CES 2019: Bosch extends its position as a leading IoT company

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 9 gennaio 2019

More and more, the internet of things (IoT) is changing our world. At CES 2019 in Las Vegas, Bosch is showing what it is already capable of today. From a concept for a shuttle vehicle that makes a new kind of mobility tangible, to fridges with connectivity that give advice on food storage, to smart lawn mowers that learn by doing – the spectrum of solutions Bosch is presenting at the world’s largest consumer electronics show is huge. “Bosch recognized the huge opportunities of the IoT early on. We have been actively shaping the connected world for nearly ten years now,” says the Bosch board of management member Dr. Markus Heyn. “Today, we are a leading IoT company. Step by step, we have extended our software and IT expertise.” Using its own IoT cloud, the company has already carried out more than 270 projects in field such as mobility, smart homes, smart cities, and agriculture. The number of sensors and devices connected over the Bosch IoT Suite has risen nearly 40 percent since last year, and now stands at 8.5 million. One of the keys to further growth and new business opportunities on the internet of things is artificial intelligence (AI). This is also a field in which Bosch is playing a decisive part in driving developments. “We will best be able to unlock the potential of the IoT if we combine it with AI, and take our IoT and AI activities forward in parallel,” Heyn says. In his view, the relationship between the two fields is complementary: “The IoT needs intelligence. The use of connected things to gather data can be a decisive boost for the development of AI. It is only through AI that connected things become intelligent and learn to draw their own conclusions. Above all, we aim to achieve concrete improvements in people’s real, everyday lives – things such as more time, more security, more efficiency, and more convenience.” Here, Heyn cites the example of video-based fire detection: by using intelligent image analysis, security cameras are able to identify fires within a few seconds, even before the system’s sensors detect heat and smoke. In this way, fires can be detected considerably earlier than with conventional fire or smoke alarm systems. This saves valuable minutes in which lives can be saved.A second key to success on the path to the IoT age is partnerships. Here, Bosch is opting for a mix of traditional and new players. The alliance recently agreed with the Canadian platform provider Mojio has already resulted in the first integrated IoT platform for connected vehicles: in the event of an accident, a special Bosch algorithm can identify where and when the accident happened, and how severe it is. Via the Mojio cloud, the data are transmitted without any delay to the Bosch emergency service center, which automatically sends an emergency call to local rescue services. At the same time, a message is sent to a predetermined list of recipients, either as a text message or via the Mojio app. “Together with Mojio, we are connecting vehicles directly with the cloud. This means rescue services can get to the scene of an accident even faster than before,” says Mike Mansuetti, the president of Bosch North America. From the middle of next year, the IoT emergency solution will be available for nearly a million drivers in North America and Europe.

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 11 gennaio 2018

GE Appliances_ kitchenSince inventing the over-the-range microwave and introducing industry-exclusive products like the Advantium™ speedcook oven, GE Appliances has long owned that convenient, accessible space above the range. Now, this high-activity zone of kitchen real estate is getting even smarter with GE Appliances’ industry-exclusive kitchen hub, premiering during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.
GE Appliances’ kitchen hub is unlike any other kitchen smart device—in both functionality and location. Its placement over the range puts tech where it belongs: at a comfortable viewing level and above the one appliance family and friends gather around while making dinner and conversation at the end of the day.“The kitchen is the heart of the home, and the range is the heart of the kitchen,” said Shawn Stover, vice president of GE Appliances’ SmartHome Solutions team. “The original concept was conceived by FirstBuild, GE Appliances’ co-creation community. With the vision of a lot of creative, smart people, we now have the kitchen hub, over the range so owners have the convenience to enjoy the many smart features we have to offer now and in the future.”By becoming part of the Haier Appliance Company, GE Appliances can now leverage a ubiquitous global technology. The smart kitchen hub is enabled by the Haier U+ Smart Life Platform, a proven operating system that is global, open and secure, with virtually endless interoperability possibilities.
Mom’s famous pasta primavera is sure to wow your dinner guests, but you wonder: Was it one clove of garlic—or two? That’s when you invite her to video chat through the kitchen hub and suddenly she’s cooking with you, watching as you add the perfect pinch of this and just a dash of that. Suddenly your doorbell rings, you pull up the video and see your guests have arrived. You thank your mom for the help, start a playlist for hors d’oeuvres and drinks, and go greet your guests for an amazing meal.At the time of its official launch later in 2018, smart features will include:Live video chat functionality with multiple camera angles, a forward-facing lens so owners can call mom for cooking advice or simply catch up with friends.
Access to recipes and guidance to explore new culinary possibilities that will impress family and guests A cooktop-facing camera and ample task lighting make sharing your latest culinary masterpiece on social media easier than ever.
Improved organization with access to calendars and schedules to keep it all straight at the start of a busy day Over-the-air updates keep the kitchen hub current and in tune with the latest features
Interactivity and sharing life’s moments are just two uncommon advantages of this over-the-range kitchen hub. This 27-inch smart screen can communicate with other connected appliances including GE brand washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, wall ovens and, of course, ranges. GE Appliances kitchen hub, also provides exhaust hood ventilation. (photo: GE Appliances’ kitchen)

