Antarctica: EU leads efforts to designate new large-scale Marine Protected Areas

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 6 ottobre 2021

Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, hosted a ministerial meeting to build further support for designating new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Southern Ocean. The meeting took place ahead of the 40th annual meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR, 18-29 October) and served to coordinate the actions of the co-sponsors. New co-sponsors were also announced during the meeting. Commissioner Sinkevičius said: “At this ministerial meeting we are reaffirming EU’s commitment to preserve the rich and vulnerable marine life of the Southern Ocean. It is now more imperative than ever to act to turn the tide, as biodiversity loss and climate change are affecting fragile ecosystems at an unprecedented pace. Many countries worldwide have acknowledged this urgency and have already become co-sponsor of the new Marine Protected Areas, but we need all CCAMLR members to join.” On 28 April 2021, Commissioner Sinkevičius hosted a first ministerial meeting, where new members joined as advocates of the East Antarctica and Weddell Sea MPA proposals. In the face of the current biodiversity loss and climate change crises, the EU once again calls on all CCAMLR members to take decisive action to conserve the unique and rich biodiversity and ecosystems of the Southern Ocean.

New Website Offers Free Online Medical Consultations for Underserved Countries and Disaster Areas

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 28 settembre 2019

A newly designed website at http://www.globaltelenet.org details how the Global Telehealth Network (GTN) plans to reduce health disparities by providing free online consultations for medically underserved areas.GTN is a nonprofit organization of physician volunteers who provide pro bono assistance for doctors and other health workers who are on the ground in under-resourced countries, refugee camps, conflict zones and disaster areas, as well as in underserved areas of the U.S.The organization is currently recruiting additional physician volunteers in primary care and a broad range of specialties.“While some physicians serve with medical or surgical missions, most of us can’t afford the time, expense and risks involved in traveling to distant places to provide hands-on care,” said Dr. Higgins. “However, providing online consults through videoconferencing is an attractive alternative. Meanwhile, those who serve with missions can use our network to offer year-round assistance to the same areas where they make periodic visits.”The organization is finding substantial interest from physicians who like the idea of working from their own homes or offices to save lives half-way around the world without having to travel there.GTN is also seeking contributions from donors to support the pilot projects in Tanzania and Uganda, as well as development of a software algorithm to match requesting doctors and other health workers with consultants. Through artificial intelligence and machine learning, the algorithm will continue to improve its ability to match each health worker with the most appropriate physician volunteer.

European elections: What form of cohabitation between France and the EU?

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 29 Maggio 2014

electionThis Tribune by Yves Bertoncini explains that the result of the European elections in France and in Europe on 22-25 May teaches us three major lessons at both the national and the Community level:
1. The Right in government has lost ground and the Left in government is treading water, both in France and in Europe as a whole, to the benefit of eurosceptic and europhobic parties
2. The National Front’s lead singles France out and weakens it in Europe
3. The new European Parliament’s decisions will continue to rest on the variable-geometry majorities set in motion by the conservatives and the socialists and democrats under the europhobes’ gaze
So all in all, the European election has opened up an era of cohabitation not only between majority pro-European forces and minority europhobic forces, but also between France and the other members of the EU in areas extending well beyond the mere arena of the European Parliament. This Tribune was published in the French edition of the Huffington Post (election)
