12th anniversary of the Russian aggression against Georgia

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 18 agosto 2020

Statement by the Foreign Affairs Committee chair David McAllister, the chair of the Delegation for relations with the South Caucasus Marina Kaljurand and EP rapporteur on Georgia, Sven Mikser “Today marks the 12th anniversary of the Russian aggression against Georgia in August 2008. Its effects are still being felt – one-fifth of the territory of Georgia remains occupied, hundreds of thousands of people are still unable to return to their homes and face restrictions of their fundamental rights and freedoms. Georgia continues to be the target of various Russian hybrid activities, such as disinformation campaigns and cyber-attacks.Nevertheless, this shocking event only strengthened Georgia’s resolve to pursue Euro-Atlantic integration. Georgia has firmly established itself as a reliable ally and a key partner in the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood. Enhanced cooperation with the EU through the implementation of the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area as well as the visa-free travel has brought direct and tangible benefits and new opportunities to the Georgian people.Unfortunately, the inhabitants of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali/South Ossetia cannot benefit from the socio-economic development enjoyed by the rest of the country as both regions continue to suffer from the dire consequences of Russian occupation, despite the Georgian authorities’ readiness for dialogue, as illustrated by their ambitious “A Step to a Better Future” peace initiative. We reiterate our firm support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally-recognised borders and call for a peaceful resolution of the conflict by negotiations and diplomacy, including through the full implementation of the EU-mediated ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008 and the continuation of the Geneva International Discussions, the activities of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) and the efforts of the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia. As the country exercising de facto control over Abkhazia and Tskhinvali/South Ossetia, the Russian Federation must meet its international obligations and grant the EUMM unhindered access to the occupied regions, revert the rampant “borderisation” process, put an end to the systematic violations of human rights observed in these regions. It must also ensure the safe and dignified return of the internally-displaced persons to their native lands and see that the perpetrators of crimes committed on grounds of ethnicity are brought to justice.”

Statement by EP Conference of Presidents on the Schuman Declaration anniversary

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 12 maggio 2020

Statement by European Parliament’s President and leaders of political groups on the Schuman Declaration anniversary (9th May). The celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration comes at a moment when Europe is facing its most difficult challenge since the end of the Second World War: a health, economic and social crisis triggered by the outbreak of COVID-19.
The Schuman Declaration, which laid the foundations of our European Union, started a unique and genuine political project to guarantee peace and prosperity and to improve the lives of all European citizens. Already 70 years ago the Schuman Declaration contained the idea that “Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity.” This step-by-step approach led to the European Union we know today.
Since the very beginning, the European project has been about building a political and economic community, based on the values arising from our common European history, like solidarity, openness, freedom, tolerance, equality in diversity and respect for the rule of law.Jean Monnet, the author of the Schuman Declaration, declared that “people do not change if it is not out of necessity, and they only see the need in times of crisis”. Each crisis is an opportunity to take a step forward. Likewise, the current crisis heightens the urgency for the European Union to start to work on how to become more effective, democratic and closer to citizens.
Over the last 70 years the world has changed dramatically and the role of the European Union is more crucial than ever. In a new emerging geopolitical order and in the context of an ecological emergency, our responsibility is to accept to become a global force of stability and peace, rule of law, sustainability and multilateralism. This crisis has shown at a very high cost that the EU remains an unfinished project and that the failure to organize solidarity, or to counter the on-going attacks on fundamental rights and rule of Law are not theoretical debates.Because we stand on the shoulders of giants, the capacity of the European institutions and all Member States to respond to current health, social, economic, environmental, security and institutional challenges should be at least commensurate with the political ambition contained in the Schuman Declaration. We need to strengthen and deepen the democratic legitimacy of the European Union, and ensure its policies and leadership are the expression of the citizens of Europe in a fully-fledged European parliamentary democracy. We believe that it is time for an ambitious debate on the future of Europe with EU citizens and all stakeholders, in order to shape the Union in which we want to live together and to find an agreement among European citizens on the political foundations we want to build for the recovery of the European continent. Solidarity has become the main condition of our future common achievements.
In this context, we continue to believe that the planned European-wide project, the “Conference on the Future of Europe” is the appropriate forum to fulfil this ambition. The Conference needs to be convened as soon as possible and has to result in clear proposals by engaging directly and meaningfully with citizens, in order to bring about a profound reform of the Union, enabling it, above all, to take decisions in the common European interest so as to make the EU more effective, united, democratic, sovereign and resilient. We reaffirm Parliament’s position and take note of the Commission’s position that the Conference process, its concept, structure, timing and scope should be agreed upon jointly by the three institutions. Therefore, we call on the Council to come forward with an ambitious position concerning the Conference.Beyond the joy and gratitude at having been united and at peace for 75 years, we need to remember that solidarity does not end at our borders. The current pandemic reminds us of the importance of multilateralism in tackling common challenges and crises together. Instead of reverting to national egotism, a strengthened and more integrated European Union that collaborates closely with international partners in a spirit of mutual fairness and understanding should be the way forward.

