Concorso internazionale “Architecture at Zero”

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 19 marzo 2018

Camerino.

University of Tennessee Architecture Students Design Tall Wood Structure for Nashville

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 7 gennaio 2018

architecture studentsAs the construction boom continues, sustainable urban building practices should be incorporated into every step of urban planning and development. Fourth year architecture students in the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design participated in the Nashville Civic Design Center’s (NCDC) Urban Design Studio challenge to design a wood-framed, high-rise multi-use structure.

On December 4, the architectural students participated in the final review of the 15-story Timber Tower Studio project, which was co-sponsored by Nashville-based LP Building Products, a leader in high-performance building solutions, and the UT-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor’s Chair for High-Performance Energy Practices in Urban Environments.“The opportunity to collaborate with community, industry and technical experts on this project has been crucial to the students’ experience,” said Ted Shelton, associate professor in UT’s School of Architecture. “These are the types of partnerships that will be required if we are to design and construct cities that do more work while using energy in a way that is as benign as possible.”
The December final review summarizes the students’ semester-long project to explore the conceptual design of a high-rise wood structure in downtown Nashville at Church Street and Polk Avenue. Over the course of the semester, the students paired their hands-on curriculum with input from industry professionals, including:Benton Johnson, an associate at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP, and an influencer in the urban mass timber movement Yugon Kim, co-founder of design firm IKD, where art, architecture, material and making intersect LP Building Products officials focused on progressive and sustainable building practices Nashville city officials focused on affordable housing, sustainability and more “The Urban Design Studio presents us with an opportunity to offer guidance on public policy and development practice in urban planning and design,” said Gary Gaston, chief executive officer of the Nashville Civic Design Center. “We are fortunate to have found the intersection of the eager, emerging UT architecture students with industry experts and organizations like LP Building Products who will help the students prepare themselves—and ultimately our communities and resources—for the future.”
“As an organization that seeks to find forward-thinking individuals, we were honored to be a part of this Urban Design Studio challenge,” said Mike Sims, SVP of sales, marketing and strategy at LP Building Products. “The participating students are some of tomorrow’s best and brightest designers, and we look to them to continue meeting community needs through progressive approaches and sustainable building practices. At LP, we help designers and builders find the solutions they need, so we admire the students’ innovative work to implement safe and sound building practices using sustainable wood materials.”NCDC will release a publication and exhibition of the student work in the spring of 2018, and anticipates further partnerships exploring innovative wood design and construction in the coming year. Across national and political boundaries, the definition and architectural expression

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 aprile 2016

public-ambitionToronto April 6, 2016 – May 6, 2016 OPENING 6:30pm – 8:30pm Istituto Italiano di Cultura – 496 Huron St., Free admission. Across national and political boundaries, the definition and architectural expression of what is public is undergoing a profound transformation. On the one hand, as governments decrease their investments in the architecture of public spaces, social experience is demoted to the form and character of privatized environments such as shopping malls. On the other hand, the popularity of virtual platforms are extending the conventional limits of the public sphere and redefining architecture as both an inhabitable site and a fluid image.
To negotiate these conditions architects must articulate strategies to reinterpret historically prominent public forms while pursuing new territories to engage and represent common space. Architects have responded to shifts in public interest by exploring new dimensions of transit and energy infrastructure while extending the traditional repertoire of public forms such as streets, squares, plazas, institutional, and sacred buildings. In order to support and legitimize public architecture as an essential aspect of everyday life, Italy and much of Europe have also pursued design quality through a mandate of design competitions. Public Ambitions exhibits ten works recently built in Italy that sensitively address the contemporary challenges of building public architecture from the three perspectives of architectural form, urban presence, and use as captured through mass media images.
The invited architects are: ABDR (Rome); Baukuh (Milan); CeZ (Bolzano); Emanuele Fidone (Siracusa); Garofalo Miura (Rome); ifdesign (Milan); mdu architetti (Prato); MoDus architects (Bressanone); Scandurra Studio Architettura (Milan); Studio Paola Viganò (Milan).
A lecture and discussion with the architects Paola Viganò (Studio Viganò, Milan) and Francesco Garofalo (Garofalo Miura, Rome) will be held on:April 7, 2016 – 6:00pmJohn H. Daniels, Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, Room 103 Free admission (photo: public ambition)

