liquid or gas on an object and requires extensive compute capacity to perform this kind of simulation, requiring high performance computing (HPC) clusters to do the job. However, running HPC clusters on-premises requires considerable upfront capital expenditure, lengthy procurement cycles, and regular hardware refreshes to avoid obsolescence. AWS provides the most elastic and scalable cloud infrastructure to run HPC applications. With virtually unlimited capacity, engineers and researchers can innovate beyond the limitations of on-premises HPC infrastructure. To complete the CFD work, Formula 1 used AWS ParallelCluster on Amazon EC2 to run the OpenFOAM CFD framework, and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for data storage. Leveraging the scalability of the cloud, Formula 1 was able to run CFD simulations on core counts much larger than they were previously able to execute. The increased speed with which the aerodynamics team could run detailed, two car turbulence simulations on AWS meant they could increase the number of car designs they could investigate from one to five per week. Moving forward, there are plans to expand the application further, up to 2,300 cores, and to introduce AWS Machine Learning (ML) tools, such as Amazon SageMaker, to allow ML technologies to help with the design and further optimize the performance of the car.

Amazon and Seattle Public Schools Team Up to Bring Computer Science and Robotics to 30 Title I Schools

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 27 giugno 2019

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Seattle Public Schools today announced a new partnership to bring computer science and robotics to up to 30 Title 1 Seattle Public Schools as part of the Amazon Future Engineer program. Amazon is providing each of the schools with an Amazon Future Engineer Robotics grant to inspire the next generation of computer scientists, with a focus on students from underrepresented and underserved communities. Each of the schools will receive support to launch FIRST robotics teams, including teacher professional development to learn about robotics, support from Amazon to expand access to computer science education in their school, and a private tour of an Amazon robotics fulfillment center in Kent, Washington. The mission of FIRST, curriculum provider for Amazon Future Engineer Robotics grants, is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills to students in grades K-12. Data from a 5-year longitudinal study of FIRST by Brandeis University shows competitive FIRST robotics programs works for all youth. Across all demographic groups (gender, race, economic status and geography), FIRST students show significant gains in STEM knowledge, STEM interest, STEM career interest, STEM identity, and STEM activity compared to their peers who don’t participate. FIRST students are more likely to major in tech-focused science fields in college; by their second year of college, over 50 percent declare majors in engineering or technology. The impact on young women in FIRST is particularly profound. By their first year of college, female alumnae of FIRST are 3.6 times more likely to take an engineering course, and 1.9 times more likely to take a computer science course than female comparison students.Seattle Public Schools is committed to creating opportunities for students who have historically been the furthest from educational justice; these students have also been underrepresented in STEM careers. They recognize the positive impact the partnership will have on educators, teachers and coaches to learn new skills and new ways of applying standards-based teaching in a new environment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by 2020 there will be 1.4 million computer-science-related jobs available and only 400,000 computer science graduates with the skills to apply for those jobs. Computer science is the fastest-growing profession within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) field, but only 8% of STEM graduates earn a computer science degree, with a tiny minority from underprivileged backgrounds. Students from underprivileged backgrounds are 8 to 10 times more likely to pursue college degrees in computer science if they have taken AP computer science in high school.More locally, the Washington Business Roundtable has reported that a large number of hundreds of thousands new jobs being generated in the Seattle area will be STEM-related. Moreover, the Puget Sound Business Journal stated in their January 6, 2016 edition that Washington isn’t producing enough qualified workers to supply talent-starved tech companies.Launched in November, 2018, Amazon Future Engineer is a four-part childhood-to-career program intended to inspire, educate, and prepare children and young adults from underrepresented and underserved communities to pursue careers in the fast-growing field of computer science. Each year, Amazon Future Engineer aims to inspire more than 10 million kids to explore computer science; provide over 100,000 young people in over 2,000 high schools access to Intro or AP Computer Science courses; award 100 students with four-year $10,000 scholarships, as well as offer guaranteed and paid Amazon internships to gain work experience. Amazon Future Engineer is part of Amazon’s $50 million investment in computer science/STEM education. In addition, Amazon Future Engineer has donated more than $10 million to organizations that promote computer science/STEM education across the country.

We’re excited to deliver our AWS Stockholm Region today to meet these customer requests.”The AWS Europe (Stockholm) Region offers three Availability Zones at launch. AWS Regions are comprised of Availability Zones, which are technology infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations with enough distance to significantly reduce the risk of a single event impacting business continuity, yet near enough to provide low latency for high availability applications. Each Availability Zone has independent power, cooling, and physical security and are connected via redundant, ultra-low-latency networks. AWS customers focused on high availability can design their applications to run in multiple Availability Zones to achieve even greater fault-tolerance. Additionally, local AWS customers with data residency requirements can now store their content in Sweden with the assurance that their content will not move without consent, while customers building applications that comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) now have access to another secure AWS infrastructure region in the European Union (EU) that meets the highest levels of security, compliance, and data protection.

Report “Synergies take center stage” di The Boston Consulting Group

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 10 novembre 2018

Walmart e Amazon.

Enerray delivers 964kWp solar rooftop to global US e-commerce giant Amazon

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 10 gennaio 2018

bolognaBologna. Global turnkey solar developer and O&M provider Enerray has designed and installed a 965 kWp rooftop PV system to the global e-commerce giant, at its new logistics center in Passo Corese, central Italy. The clean electricity produced at the site will be used to power the facility’s operations, delivering an impressive annual rate of return over 20 years of 11.4%.
Enerray has completed a photovoltaic (PV) system on the rooftop of a logistics center operated by the US-headquartered global e-commerce giant, located in Passo Corese, in Italy’s Rieti province.
The PV system has a capacity of 964 kWp. It utilizes 3,200 monocrystalline solar modules. All the energy produced by the solar array will be consumed onsite, delivering a return on investment in only 5.5 years. The global e-commerce giant, chose Rieti province to build the new logistic center to supply customers in southern and central Italy. The next-generation multilevel structure is well suited to PV deployment, allowing for high levels of self-consumption of electricity produced by a solar array during daylight hours.Engineering 2K was selected as general contractor on the logistics center construction project. Engineering 2K then chose Enerray to develop the major photovoltaic system on rooftop, based on Enerray’s expertise in commercial and industrial (C&I) solar projects, and the high level of innovation displayed by the company’s experienced solar team.“It’s an important acknowledgment of Italian professionalism and of our company in the PV sector – said Michele Scandellari, CEO of Seci Energia holding, Enerray’s parent company. “The logistics center located in Rieti province is the result of massive investments in innovation and technology made by this global e-commerce giant, and we are so proud to be seen as the Italian company up to this challenging task”.The new logistic center in Rieti province covers 160,000 square meters, 8,500 square meters of which is dedicated to offices. The rooftop photovoltaic system covers a 5,230 square meters area.
The financial returns on the PV project are particularly impressive, indicating the strong outlook for C&I solar installations in Italy in the future. The PV plant should generate an annual return rate, after 20 years, equal to 11.4%, for a discounted net value of over €8.3 million.
Enerray was founded in 2007 and headquartered in Bologna. With a full focus in photovoltaics, since 2011 the Company launched a very important internationalization process, undertaken thanks to its worldwide approach and by establishing 11 foreign branches. To date Enerray has created more than 240 photovoltaic systems, including 500 MWp installed and other 350 under construction, among which 400 MWp under direct management, allowing a reduction in CO2 of more than 350 tons per year. http://www.enerray.com
