Friend of the Earth Petition Contributes to China’s Decision to Ban Trade and Consumption in Wild Animals

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 1 marzo 2020

A petition launched by Friend of the Earth was an influential factor in the February 24 decision by the government of China to enact a permanent ban on the trade and consumption of wild animals. The ban is a response to the Coronavirus outbreak, which is thought to have originated from contact between humans and species, possibly pangolins, sold in China’s wild animals markets. Friend of the Earth is the preeminent worldwide certification of products from sustainable agriculture and farming, also carrying out conservation projects and campaigns.“We applaud this decision,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Earth. “It was the right thing to do and it will have a positive impact, not only on China’s people and global safety, but also on the survival of endangered species worldwide. We are pleased and honored that our efforts had an influence on the decision-making process.”The NGO had sent the thousands of signatures it collected to the Chinese government with the suggestion that they become the world’s new wildlife conservation leader. The Guardian reported that the ban is shutting down nearly 20,000 wildlife farms in China. These farms had been raising species like peacocks, civet cats, porcupines, ostriches, wild geese and boars. The Coronavirus is a zoonotic disease, one that can be transmitted from animals to human. According to CNN, The National People’s Congress Standing Committee approved the ban as part of an effort to “safeguard public health and ecological security.” The ban will completely cease the “trade of wildlife” while also completely banning “the eating of wild animals.” The New York Times had previously reported that Pangolins had been the source of the virus outbreak.Friend of the Earth also petitioned China to stop trade in Pangolins and Dr Bray has been interviewed on the subject on BBC World Service Radio and Radio 4, Business Matters (min 18) https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w172wmxc4438gl4 China has been the world’s largest market for wildlife products—an estimated $20 billion global enterprise. This would make wild animal trade the fourth largest illegal business after drugs, human smuggling and illegal weapons trafficking.

Toulon Declaration: “Animals must be considered as non-human natural persons”

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 19 Maggio 2019

On Friday, 29 March 2019, scholars from the Faculty of Law provided a legal response to the Cambridge Declaration. The Toulon Declaration states that animals should be considered as “non-human natural persons” and not as things. The Cambridge Declaration, proclaimed on 7 July 2012, represented a historic turning point in the way animals are perceived. Well-known researchers from around the world, particularly for their skills in neuroscience, proclaimed at a symposium that animals also have the neurological substrates of consciousness.
In France, however, the status of animals has made little progress and the reforms do not take into sufficient account the advances made in research. Faced with this inaction, a team of scholars from the University of Toulon decided to react. On Friday 29 March, during a formal session marking the end of the second part of the trilogy of symposia on The Legal Personality of Animals, university scholars and researchers published the Toulon Declaration, aimed at giving animal rights both coherence and effectiveness. In particular, it states that “animals must be universally considered as non-human natural persons and not as things.”The idea that animals have a legal personality is thus crystallized in a text with a national and international vocation. By virtue of this Declaration, “specific rights will be granted to animals, allowing their interests to be taken into account.”The Toulon Declaration is the legal response that was lacking in the Cambridge Declaration. Wild Exaggeration

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 19 luglio 2009

galiaHaifa until 16/8/2009Haifa Museum of Art  26 Shabbetai Levi Street The Grotesque Body in Contemporary Art Curator: Tami Katz-Freiman  “Wild Exaggeration” is a group exhibition that includes works by Israeli and international artists whose art is characterized by a “grotesque” quality, and includes representations of the body that allude to this charged and multifaceted cultural term.  The term “grotesque” comes from the Italian grotta, or cave, and dates to 16th century archeological discoveries. Excavations made in Italy during this period unearthed ancient Roman wall paintings, which came to be known as grottescas, or grotesques. These fantasy-filled paintings were characterized by anatomical anomalies, small wild animals, human heads and vegetation and images of nymphs, satyrs and centaurs. The grotesque body subverts representational conventions concerning the human body, and questions clearcut definitions and boundaries. The exhibition includes works by Gili Avissar, Boyan, Zoya Cherkassky, Ofri Cnaani, Nathalie Djurberg, Ofir Dor, Oren Eliav, Roey Heifetz, Michal Helfman, Shay Id Alony, Sara Kahana, Yuri Kats, Meital Katz-Minerbo, Katarzyna Kozyra, Marik Lechner, Peter Jacob Maltz, Robert Melee, Assi Meshullam, Adi Nachshon, Gabby Nathan, Sasha Okun, Erwin Olaf, Ada Ovadia, Galia Pasternak, Uri Radovan, Netally Schlosser, Allison Schulnik, Heidi Stern, Anan Tzuckerman, Rakefet Viner Omer, Nadav Weissman, Michal Yaniv, Gil Yefman, Shira Zelwer, ZeroCents.
