“With the appointment of Martin Schulz as president, the European Parliament is going in the right direction to give new impetus to the construction of a stronger EU, to defend the community method against all attempts to push a purely intergovernmental Europe, and to provide adequate and farsighted answers to the on-going crisis”.With these words the president of the Committee of the Regions, Mercedes Bresso, today welcomed the appointment of Martin Schulz as the new president of the European Parliament. “I really thank Mr Buzek for the excellent cooperation of the last few years – said Bresso – and look forward to further enforcing relations between the Committee of the Regions and the European Parliament, two institutions fully committed to bringing EU policies as close as possible to the needs of European citizens”. The contribution of the new EP president and his knowledge and consideration of the role played by regional and local authorities will be fundamental resources in the coming weeks and months when, according to Bresso, “an extraordinary joint effort will be needed to properly face crucial challenges such as the launch of a special EU plan for growth and jobs, the finalisation of the rules for the new ‘fiscal compact’ and the negotiations on the Multi-annual Financial Framework 2014-2020”.
The Committee of the Regions is the EU’s assembly of regional and local representatives. The mission of its 344 members from all 27 EU Member States is to involve regional and local authorities and the communities they represent in the EU’s decision-making process and to inform them about EU policies. The European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council are obliged to consult the Committee in policy areas affecting regions and cities. It can appeal to the EU Court of Justice if its rights are infringed or it believes that an EU law violates the subsidiarity principle or fails to respect regional or local powers.
