Caritas Internationalis Christmas campaign

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 17 dicembre 2020

Caritas Internationalis’ Christmas campaign is focused on COVID-19. The confederation invites its benefactors to give a safe Christmas to all the people around the world who are suffering because of the pandemic and its dramatic consequences in terms of increased poverty and food insecurity.Through the COVID-19 Response Fund, promoted by Caritas Internationalis and the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, 38 Caritas organisations have supported programmes in to help more than 13.7 million people in countries such as Belarus, Ethiopia, Jordan, Rwanda, Iraq, Greece, Nigeria, Pakistan, Lebanon, Ukraine and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Examples of implemented projects are available in booklet Responding with Love during the COVID-19 pandemic, by Caritas Internationalis.Caritas Jerusalem, for example, has provided medical assistance in Gaza where about 80% of the population depends on humanitarian aid and about 90% of families have no access to drinking water. Caritas India is carrying out awareness programmes on the prevention of contagion and is providing food assistance and basic necessities. Caritas South Africa has already received and supported more than 12,000 vulnerable people in six dioceses, mostly migrants who are now at risk of starvation and more vulnerable to the pandemic. Among them, there is an Angolan refugee mother of six.“This mother told me that Caritas’ help was the answer to her prayers!” says Sister Maria Rissini, director of Caritas South Africa. “But unfortunately there are many families that we are unable to support due to lack of resources and, sadly, we do not have the opportunity to feed the malnourished mothers and children who knock at our door”.This Christmas, Caritas Internationalis is asking for further help from its benefactors to fund nine more projects in Armenia, Burundi, Cambodia, Eritrea, Georgia, Haiti, Liberia, Mozambique and Sierra Leone. The projects include the distribution of food parcels and hygiene kits and personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, etc.), as well as awareness-raising programmes on hygiene and the prevention of COVID-19 infection. The programmes also include the distribution of blankets, mattresses, heating fuel, winter clothes and tents to refugees staying in camps, so that they can cope with the cold temperatures of the winter months. Caritas also ensures that children in rural communities can continue their studies through distance learning programmes. Forty-five percent of children in developing countries have no access to the Internet. The COVID-19 pandemic showed us how interconnected and fragile we are. The fight against the spread of this virus is our collective responsibility. As Good Samaritans, we are called to demonstrate our unconditional universal love, meet the needs of the most vulnerable and bring consolation which can break desolation and create hope when everything is dark. This is the miracle of charity”.

Christmas Special Integral Human Development «Steps on the path of good»

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 22 dicembre 2019

Merry ChristmasThe first proclamation, made by the angles of the birth of Christ, invites us to receive God’s love and to love him in return with the very love which is his gift. This brings forth in our lives and actions a primary and funda mental response: to desire, seek and protect the good of others. (cf. Evangelii Gaudium, n 178)
Britain’s nightmare before Christmas

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 9 dicembre 2019

Our cover this week is on the most important election in Britain for many years. Voters face a stark choice between Boris Johnson, whose Tories promise a hard Brexit, and Jeremy Corbyn, whose Labour Party plans to “rewrite the rules of the economy” along radical socialist lines. Mr Johnson runs the most unpopular new government on record; Mr Corbyn is the most unpopular leader of the opposition. That leaves a low bar for the Liberal Democrats and, for all their faults, they clear it. Their economic approach is the most sensible; on climate change and social policy they strike the best balance between ambition and realism. Yet they will not win. So why back them? The principled reason is that the Lib Dems are closest to the liberalism on which this newspaper was founded. But there is a practical reason, too. Voters worry that backing the Lib Dems plays into Mr Corbyn’s hands. However, our modelling suggests that votes and seats would come from both the main parties. A Lib Dem surge would be the best way to restrain whoever ends up in Downing Street. (by Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-Chief from the Economist)

Christmas goes digital

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 17 dicembre 2018

This year once again, the gifts under the Christmas tree will be emitting beeps, buzzes, and radio waves. According to the Consumer Technology Association, holiday consumer tech sales are poised to hit a record $96.1 Billion in the U.S. this year. This could be a smart watch, a game console, or of course a smart phone. This also means that Bosch will figure prominently under people’s Christmas trees, even though few may realize it. There’s at least one Bosch MEMS sensor in more than half the smartphones on the planet, and five of them on average in every new car. And there are millions more in drones, game consoles, fitness wristbands, and vacuum-cleaning robots. Bosch has produced more than ten billion of these miniature sensors in its wafer fab at Reutlingen since 1995. “MEMS sensors are the building blocks of the connected world. They endow everyday objects with sensory perception and connect them with the internet,” says Jens Fabrowsky, member of the executive management of the Automotive Electronics division at Robert Bosch GmbH. With the number of connected devices rising fast – Gartner expects the global count to come to 20 billion by 2020 – MEMS sensors are sure to become chip-sized superheroes that we simply cannot do without.

This Christmas, European church leaders unite for refugees and migrants

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 7 dicembre 2018

Brussels. In the spirit of Christmas, European church leaders are affirming the values of dignity, respect and compassion for refugees and migrants. Today a strong Christmas statement signed by church leaders from Europe and beyond was jointly issued by the Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe (CCME) and the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and was presented to Mairead McGuinness, First Vice-President of the European Parliament in Brussels.
More than thirty signatories of the statement come from diverse church traditions across Europe, including Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and African-Instituted, among others. At the same time, regional and international Christian organisations, chapters of Christian world communions and ecumenical organisations have endorsed the statement.Speaking after the handover ceremony, Vice President McGuiness commented, “This statement is timely, challenging and is really worth reading. It calls upon all of us who have strong shoulders to bear greater weight than those who have less strong shoulders. It reminds us that everyone has a responsibility and that we need to care and if we don’t care at Christmas time than what is the best time to care for those less fortunate.”“We commit to more fervently articulating and working towards our vision of an inclusive and participatory society – for newly arrived and all inhabitants,” reads the statement.
Offering theological reflection on the story of Christmas and displacement the statement subthemes read: “Jesus became human, Jesus the refugee, Jesus the stranger”. The statement features a Christian approach to action and policy in church and society arguing for safe passage to protection and realistic labour migration policies in Europe. The church leaders also stress the need for solidarity as a guiding principle for governing migration and refugee reception.“While drafting the statement and collecting signatures we recognised how broad the consensus is on this topic among churches. This, I see as sign of hope, just before Christmas, in the normally very bitter and controversial debate on this topic,” said CCME General Secretary Torsten Moritz.“This declaration signed by many Christian authorities in Europe points out the plight of those currently on the roads of exile and knocking at Europe’s doors,” said CEC President Rev. Christian Krieger. “We address this call to peoples and nations in Europe, to political leaders and the churches,” he added. The Christmas statement is available in English, French, German and Russian.

Christmas Tour dell’Euphoria Gospel Choir

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 29 novembre 2016

euphoria-gospelNapoli.