On International Women’s Day

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 8 marzo 2020

The European Parliament celebrates the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA).
For this year’s International Women’s Day on 8 March, the European Parliament is marking the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration on gender equality. Twenty-five years after it was adopted, women’s rights and gender equality have not yet been realised. No country in the world has fully achieved equality and empowerment for women and girls. Women in Europe and around the world still face numerous challenges, some of which are newly emerging. As the European Parliament recently stressed in its latest resolution, MEPs reaffirm their unwavering commitment to the BPfA and to the full range of actions for gender equality outlined therein. We strongly believe that working to achieve women’s rights and gender equality demands a coordinated and multisector approach that involves all relevant stakeholders, including civil society and women’s organisations as well as the business world. The Parliament shall continue to fight for a strong leadership role in achieving girls’ and women’s rights and gender equality in the European Union as well as at a global level.
David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, said: “Altogether, we have to lead by example and join forces to achieve genuine gender equality. We must double our efforts to implement Agenda 2030 and all Sustainable Development Goals, to ensure that no woman or girl is subject to discrimination, violence or exclusion, and that all women and girls have access to health, food, education and job opportunities.Europe is at the crossroads of transitions: green, industrial and digital. We must lead the transition to a green economy for a healthy planet and a new digital world, while leaving no one behind. All women in the world need to be actors of change. Now it is time to move from words to deeds!”Evelyn Regner, Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality said: “Let us continue to raise our voices. Let us denounce injustice and fight for a better, more inclusive and fair world. On International Women’s Day, as well as on every other day of the year. Because, and it still needs to be stressed, women’s rights are fundamental human rights.” All for equality – 2020 is a pivotal year for Gender Equality.

