Developing a sustainable blue economy in the European Union

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 28 Maggio 2021

The European Commission is proposing a new approach for a sustainable blue economy in the EU for the industries and sectors related to oceans, seas and coasts. A sustainable blue economy is essential to achieving the objectives of the European Green Deal and ensuring a green and inclusive recovery from the pandemic.Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President for the Green Deal said: “Healthy oceans are a precondition for a thriving blue economy. Pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction, coupled with the effects of the climate crisis, all threaten the rich marine biodiversity that the blue economy depends on. We must change tack and develop a sustainable blue economy where environmental protection and economic activities go hand in hand.” Virginijus Sinkevičius, Commissioner for the Environment, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs said: “The pandemic has hit the marine economy sectors in different, but profound ways. We have an opportunity to start afresh, and we want to make sure that the recovery shifts the focus from mere exploitation to sustainability and resilience. Thus to be truly green, we must also think blue.” All blue economy sectors including fisheries, aquaculture, coastal tourism, maritime transport, port activities and shipbuilding will have to reduce their environmental and climate impact. Tackling the climate and biodiversity crises requires healthy seas and a sustainable use of their resources to create alternatives to fossil fuels and traditional food production. Transitioning to a sustainable blue economy requires investing in innovative technologies. Wave- and tidal energy, algae production, development of innovative fishing gear or restoration of marine ecosystems will create new green jobs and businesses in the blue economy.

Blue Economy: A new call for proposals to kindle sustainable maritime development across Europe

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 20 novembre 2018

Bruxelles. Realising the full potential of the ocean will demand responsible, sustainable approaches to its economic development – says a recent report by the OECD.
But what are the barriers to such responsible development? What are the factors still preventing eco-friendly sectors from growing up and shaping up a sustainable ocean economy?
Having identified a few of them, the Commission has been piloting its recent policies and investments to overcome obstacles such as the mismatch between workers’ skills and labour market needs; the scattering of research efforts; and the conspicuous absence of funds to scale up promising projects from pilot to demonstration phase. The Blue Labs section (€5 million) supports new, multidisciplinary partnerships between maritime stakeholders that can drive innovation forward in the blue economy. The Blue Careers section (€5.5 million) supports the development of innovative vocational training schemes that boost both industry engagement and entrepreneurial skills. And the blue economy grants (€8.2 million) help innovative technologies and services find the capital they need to become market ready.
The call is now open to applicants until 31 January 2019. An information session is scheduled on 22 November 2018 in Brussels. The event will showcase some of the most notable Blue Labs, Blue Careers and Blue Tech projects generated by the first call of this kind in 2016, and will explain in detail the new call and the application process.

€566 billion and growing: the EU blue economy is thriving

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 21 luglio 2018

The EU’s Blue Economy – all economic activities related to oceans, seas and coastal areas – is growing steadily, according to the EU’s first annual report on the blue economy. With a turnover of € 566 billion, the sector generates € 174 billion of value added and creates jobs for nearly 3.5 million people.
European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, said: “The EU’s blue economy is consistently growing over the last decade and the potential for the future is promising. With investments in innovation and through responsible ocean management, integrating environmental, economic and social aspects, we can double the sector in a sustainable way by 2030.”Tibor Navracsics, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, responsible for the JRC, said: “Thanks to the scientific input provided by the Joint Research Centre we are able to track what drives the blue economy and how it is developing. This report will support policymakers and stakeholders in creating new business opportunities and managing the resources of oceans, seas and coastal resources in a sustainable manner.”
The blue economy represents all economic activities related to our oceans, seas or coastal areas. It covers established sectors such as fisheries, shipbuilding and tourism as well as emerging industries, including ocean energy and biotechnology. In several EU member states, the blue economy has grown faster than the national economy in the last decade. During the financial crisis, the blue economy proved more resilient in those member states, softening the effects of the downturn on coastal economies. The report presents the current status and recent trends in the six established blue economy sectors in different EU Member States, to gain insight into where new opportunities and sustainable competitive advantage may be found.

Western Mediterranean: Actions for the sustainable development of the blue economy

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 1 Maggio 2017

blue economyBrussels, the European Commission launches a new initiative for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the Western Mediterranean region. The region covers economic hubs like Barcelona, Marseille, Naples and Tunis. It also includes tourist destinations like the Balearic Islands, Sicily and Corsica.
The sea’s biodiversity is under severe pressure with a recent report by scientists from the Joint Research Centre indicating that 50% has been lost in the last 50 years. In addition to this are recent security and safety concerns from the increase in migration from the South to the North. This initiative will allow EU and neighbouring countries to work together to increase maritime safety and security, promote sustainable blue growth and jobs, and preserve ecosystems and biodiversity.
Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said: “Millions of holiday makers have a happy association with the Western Mediterranean. Like the millions more who live across the region, they understand the fragile link between conserving national habitats and traditions and ensuring economic viability. Blue economy is important for each of the countries involved and they have recognised the strength of working together.”
Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, said: ”This new regional initiative recognises and taps into the economic potential of the Mediterranean Sea and its coast lines to further enhance economic growth, contribute to job creation and eventually the stabilisation of the region. It is an important step towards closer coordination and cooperation among participating countries.”
The initiative is the fruit of years’ of dialogue between ten countries of the Western Mediterranean region who are ready and willing to work together on these shared interests for the region: five EU Member States (France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Malta), and five Southern partner countries (Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia). It follows up on the Ministerial Declaration on Blue Economy endorsed by the Union for Mediterranean (UfM) on 17 November 2015. (photo: blue economy)

Friend of the Sea is “the single largest source of certified wild catch on the global market” according to the SSI report

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 18 Maggio 2016

production“The State of Sustainability Initiatives Review: Standards and the Blue Economy”, a study founded by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, has recently highlighted Friend of the Sea’s fast growth, based on a strict approach, open to small scale producers and developing countries.According to the SSI, “FOS has grown five times as fast as MSC over the last seven years.” “FOS is accounting for 6.2 per cent and the MSC accounting for 5.7 per cent of total seafood production”. The SSI concludes that currently FOS is “the single largest source of certified wild catch on the global market.”
The report underlines how “the majority of MSC-certified production being sourced from developed countries and the majority of FOS-certified production being sourced from developing countries.” FOS fair and balanced approach is reflected in its governance: FOS advisory board is equally composed by representatives of developing and developed countries, men and women. Representatives of NGOs and civil society are the only decision makers in FOS, guaranteeing independence and neutrality to consumers and companies.
FOS certified aquaculture volumes are three times as large as organic certification volumes worldwide and are higher than BAP and ASC. Together with its partner GGAP, FOS covers over 60% of total worldwide certified aquaculture. FOS aquaculture certification has a growth trend of over 40% per year.FOS scores higher than other major wild catch certification programs in terms of environmental (+25%), economic (+100%) and social (+400%) indexes. FOS has also a stricter Chain of custody model, including mass balance and book and claim.
The SSI report concludes that “as the only non-organic global standard certifying both wild catch and aquaculture, FOS has a unique opportunity to oversee sector transformation by managing the distribution of supply between wild catch and aquaculture. Moreover, it also has the potential to develop its own internal market, supplying certified wild catch product to certified aquaculture production in the form of fish meal.”
