Abizaid Steps Down from RPM Board Following Confirmation as U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

RPM International Inc. (NYSE: RPM) today announced that retired U.S. Army Gen. John P. Abizaid has stepped down from his position on the RPM board of directors following his confirmation this week as the U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia. “Obviously, John’s new role as ambassador is of significant national and international importance and will require 100 percent of his focus, which necessitated that he resign from our board. During his time as a director, he brought a unique perspective to RPM, particularly in the areas of strategy, operations, international affairs and leadership development,” stated Frank C. Sullivan, chairman and CEO of RPM. “We’re grateful to have benefitted from John’s tremendous expertise and sage counsel during his decade of service to RPM and wish him success in his new role.” Abizaid was elected to the RPM board of directors in 2008 after a distinguished military career during which he rose from an infantry platoon leader to become a four-star general and the longest-serving commander of U.S. Central Command. The highly decorated officer led assignments ranging from infantry combat to delicate international negotiations. After retiring from the U.S. Army in 2007, he served as senior partner of JPA Partners LLC, a Nevada-based strategic and analytic consulting firm.

Diplomatic Council Founding President Ambassador Buddhi K. Athauda Elected New Chairman of the Hague Conference On Private International Law

Buddhi K. AthaudaThe Hague, Netherlands, September 23rd, 2014 – The Founding President of the Diplomatic Council, H.E. Ambassador Buddhi K. Athauda, has been elected as Chairman of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH for Hague Conférence de La Haye). He was nominated by Mr. Christophe Bernasconi, Secretary General of The Permanent Bureau of the Hague Conference on Private International Law, to Chair the newly formed administrative council, with the goal of formulating a modern financial management framework for the Organization. Mr. Athauda was elected unanimously by member states as Chair of the newly formed Administrative Council.The HCCH was formed in 1893 to “work for the progressive unification of the rules of private international law”. It has pursued this goal by creating and assisting in the implementation of multilateral conventionsAmbassador Buddhi K. Athauda,, which promote the harmonization of conflicting laws and principles, ranging in diverse subject matter within the scope of private international law.The Conference has developed 38 international conventions since its Statute was completed in 1951. A significant number of these Conventions is currently in force and mostly focus on conflict of law rules, administrative cooperation, jurisdiction and applicable law (e.g. on the law applicable to maintenance obligations, accidents in road traffic, the liability products, child adoption, matrimonial or inheritance). HCCH Conventions and instruments are open for adoption or ratification by non-members of the HCCH. Today 140 countries are party to the Hague Conventions.During his tenure in The Hague, H.E. Buddhi K. Athauda, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to The Netherlands and Founding President of the Diplomatic Council, was also unanimously elected as Chair of three prestigious global organizations based in The Hague, all of which are represented by more than 100 member states from around the world.In 2013, Mr. Athauda was chosen to lead as Chair of the Budget Committee of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), a world-class global institution established in 1907 to facilitate arbitration and other dispute resolutions between international states. In the same year, the Ambassador was elected as Chairperson for the year 2014 for the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), an organization established in 1989 under the United Nations umbrella, which supports commodity-based economies with elaborate funding and innovative assistance towards the over-arching goal of poverty reduction. Finally, as the elected Vice-Chair, at the 18th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) – the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates for 2014.

Lamia Mekhemar Ambassador of Republic of Egypt to the Holy See. Prof. Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im, born in 1946 in Sudan, is a renown scholar of Islam and Human Rights. He has published numerous books, including Islam and the Secular State: Negotiating the Future of Shari’a (2008), African Constitutionalism and the Role of Islam (2006), Toward an Islamic Reformation: Civil Lberties, Human Rights and International Law (1990). Prof. An-Na‛im sees the ongoing events in the Arab World as an opportunity for Islam to bring about political, economic and social transformations in countries such as, for example, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. In his view, “external actors can support liberation struggles, but should not attempt to displace or impose on the independent agency of native actors”, who will need to implement their own strategies to protect women rights, freedom of religion and free-speech. World Health Organization for cancer control

Geneva  World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Dr. Margaret Chan has appointed Ambassador Nancy Goodman Brinker, Founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, a breast cancer foundation, as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control As Goodwill Ambassador, Ambassador Brinker is expected to raise awareness about cancer as a global public health problem. She will also advocate for strengthening global action for cancer prevention and control in the context of the Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases endorsed by the World Health Assembly in May 2008. Her messages will emphasize the need for low- and middle income countries to strengthen comprehensive and evidence-based cancer control policies and programmes.   “I am very pleased to appoint Ambassador Nancy Brinker as a Goodwill Ambassador for WHO,” said WHO Director-General Margaret Chan. “I look forward to Ambassador Brinker’s help in raising global awareness of the need for comprehensive cancer control policies. The disease burden has shifted from wealthier to less affluent countries, and her advocacy will help in building awareness in low- and middle-income countries. Ambassador Brinker served as United States Ambassador to Hungary from 2001 to 2003 and as U.S. Chief of Protocol from 2007 to 2009.  During her career as a businesswoman, consultant, health care advocate and philanthropist, she has received many awards.   Ambassador Brinker has served on various boards, including Harvard University’s School of Public Health and was appointed by President Reagan to serve on the National Cancer Advisory Board at the National Cancer Institute. With former First Lady Laura Bush, Ambassador Brinker helped launch the U.S.-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research in the areas of awareness-building, grassroots advocacy support, research, training, community outreach, and women’s empowerment. On her appointment as WHO Goodwill Ambassador, Ambassador Brinker said: “I would like to thank the WHO for this great honor and opportunity. If we raise awareness about the global burden of cancer, its socioeconomic and psychological consequences on cancer patients and their families and the necessary actions for its control, we will be able to advance the global agenda in the fight against cancer. I will work diligently to effectively disseminate these messages to the world.”

President’s meeting with Ambassador Chris Hill

The White House. Earlier this week, Ambassador Hill was confirmed by the Senate to serve as our Ambassador to Iraq.  Ambassador Hill will head to Iraq this week, and the President wanted to speak with him before he leaves for his important new post. They discussed the current situation in Iraq and the need to make political progress.