Loncar China BioPharma ETF (CHNA) Celebrates One-Year Anniversary

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 18 agosto 2019

Biopharma is a focus of China as it seeks to shift its economy toward innovation and become a global leader in world-class science and medicine. China has a large pool of talent in life sciences, has harmonized its drug regulatory agency with international standards and is adding innovative drugs to its national reimbursement list at an expedited pace.
The CHNA ETF launched in an effort to get ahead of this trend and aims to help investors capture leaders in the space through the convenience of one security that trades in the United States. It is based on the Loncar China BioPharma Index, which was developed by biotechnology investor and Loncar Investments CEO Brad Loncar.“China’s future is rooted in innovation,” says Loncar. “We believe investing in medicine and the scientific revolution within China is a compelling way to harness and capitalize on China’s new and growing economy. The country’s commitment to life sciences and its ability to be a major player in the industry is of global significance and this has been reinforced by the progress seen over the last year.” A new rule implemented by the Hong Kong Stock Exchange allows pre-revenue biotech companies to list publicly for the first time. With this in mind, the CHNA ETF held its most recent semi-annual rebalance on Aug. 12 and added three companies that recently had initial public offerings in Hong Kong to the fund: CanSino Biologics (HKEX: 6185), Hansoh Pharmaceutical Group (HKEX: 3692) and Viva Biotech (HKEX: 1873). This now makes a total of six life sciences companies held by CHNA that are newly listed in Hong Kong over the last year. Digital Element, the Atlanta-based technology company that pioneered and revolutionized the geolocation and IP intelligence industry, is celebrating 20 years of successfully helping companies around the world more precisely target and reach online and mobile users in more meaningful, relevant and non-invasive ways.“When you consider that the majority of start-ups don’t make it past their fifth year and the average lifespan of an S&P 500 company is now less than 18 years, I feel very proud about the path we’ve chosen in terms of the evolution of our solutions,” said Rob Friedman, co-founder and executive vice president at Digital Element. “Our geolocation and IP intelligence solutions were engineered in Atlanta―before the city became a world-renowned technology hub. Our company was one of the few that came out of the dot-com bust relatively unscathed. Initially focused on solutions for online advertising, the company quickly brought to market data that enables much-needed applications for localized content, enhanced analytics, fraud detection and prevention, digital rights management, mobile-user targeting, and more. CNN Films and Miller also collaborated for the production of the documentary short, distributed by Great Big Story, THE LAST STEPS, about the final NASA lunar mission, Apollo 17.
‘APOLLO 11’ is a cinematic event that takes viewers on NASA’s historic mission led by astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, that first put men on the moon 50 years ago. In addition to the ‘APOLLO 11’ television premiere on June 23rd, the film will encore Saturday, June 29 and Saturday, July 20 at 9:00pm on CNN.
Samsung’s cross-platform campaign with CNN aligns the new era of 8K QLED picture quality together with the technical feat of the film’s extraordinary production. The creative will launch on the anniversary of the moon landing across CNN’s social handles.Additionally, Samsung will sponsor a three-part digital video series tied to the anniversary. This CNN editorial endeavor will spotlight a new generation of women leaders who are determining where the next great discoveries will be made, developing the groundbreaking technology to send humanity to the farthest reaches of the universe, and tapping a younger, more diverse recruiting pipeline that is opening doors for the next crop of dreamers.

75th Anniversary of D-Day with a Week of Powerful Programming Devoted to World War II

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 24 maggio 2019

The world was in its fifth year of war, when on June 6, 1944, western Allied forces crossed the English Channel and stormed the German defenses across the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy, France. Invading by land, sea and air, the broad attack was code named Operation Overlord, but the world knows it as D-Day, and it is said to be the beginning of the end of World War II. Ranking as the greatest amphibious landing in military history, the invasion allowed the Allies to advance into France. As a result, by August 1944, Western Europe was liberated from the Nazi German occupation, and World War II would be over the following year.
To mark the 75th anniversary of the pivotal battle at Normandy, National Geographic is celebrating with a week of powerful programming devoted to World War II. Beginning Monday, June 3, at 9/8c, the D-Day Marathon will feature premieres of original specials including Drain the Oceans: Secrets of D-Day, Hitler’s Last Stand: Lost Battalion, Eyewitness: D-Day and The King Who Fooled Hitler as well as encore presentations from National Geographic’s programming archives. In addition to providing unprecedented access to archival material, National Geographic’s original special The King Who Fooled Hitler presents never-before-seen documents, including secret letters from King George VI himself, correspondence and diary entries, along with new interviews giving fresh insight into the infamous D-Day deception that outsmarted Hitler.