Garmin® heads to CES with a new scalable infotainment platform

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 5 gennaio 2018

GarminGarmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), will be introducing its scalable infotainment platform for Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The platform uses the Intel Atom® quad core x7 or Intel Atom® dual core x5 (Apollo Lake) processor and includes multiple premium industry-firsts for consumers like wireless rear-seat navigation, comprehensive weather forecasts along a route, Foursquare’s Location Intelligence and Places Database, and unique integration of Amazon’s cloud-based Alexa voice service. A brief highlight video showing the infotainment system can be viewed here.
“Garmin’s scalable infotainment platform offers a level of performance and design that consumers expect from consumer electronics but have never seen in OEM infotainment,” said Kip Dondlinger, Garmin automotive OEM manager of product and user experience. “The new platform provides adaptable hardware and software for infotainment head units that suit specific OEM needs at the mid- and high-end levels of the market.”Driving in bad weather can be a common concern for consumers. To help bring peace of mind, Garmin utilizes predictive routing algorithms that work with AccuWeather Go™ powered by MinuteCast® technology to display the weather conditions that can be expected along any given route. Thanks to this joint effort between Garmin and AccuWeather, the scalable infotainment platform offers the first navigation system to provide comprehensive minute-by-minute weather forecasts with Superior Accuracy™ to pinpoint exact routes. The Garmin scalable infotainment platform takes Alexa integration in the vehicle to a new level. Alexa works directly with the on-board navigation and media player software established by Garmin – which means no smartphones or apps required. Consumers can easily select their destination with the Alexa hands-free voice service and then have it automatically synced to turn-by-turn navigation from Garmin. What’s more, consumers can ask Alexa questions and receive both audio and on-screen responses; play music through the head unit’s media player; control home automation while traveling on the road; and access hundreds of other Alexa skills from the vehicle’s head unit.In addition, Garmin also uses the infotainment platform for Wireless Rear Seat Navigation and Entertainment. Tablets or smartphones – Apple or Android – will have access to the head unit’s mapping and full navigation functionality streaming over Wi-Fi® to the rear seat. Rear seat passengers will be able to see the vehicle’s route, search points of interest, and even send destinations to the head unit. Users can also stream media content from the infotainment system to their device via Wi-Fi, making the vehicle an entertainment hub that mimics the experience seen on commercial airliners. The versatile platform includes on-board and connected Foursquare points of interest (POI) integration, a feature that was recently launched by Garmin as a factory-installed navigation solution. With Foursquare’s Places Database that powers 125,000+ developers including Uber, Twitter, Samsung and Snapchat, Foursquare adds more POIs in the categories of Food and Drink, Lodging, and Entertainment which are the most searched categories in a car.During CES, the infotainment platform will be installed in a new demonstration vehicle with an all-digital Garmin instrument cluster with full-screen moving maps. In this vehicle, Garmin will showcase the platform in conjunction with “Lenexa” HMI (human machine interface). As shown in the 2017 concept, the Lenexa HMI’s unique knob and display design makes frequently used audio and smartphone features more easily accessible through tactile controls. For decades, Garmin has pioneered new GPS navigation and wireless devices and applications that are designed for people who live an active lifestyle. Garmin serves five primary business units, including automotive, aviation, fitness, marine, and outdoor recreation. (photo: garmin)
