Classic Week Overview

London – Classic Week at Christie’s London traces the story of human creativity from antiquity to the 20th century. An extraordinary array of artworks and objects offered across 18 auctions this December, these are pieces which show how the instinct to shape and reframe our world through art has always been central to society – from powerful marble portraits of Roman emperors to early devotional paintings, rare editions from the printing press to exquisite English silver. Highlights not to be missed this season include museum-quality floral still-lifes from the Dutch pioneers of the genre, drawings from Tiepolo’s famed Punchinello series, a copy of Shakespeare’s Second Folio and a number of fascinating private collections – from micromosaics to sporting art. Auctions run from 3 to 13 December, with additional online sales starting from 27 November. Explore the sales in person with viewings at our King Street galleries from 29 November.

Annual “Swing for Kids Golf Classic”

Orthopaedic Institute for Children has announced that its annual “Swing for Kids Golf Classic” will be held Sept. 9 at the beautiful Palos Verdes Golf Club. Proceeds will go to OIC’s 2020 campaign: A Vision for Our Future and help support the creation of The Ahmanson Foundation Fracture Center on OIC’s downtown Los Angeles campus. Serving as master of ceremonies for the tournament will be longtime OIC supporter and star of the Netflix hit series “Insatiable” Christopher Gorham. Other cast members—including Sarah Colonna, Arden Myrin, Michael Provost and Irene Choi—are also scheduled to attend, and Netflix itself will serve as one of the event’s sponsors. Operating in more than 190 countries, Netflix currently has more than 148 million paid subscribers worldwide, including 60 million in the United States; and its sponsorship of the Swing for Kids Golf Classic marks another significant milestone in the history of this tournament, which each year grows in popularity and esteem.Among the golfers participating in this year’s event will be actors Matt Barr and Sebastian Roché. Barr currently stars as Danny McNamara in the action–adventure television series “Blood and Treasure.” Roché is known for his roles as Kurt Mendel in “Odyssey 5,” Jerry Jacks in “General Hospital,” Thomas Jerome Newton in “Fringe,” Balthazar in “Supernatural,” Mikael in both “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” and Reichsminister Martin Heusmann in “The Man in the High Castle.” “By supporting events such as the Swing for Kids Golf Classic, you help make certain our ability to provide this amazing patient care and ensure that all children with orthopaedic conditions have a future where they can grow well and play well,” said OIC Golf Classic Chair and long-time advocate Dan Madden.The Ahmanson Foundation Fracture Center is a key element in transforming OIC’s Lowman Building into a state-of-the-art medical pavilion. Last month OIC opened Los Angeles’ newest and most modern pediatric orthopaedic urgent care center; and other components of the transformation include a new physical therapy center, research laboratories, pharmacy, Harbison Radiology and The Luck Family Lecture Hall. This makeover will help ensure that OIC’s expert surgeons, doctors and nurses have the best facilities and equipment to care for the increasing number of children who come through its doors.

Classic Week Evening Sales

London – The wealth of works offered across Christie’s three Classic Week Evening sales – Masterpieces from a Rothschild Collection, The Exceptional Sale and the Old Masters Evening Sale – have realised a combined total of £48,314,125 / $60,730,855 / €53,773,621. Welcoming registered bidders from 40 countries across 5 continents, the top lots of the evening were An Egyptian Brown Quartzite Head of The God Amen and David Teniers’ The Ham Dinner which set a new world record price for the artist at auction, each work sold for £4,746,250. Bringing the running total for Classic Week sales to date to £56,508,750 / $71,043,549 / €62,899,541, the auctions continue until 11 July, with estimates from £800 to £4 million, the sales present rare opportunities for new and established collectors across price levels.