Ukraine crisis will forever change Europe’s security architecture

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 20 Maggio 2014

Ucraina-graThe current  crisis in relations between Europe and Russia over Ukraine is the first major continental crisis since the end of the Cold War in 1991. The consequences remain uncertain, writes World Review author Dr Uwe Nerlich, founding director of the Centre for European Security Strategies GmbH, Germany. ‘The crisis will change the European security architecture,’ he says. ‘It will change the geopolitical fabric on the continent, no matter what the future coherence and viability of Ukraine may turn out to be. Russia will be a different strategic player.’Europe faces multiple challenges. It has to maintain growth, competitiveness and social-political cohesion and to find the institutional solutions required to forge future common responses to upcoming crises. Further confrontational policies towards Russia will reinforce Europe’s drive to diversify its energy imports. ‘This would open an emerging market in Europe for US shale gas exports to replace Russian gas. Revenue from gas exports is vitally important for Russia’s economic viability,’ he says. Russia could move to more confrontation with the US and Europe in critical regions and to a greater anti-American, if not anti-Western alliance with China. This could increase Russia’s dependence on China, reduce its dependence on Europe, and free China’s hands in the evolving global competition – with the US newly-entangled in a distant quagmire.‘The world is undergoing thorough geopolitical change,’ says Dr Nerlich. ‘An unprecedented kind of global competition is unfolding. And it is creating unique conditions for Europe.  ‘Europe’s societal model and its strong, though underused technology-base, could provide it with the ability to dominate future global competition, provided it succeeds in alleviating internal tensions and increases its ability to compete globally as a united Europe.’
World Review author and international security advisor Dr Uwe Nerlich is a founding director of the Centre for European Security Strategies (CESS) based in Munich, Germany. Dr. Nerlich was a senior vice-president of IABG, and a member of the SWP directorate (now the German Institute for International and Security Affairs) which advises the Bundestag and the federal government on foreign and security issues. He has brought experience as chairman of a number of   international and national research organisations such as the European-American Institute for Security Research, the European Strategy Group (ESG) and he was a council member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London from 1978 to 1987. Arm and AVR32 products

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 3 giugno 2009

San Jose, California. Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) announced the SAM3U, the industry’s first ARM(R) Cortex(TM)-M3 Flash microcontroller integrating high speed (480 Mbps) USB Device-and-Transceiver, 4-bit 192 Mbps SDIO/SDCard 2.0, 8-bit 384 Mbps MMC 4.3 Host and 48 Mpbs SPI interfaces on-chip. This connectivity, together with the SAM3U’s 96 MHz/1.25 DMIPS/MHz operating frequency, makes the SAM3U the unique Cortex-M3 device suited to applications with intensive communications requirements, such high speed gateways in industrial, medical, data processing and consumer applications. The introduction of the SAM3U expands Atmel’s 32-Bit MCU portfolio consisting of ARM and AVR32 products. To fully exploit the SAM3U’s high speed communications peripherals, the device is built around a high data-bandwidth architecture with a 5-layer bus matrix, 23 DMA channels and distributed on-chip memory including up to 52k Bytes of SRAM split in three blocks and up to 256k Bytes of Flash in two banks. The dual bank Flash offers in-application programming (IAP) where one memory bank is written with a new version of the firmware while the processor executes from the other bank. A programmable boot feature enables switching between the two Flash banks at the next MCU reboot. Jacko Wilbrink, Atmel’s Marketing Director for ARM-based Microcontrollers, commented, “Atmel was the first to adapt USB Full Speed in its ARM Flash MCUs as a de-facto standard peripheral and we are now driving the deployment of USB High Speed in the embedded space. USB Full Speed at 12 Mbps displace the UART; USB High Speed at 480 Mbps has the potential to replace parallel wire interconnections, reducing cost, improving reliability and improving EMI characteristics.”
Atmel is a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of microcontrollers, advanced logic, mixed-signal, nonvolatile memory and radio frequency (RF) components. Leveraging one of the industry’s broadest intellectual property (IP) technology portfolios, Atmel is able to provide the electronics industry with complete system solutions focused on consumer, industrial, security, communications, computing and automotive markets.