Fraunhofer annual meeting and the organization’s anniversary year

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 10 maggio 2019

Throughout 2019, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is celebrating its 70th anniversary, as are the Federal Republic of Germany and its constitution, the Basic Law. Founded with the goal of rebuilding the local economy, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has a clear focus on new key technologies and markets, and is both Europe’s leading organization for applied research and the German economy’s innovation engine. At Fraunhofer’s annual meeting in its anniversary year, which included presentation of the Fraunhofer research prizes, some 700 guests from the worlds of politics, business and society gathered in Munich to focus on the technologies that will shape the future of German industry, and to honor the stellar achievements of outstanding scientists. Speakers included Germany’s chancellor, Dr. Angela Merkel, the mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, and the president of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Prof. Reimund Neugebauer.
“For 70 years now, Fraunhofer has been a mainstay of Germany’s science community, which is highly respected worldwide. Fraunhofer innovations drive the economy,” explained Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, president of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. “By our own understanding, we set the pace and drive technological progress. Our employees are entrepreneurs and visionaries – and the key to our success. After all, Fraunhofer researchers don’t just pose the right questions, they also find answers to them that are sustainable and add value. I am particularly pleased that, in our 70th anniversary year, the high quality of the submissions allows us to award not only the Fraunhofer Human-Centered Technology Prize, but as many as four Joseph von Fraunhofer Prizes.”
On March 26, 1949, State Secretary Hugo Geiger invited 210 scientists, entrepreneurs and members of society to the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. He aimed to help revive the economies of Bavaria and Germany by setting up the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. While children played amid the rubble, and the Wirtschaftswunder – Germany’s postwar economic miracle – was yet a distant prospect, the Munich office’s staff of just three people took up the challenge of advancing applied research in Germany. Electing Hermann von Siemens president in the mid-1950s and founding the first of its institutes, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft gradually evolved to become a mainstay of research in Germany. In the mid-1960s, Fraunhofer was officially designated the German science community’s umbrella organization for applied research. In the 1970s, the Fraunhofer model of performance-based funding sparked the dynamic success that shows no signs of slowing. Germany’s reunification presented unexpected opportunities to expand. Moving swiftly and resolutely, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft was quicker than other research organizations to seize the day, setting up more than 20 new institutes and facilities in the states that had newly joined the Federal Republic.
With 72 institutes and research facilities, more than 26,600 employees, an annual research budget of more than 2.5 billion euros and many international alliances, Fraunhofer is one of the most effective research organizations. Contract research accounts for more than two-thirds of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s budget; funding from federal and state governments for roughly a third. Building on these assets and its clear focus on new technologies and markets, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has become the German economy’s innovation engine. Its inventions range from airbags, white LEDs and dandelion rubber to mp3 technology.

New WWI Records for Armistice 100th Anniversary

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 13 novembre 2018

Allied soldiers celebrating Armistice Day or the official end of World War ISALT LAKE CITY, Utah (7 November 2018)– On Veterans Day 2018, the world will look back a century to the victory of Allied forces and the signing of the Armistice that marked the end of World War I. With that signing, on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” 1918, the world rejoiced. In memory of those who served, FamilySearch has added millions of new, free historical records to help families discover more about their WWI veteran ancestors. Search the WWI collections at FamilySearch.org. (Find and share this announcement in the FamilySearch Newsroom). In many allied nations, Armistice Day is a national holiday coinciding with Veterans Day and Remembrance Day to celebrate the endings of both World War I and World War II. In the warring nations of World War I, millions registered for war and millions served. Twenty-one million were wounded and 20 million died.As countries pause to remember, families seek to document their ancestors’ war-time stories. The stories from WWI are no longer first-person memories, but they do exist on documents, in pictures, and as memorabilia. The era’s records supply rich ancestral details including physical characteristics, vital information, service details and more.FamilySearch has a large, constantly expanding, free collection of World War I records to help remember World War I soldiers. Governments on both sides of the conflict, Allied nations (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Belgium, Serbia, and Italy) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire) created a treasure trove of documents useful to genealogists. Some records are unexpected today. For example, American women married to non-American men lost citizenship. Many created citizenship papers to be re-naturalized. Nearly everyone who had a male ancestor aged 21-30 that lived in the U.S. during WWI can find a record of that ancestor.Jennifer Davis, a family historian, found all four of her great-grandfathers in the WWI Draft Records online—even though none of them served active duty. “The only picture I have of my great-grandpa Figgins is in black and white from a copy of a newspaper clipping,” said Davis. “In his draft record, it gives a physical description of him and says his eyes are brown. That’s a cool discovery, because I never would have known his eye color.” The draft records can be the perfect springboard to searching other records, because they often give hints about the registered individual, such as clues to family members listed in the “closest living relative” section or employment clues.

