New Health Data Policies and Incentives Coming for California Healthcare

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 13 aprile 2019

California health data could be significantly more connected soon, thanks to the twin forces of proposed federal regulations for information sharing combined with a new state incentive program for health data exchange. California is investing $50 million this year to help hospitals and providers participate in health information exchanges (HIEs). It’s called the California Medi-Cal HIE Onboarding Program (Cal-HOP).
“Massive change and opportunity are coming for California healthcare in the next few months,” said Claudia Williams, CEO of Manifest MedEx, who also previously led health data policy at the White House. “Hospitals, clinics, providers, and health plans are all facing new requirements for sharing health data information and have new financial support available to help make those connections. We’re doing what we can to support health leaders across the state as they put data to work.”Healthcare leaders are invited to register for a free webinar on Monday, April 15, at 3:00 p.m. PT. Hosted by Williams and Erica Galvez, chief strategy officer for Manifest MedEx, who previously developed the Office of the National Coordinator’s (ONC) interoperability road map, this free session will answer health policy questions and give healthcare leaders a head start on earning Cal-HOP incentives. The nonprofit has also structured a special limited-time bonus program offering $60,000 to qualifying hospitals that choose Manifest MedEx as their HIE partner for the Cal-HOP program before May 31, 2019. Learn more about this bonus incentive and sign up here.
“We hope that providing additional resources will make it easy for hospitals across our state to sign up and get value quickly,” said Williams. “Accelerating health information sharing in California is key to improving patient care, reducing healthcare costs, and collaboratively doing the hard work of transforming our medical systems.”More than 400 healthcare organizations in California already participate in the Manifest MedEx health data network, receiving real-time information on millions of patients every day. Recently announced new participants include AHMC Healthcare, Health Net, Heritage California, Hill Physicians, Scripps Health, and Stanford Health Care.

California Life Sciences Association (CLSA) Welcomes Proposed 5-Year Delay of Medical Device Tax

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 14 dicembre 2018

California Life Sciences Association (CLSA), the trade association representing California’s life sciences industry, welcomes the introduction of new legislation in Congress this week that suspends until December 2024 the innovation and job hindering 2.3% medical device excise tax levied on medical device firms established as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The tax is currently suspended until December 2019. The following statement can be attributed to Sara Radcliffe, President & CEO, CLSA:“California Life Sciences Association (CLSA) welcomes the introduction of legislation that places an additional delay on the ill-conceived 2.3% medical device excise tax, until December 2024. Since its inception, this tax has only hindered investment in medical technology research and development.“While our membership, comprised of the nation’s leading medical technology innovators, certainly welcomes an additional 5-year reprieve from the tax, CLSA will continue to advocate for full and permanent repeal, so that the U.S. does not jeopardize our position as a global leader in medical technology innovation. As the voice of California’s life sciences community, we strongly urge our California congressional delegation to support this measure to suspend this counterproductive tax.”

Climate change plays second fiddle as California burns

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 14 novembre 2018

By Jon Allsop. California is burning again. Separate fires in the north and south of the state wreaked devastation over the weekend and are not done yet. In SoCal, the Woolsey Fire has killed two people so far. In Butte County, north of Sacramento, the death toll from the Camp Fire is 29 and rising, with more than 200 people still missing. Many news organizations have stressed the historic proportions of the latter fire, in particular—on Sunday night, it tied as the deadliest recorded in California history. While outlets at all levels have painted poignant portraits of human suffering, local newspapers, as is their responsibility, have led with more pragmatic coverage. Small titles like the Chico Enterprise-Record have reported on what dislocated residents can expect to happen next. The San Francisco Chronicle, meanwhile, took a bigger picture look at how the state’s intensifying fire threat might be mitigated going forward. The Woolsey and Camp fires are not coincidental, one-off monstrosities, but rather significant new evidence of a rapidly changing climate. Sadly, far too much media coverage has failed to draw that link. That oversight is not surprising—in turn, it fits its own trend of big news organizations investing in detailed reporting on climate change, then failing to cite it in their quick turnaround stories when the threat strikes close to home. (As Hurricane Michael made landfall in Florida last month, CJR’s Pete Vernon pointed out that newspaper front pages did not mention climate change, despite having splashed dire UN climate projections just days earlier.) Over the weekend, fire stories that did reference climate change often did so in quotation marks, referencing, variously, high-profile comments from outgoing California Governor Jerry Brown, Los Angeles fire chief Daryl Osby, and the musician Neil Young (the latter’s remarks, on his website, were a rare benefit of a cycle that otherwise paid wildly disproportionate attention to celebrities losing their homes). These are weighty voices, and editors’ hesitation to blame individual meteorological events on climate change in the absence of conclusive proof is not without reason. Nonetheless, this sort of attribution is not sufficiently authoritative. Brown’s comments, in particular, were framed as a political dispute with President Trump, even though the latter’s weekend tweets blaming poor forest management for the fires carried significantly less merit. There is clear contextual evidence of the role of climate change in California’s worsening wildfire problem, and not enough outlets have cited it. The San Francisco Chronicle, at least, quickly got bona fide experts on the record: LeRoy Westerling, a climate and fire scientist at the University of California, Merced, for example, told the paper that “Climate change is drying out our landscape.” The Chronicle’s editorial board itself weighed in definitively as the fires spread on Friday, adding a practical call to action. “Rather than absolve us of responsibility for the growing human and material devastation of wildfires,” it wrote, “global warming should spur more urgent efforts to mitigate the danger with policies that make sense in any weather.” (font: CJR Editors)

