Have your say on the EU mission for healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters

Inspired by the Apollo 11 mission to put a man on the moon, the European research and innovation missions aim to deliver solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing our world. This includes protecting and restoring the health of our oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters.The Commission is designing and creating these missions together with input from European citizens. This will ensure that the missions meet their expectations and needs. As part of this process, we have launched an interactive pilot platform so that anyone can put forward their own ideas and vote for the ones they like best. The opportunity to submit proposals will be open until 6 September, and voting will remain open until 14 September. So check it out now!
The results of the call for ideas will be presented at the online ‘European Research & Innovation Days’ (22-24 September 2020). The selected missions will be announced at the end of 2020 and launched in 2021. A mission in the area of healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters will be a powerful tool to raise awareness of their importance among citizens and help develop solutions on a range of issues.These include
systemic solutions for the prevention, reduction, mitigation and removal of marine pollution including plastics
transition to a circular and blue economy
adaption to and mitigation of pollution and climate change in the ocean
sustainable use and management of ocean resources
development of new materials including biodegradable plastic substitutes, new feed and food
urban, coastal and maritime spatial planning ocean governance ocean economics applied to maritime activities.

North-East Atlantic coastal states reach agreement on blue whiting and Atlanto-Scandian herring

In London, delegations of the European Union, the Faroe Islands, Norway and Iceland, with the participation of Greenland as observer, reached an agreement on the management measures for 2019 for blue whiting and Atlanto-Scandian herring. North-East Atlantic coastal states agreed that, in 2019, the total catches of blue whiting should not exceed 1,143,629 tonnes and that the total catch level for Atlanto-Scandian herring should not be more than 588,562 tonnes. The catch limits are based on the long-term management strategy jointly agreed by the coastal states and are in line with the scientific advice received from the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The parties may fish their quotas in their respective zones of fisheries jurisdiction and in international waters.

Commission launches call worth €1.5m to promote coastal and maritime tourism

The European Commission is making available €1.5 million to create nautical routes linking up maritime sites across Europe. The announcement was made by Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for Environment, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, when opening the European Tourism Day conference in Brussels today.”With today’s call for proposals we are shining a light on Europe’s rich maritime heritage, from museums to monuments. By encouraging tourist authorities to team up with the cultural and creative industeuropean commissionries, this call will create new tourist offers, making Europe’s coastal regions an even more attractive holiday destination”, Commissioner Vella said.Commissioner Vella also used his opening speech to stress the role of innovation in keeping Europe’s maritime and coastal tourism competitive and attractive.”Tourism is changing. Holidaymakers are increasingly looking for more than traditional ‘sun, sand and sea’ package. So innovation is indispensable to keep you – and Europe – in business. And we also need innovation to keep our air, landscapes and waters clean. Because Europe’s natural treasures are some of our greatest tourism assets. So going green is not just good for the environment. It’s good for business,” he said.
Coastal tourism is the most popular type of tourism in Europe. Two out of three European tourists prefer to spend their holidays on the coast, and nearly half of all nights spent in EU tourist accommodation are spent in coastal areas. Together with cruise tourism, yachting and marinas, coastal tourism in the EU provides almost 3 million jobs and generates revenue of 400 billion euros.The Commission is supporting maritime and coastal tourism by funding new ideas, fostering dialogue, and promoting Europe as a maritime destination, in line with its 2014 ‘European Strategy for more Growth and Jobs in Coastal and Maritime Tourism’.Its ‘Guide on Funding for Coastal and Maritime Tourism’, developed in early 2016, gives a helpful overview of available EU funding.Today’s call for proposals follows a call for the creation of underwater cultural routes earlier this year.