Terrorism: Statement on the anniversary of the 22/3 attacks

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 22 marzo 2018

President Antonio Tajani, on the anniversary of the Brussels and London attacks (22 March 2016 and 22 March 2017 respectively), said: “Terrorism is an offence to our basic principles. Defending and honouring the victims of terror is equivalent to defending our values. In the name of all the victims, we are duty bound to verify whether our tools are adequate, or whether we could do more. In 2012 we adopted a Directive on victims’ rights. We should assess its implementation and see whether it is being applied across the board”. “Last year, the European Parliament also strengthened victims’ rights, by establishing measures for immediate assistance, particularly in situations with victims from across different borders. We saw attacks in cities with many tourists and expat communities in London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Nice, Stockholm and Barcelona. We must ensure that victims do not go through additional trauma to get help in a foreign city. The setting up of a special Committee on Terrorism is a signal of the importance we place on the security of our citizens. Thanks to its work, the Parliament will be able to enhance its efforts on the Union’s anti-terrorism policies”, President Tajani added.Chair of EP Special Committee on Terrorism, Nathalie Griesbeck (ALDE, FR), at the opening of a public hearing dedicated to the protection of victims’ rights, said: “Today my thoughts are with victims of terrorism and their families. I also welcome the work done by non-governmental organisations, which is essential and exemplary. A terrorist attack majorly breaches the victim’s trust in society. Our obligations are far beyond merely legal and moral. We must carry out our responsibilities, in order to not confine victims to their status, and to prove that our societies are strong and resilient. Member states must put in place the necessary structures and measures to assist victims. We have to guarantee that their needs are quickly met and carefully treated with humanity”.The Special Committee on Terrorism held a minute of silence with representatives of victims who participated yesterday and today in a series of public debates, organised and promoted by the European Parliament.

70th anniversary of Israel’s independence

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 23 febbraio 2018

Jerusalem, Israel Sunday, April 15, 2018 reception 7:30pm, concert 8:30 pm. International Convention Center Sderot Shazar 1. To mark the 70th anniversary of Israel’s independence, the extraordinary world premiere in Jerusalem of music rescued from the concentration camps.
A joyful musical testament to hope. Amidst the horrors of the concentration camps, musicians kept playing and composing. We know from the people and documents that survived, that they composed in the hope that their music would some day be played again. For more than three decades, Francesco Lotoro scoured the world looking for the hidden manuscripts and memories of the survivors, piecing together this precious musical testimony. The majority of the music is surprisingly joyful, despite the desperate circumstances in which it was composed and the likelihood that it would never be discovered.
On 15 April 2018, a unique concert will be taking place in the Capital of the Jewish State, where this music will be played to a public audience for the first time.
In the presence of both the President and the Prime Minister of the State of Israel Reuven Rivlin and Benjamin Netanyahu, Francesco Lotoro will lead musicians from The Ashdod Symphony Orchestra, alongside a new generation, including students from two schools in the Negev supported by JNF UK and KKL: Bikurim Music School near Gaza, and the Conservatorium of Music in Yerucham.
You have the chance to join them to witness this extraordinary story of defiance: a tribute to the memory of 6 million Jews murdered and a joyous celebration of their hope and belief in the Jewish future.