Fluence Awarded Contract for Innovative Reuse Water System in California

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 13 aprile 2018

Fluence Corporation Limited (ASX:FLC) announced today that it has received a contract to deliver a water treatment reuse system to its customer Rosenblad Design Group (Rosenblad). Fluence’s zero liquid discharge (ZLD) solution will utilize ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis equipment to treat brine for reuse. The system will be integrated and utilized as part of a larger turnkey water treatment project Rosenblad is installing in California. California is one of the largest water and wastewater treatment markets for Fluence. This will be Fluence’s first ZLD system in the continental United States and is particularly significant for its location in California, where the local government has recently renewed the drought declaration and is once again implementing restrictions on water consumption. This water reuse system has benefits to the end user beyond the obvious environmental ones, which include the reduction of costly waste management and the increase in product recovery, capturing maximum utility from its resources. The market for water reuse in the US is expected to grow over the next couple of decades due to policy change, population growth and climate related challenges in water scarce regions. Fluence’s Managing Director and CEO, Henry Charrabé said: “Our team is working closely with Rosenblad to support this project. Rosenblad is well known for its extensive experience as a leading provider of high quality evaporation technologies. Combined with Fluence’s water process expertise, we trust this will be the first of many future joint projects between Fluence and Rosenblad.”Rosenblad President, Fredrik Thelander, added: “This project win is due to a very close collaborative effort between Rosenblad and Fluence. We selected Fluence as our partner due to their strong process knowledge within the water space. We look forward to working closely with Fluence, where we can utilize their expertise and technology, together with ours, in order to deliver a highly efficient zero liquid discharge system to meet the most stringent environmental regulatory requirements in California with an optimized operating cost solution for the end user.”The Fluence system is expected to be delivered, installed and operational onsite by the end of 2018.

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 11 gennaio 2018

californiaCalifornia American Water has launched a new initiative to help customers navigate and better understand the components of their water bills. Starting today, all residential customers on the Monterey Peninsula that have registered an email address with their water account will receive an email notification, including a personalized video of their monthly water bill, along with conservation information. The emails will run monthly through March, unless the customer chooses to unsubscribe from the messages. The animated video will walk customers through their total current charges and total amount due, and highlight water use for the current month compared to the previous month. The video also clarifies water service and usage charges, tiered rates, and surcharges. Finally, the video reminds customers that the Monterey Peninsula faces state-ordered restrictions on its water supply, and offers conservation tips to help achieve a low level of water consumption.
“With tiered rates and a number of surcharges, water bills on the Monterey Peninsula can appear complicated. These videos are an effort to improve our communication about our water charges. We hope customers will use these videos to analyze their water use and better understand their bills,” said External Affairs Manager Catherine Stedman. The videos will be sent via email soon after electronic bills are available online and about 5 days before the customer’s monthly bill arrives in the mail. Exceptions for customers receiving manual meter reads and those with billing disputes or arrangements will apply. The video also contains information about services available on California American Water’s website, such as paperless billing registration, links to rebate applications and other available water conservation programs.
