Commission approves emergency measures to protect eastern Baltic cod

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 30 luglio 2019

The Commission has announced emergency measures to save the ailing eastern Baltic cod stock from impending collapse. Emergency measures will ban, with immediate effect, commercial fishing for cod in most of the Baltic Sea until 31 December 2019.
Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, said: “The impact of this cod stock collapsing would be catastrophic for the livelihoods of many fishermen and coastal communities all around the Baltic Sea. We must urgently act to rebuild the stock – in the interest of fish and fishermen alike. That means responding rapidly to an immediate threat now, through the emergency measures the Commission is taking. But it also means managing the stock – and the habitat it lives in – properly in the long term.”The ban will come into force immediately and last until 31 December 2019. It will cover all fishing vessels and apply in all those areas of the Baltic Sea where the largest part of the stock is present (i.e. subdivisions 24-26), except for some specific targeted derogations. It follows measures that have already been taken by some Member States. Given that these measures do not ensure a uniform approach in all areas where the eastern Baltic cod stock is found, and that not all Member States intend to adopt national measures, the Commission has decided that further emergency action is warranted.
While this fishing ban is an essential immediate step to help protect this vulnerable stock, the Commission and Member States will revisit the need for longer-term action later in the year, when Ministers meet to decide on next year’s fishing opportunities. Scientists also warn of many factors besides fishing that threaten the stock and that need to be addressed separately, including a lack of salinity, too high water temperatures and too little oxygen, as well as parasite infestation.

Catella closes successful capital acquisition for newly listed Baltic Horizon

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 30 giugno 2016

catellaCatella has acted as financial advisor to fund management company Northern Horizon Capital in connection with capital raising and market listing of Baltic Horizon Fund. The public offering is now successfully completed and Catella has raised approximately EUR 25 million during June. During the process Catella acted as financial advisor and lead manager of the public offering in Sweden and manager of the institutional offering in Luxembourg in relation to capital raising and listing of Baltic Horizon Fund, which is managed by Northern Horizon Capital. “This has been a team effort in which Catella Bank conducted capital raising during a focused process over two weeks in June, together with Catella’s Corporate Finance unit in Stockholm. The thorough preparatory work we conducted earlier last autumn paved the way for stability throughout the process,” says Dennis Nygren, Head of Wealth Management at Catella. Baltic Horizon Fund is a real estate fund with no particular lifetime focusing on centrally located commercial property in the capitals of the Baltic countries. “Despite financial instability due to Brexit we have now successfully closed this capital acquisition. The strong market reactions following Brexit have affected interest from certain investors in the short term. For other investors, conversely, interest in centrally located commercial properties in the capitals of the Baltic countries has increased,” says Martin Malhotra, project manager at Catella.

Maritime stakeholders confirm joint efforts for Blue Growth in Baltic Sea Region

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 30 marzo 2015

geomarThe Conference of Maritime Stakeholders Platform in the Baltic Sea Region in Kiel (26 & 27 March 2015) brought together all key maritime stakeholders from business, academia and the public sector across the Baltic Sea region to discuss smart specialisation, maritime technologies and skills and employment. Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, who opened the conference, said: “The Baltic Sea area is known for its focus on innovation and sustainable technologies. I am proud to be part of an event that aims to promote stronger cross-regional cooperation between maritime technology innovators and operators and thus contribute to a more sustainable use of the Baltic Sea and reinforce the competitiveness of the European Maritime economy”.The conference represents the first step of the European Commission’s “Sustainable Blue Growth Agenda for the Baltic Sea Region” adopted in May 2014 to promote the maritime potential of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.
Recent studies suggest that the most promising avenues for development in the region are short-sea shipping, coastal and cruise tourism, offshore wind, shipbuilding, aquaculture, blue biotechnologies, better use of maritime cluster potential, as well as engaging the business and research community more closely in policy planning and its development. The coastal countries can take full advantage of the opportunities offered by the sea by better planning of their maritime space, by integrating development processes across different sectors and by widening the scope for smart infrastructures. Innovation focusing on maritime technologies, renewable energy, port reception facilities, maritime and coastal tourism and aquaculture can contribute to the economic strength of the region. The European Commission reaffirms its commitment to help in appropriate capacity building and in improving the coordination mechanisms in Baltic coastal states in order to achieve more growth in the region. The discussions in Kiel’s conference confirmed that a stakeholder-driven, cross-Baltic joined effort for Blue Growth in the Baltic Sea Region is already in place.