80th anniversary of the establishment of the World Jewish Congress

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 5 agosto 2016

NEW YORK – As the World Jewish Congress prepared to mark its 80th anniversary, President Ronald S. Lauder declared that vigilance and bold steps were as necessary today as they were in 1936 to defend Jews and Jewish community life, adding that the very existence of the WJC, the international Jewish umbrella organization, keep the situation for Jews around the world from deteriorating to the level of pre-Holocaust Germany. Ronald S. Lauder said:“In 1936, our founding fathers and mothers gathered in Switzerland to unite against the growing threat of Nazi Germany and to bring the Jewish plight to the world’s attention. Today, the world’s attitude toward Jews may still be hostile, but two things have certainly changed. Firstly, we have changed. The era of the quiet Jew, the timid Jew, the Ghetto Jew, is long over. Those leaders who set up the WJC 80 years ago buried that Jew – and he’s not coming back.“Secondly, there is the State of Israel, the only Jewish state in the world. The World Jewish Congress works to defend Israel and its people in the international arena, and we hope to contribute to achieving peace and stability in the Middle East “The founding of the World Jewish Congress put Jewish interests on the map of international diplomacy for the first time. I am sure that the founding fathers and mothers of the WJC, who could not prevent the Holocaust but who did much to help Jews during and after World War II, would have been proud of what the WJC and what Israel have achieved in recent decades.“Much needs to be done to fight anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry, but as we look back over the last 80 years, it is clear that the world would be an even more dangerous place for Jews were in not for the establishment of the WJC as the representative voice and diplomatic arm of world Jewry.”
8-15 August 1936: Founding assembly of the World Jewish Congress in Geneva The World Jewish Congress was formally established in Geneva, Switzerland, by a plenary assembly of 230 elected representatives from Jewish communities in 32 countries to serve as an umbrella body tasked to defend Jewish rights vis-à-vis governments and international bodies and to mobilize for the establishment of a Jewish home in what was then the Mandate of Palestine.Today, the WJC has affiliated member organizations in over 100 countries and territories and remains the only truly global Jewish umbrella organization.
8 August 1942: Riegner Telegram alerts world to Holocaust During World War II, the WJC set up a relief body to assist persecuted Jews in Europe and it alerted the world to the Holocaust. On 8 August 1942, the WJC’s Geneva representative Gerhart Riegner sent the famous telegram in which he informed the United States for the first time about the Nazis’ ‘Final Solution of the Jewish Question’, the plan to exterminate all Jews in the German-occupied territories. Riegner had received his information from the German industrialist Eduard Schulte.Throughout the war, the WJC lobbied the Allied governments to grant entry visas to Jewish refugees. Despite the US State Department’s opposition, the WJC obtained permission from the US Treasury Department, headed by Henry Morgenthau, to transmit funds to Europe for the rescue and assistance of persecuted Jews. According to a report by Riegner, these funds helped to bring 1,350 Jewish children from the occupied countries to Switzerland and 70 to Spain.
First Plenary AssemblyOn 9 August 1944, the head of the WJC’s Rescue Department, Arieh Leon Kubowitzki, sent a letter to the US Undersecretary of War John McCloy, relaying a message from Ernest Frischer of the Czechoslovak State Council urging the destruction of gas chambers and crematoria in Auschwitz-Birkenau and the bombing of railway communications in this area.
On 14 August 1944, McCloy replied to Kubowitzki by rejecting the idea, saying that “such an operation could be executed only by the diversion of considerable air support essential to the success of our forces now engaged in decisive operations elsewhere and would in any case be of such doubtful efficacy that it would not warrant the use of our resources.”In April 1945, the WJC managed to obtain the liberation of 4,500 inmates from the women’s concentration camp Ravensbrück through direct negotiations with top Nazi leader Heinrich Himmler.
In the aftermath of World War II, the WJC undertook efforts to rebuild Jewish communities in Europe, provided assistance to displaced persons and Shoah survivors, pushed for the indemnification of victims by Germany, and advocated for the punishment of Nazi leaders who committed crimes against humanity. In 1951, WJC President Nahum Goldmann established the Conference of Jewish Material Claims Against Germany to handle Jewish reparation claims. The World Jewish Congress also successfully lobbied the United Nations and governments to support the establishment of the State of Israel. After 1948, the WJC focused its attention on the plight of Jewish refugees in Arab countries and also drew international attention to the plight of Jews in the Soviet Union, who were ultimately granted permission to move to Israel or to remain in their communities.During the 1980s, the World Jewish Congress exposed the Nazi past of former UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, who was elected president of Austria in 1986.During the 1990s, the WJC successfully lobbied for the restitution of assets of Holocaust victims held in so-called ‘dormant’ bank accounts in Switzerland and elsewhere, and it ensured that they were returned to their rightful owners, or that adequate compensation was paid. Commissions were set up in 17 nations to investigate Holocaust-era assets, including looted art, and the funds recovered have been used to support a multitude of programs worldwide. The WJC also fought for justice for forced laborers – both Jewish and non-Jewish – whose agonizing hardship had gone uncompensated for decades, resulting in the setting up of a US$ 5 billion fund by Germany in 2001.
The World Jewish Congress has also been at the forefront of fostering a better understanding with other religions, notably with the Catholic Church, and the organization facilitated the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and the Holy See in 1993. (photo: First Plenary Assembly)
